        Corona Chaos. Confessions from a pharmacist

        by Simon Krivec

        More than two years of pandemic is more than two years of corona clutter. Only a staggering level of helpfulness, improvisation and flexibility prevented the healthcare system from collapsing completely. In this highly topical book, pharmacist Simon Krivec tells of his incredible experiences and the stormy ups and downs of pandemic madness, missing masks and disinfectants, and the feeling of having been totally abandoned by a helpless state. We learn, for instance, of the short-term procurement of large quantities of ethanol and the transportation of the highly flammable substance, and just what lured the author – and 71,400 euros in cash – to visit the port of Neuss at night.

        Unstable universalities

        Poststructuralism and radical politics

        by Saul Newman, Simon Tormey, Jon Simons, Chantal Hamil

        Unstable universalities, available for the first time in paperback, examines the theme of universality and its place in radical political theory. Saul Newman argues that both Marxist politics of class struggle and the postmodern politics of difference have reached their historical and political limits, and that what is needed is a new approach to universality, a new way of thinking about collective politics. By exploring various themes and ideas within poststructuralist and post-Marxist theory, the book develops a new and original approach to universality - one that has important implications for politics today, particularly on questions of power, subjectivity, ethics and democracy. In so doing, it engages in debates with thinkers such as Laclau, Zizek, Badiou and Rancière over the future of radical politics. It also applies important theoretical insights to contemporary events such as the emergence of the anti-globalisation movement, the 'war on terrorism', the rise of anti-immigrant racism, and the nihilistic violence which lurks at the margins of the political. ;

        Adam Travels: Thirty Years Later

        by Simon Garber

        Adam Travels: Thirty Years Later  by Simon Garber Traveling is one of the great joys in life, as Russian American Adam Gardov knows well. For thirty years, this brilliant chef, his wife, and his daughter have explored the wonders of Europe and Israel, finding joy, new friends, and adventure wherever their wanderlust takes them. Adam Travels: Thirty Years Later is a collection of short stories penned by Shimon Garber—a fictional travelogue of the Gardov family’s journeys. Often lighthearted, sometimes sad, and always interesting, these narratives celebrate the similarities—and differences—among nations, cultures, and cuisines. From a strange encounter with Russian gangsters while whale watching off the Spanish coast to a peaceful float in the tranquil Dead Sea, these stories bring each location to life. This is not a travel guide, however—instead, author Shimon Garber uses the Gardov family and their adventures to celebrate travel and exploration. Sometimes travel lets you stand alone upon a mountaintop. Sometimes you find yourself trying to sleep in a room with a world-class snorer. But as these stories show, the benefits always outweigh the setbacks. So pack your bags, check your passport, settle into your comfiest chair, and set off with the Gardovs to explore our amazing world.

        Adam unterwegs:

        by Simon Garber

        Adam unterwegs: Dreißig Jahre später von Simon Garber Reisen ist eine der großen Freuden im Leben, wie der Russlandamerikaner Adam Gardov gut weiß. Seit dreißig Jahren erforschen dieser brillante Koch, seine Frau und seine Tochter die Wunder Europas und Israels und finden Freude, neue Freunde und Abenteuer, wohin auch immer ihr Fernweh sie führt. Adam unterwegs: 30 Jahre später ist eine Sammlung von Kurzgeschichten, die von Shimon Garber verfasst wurden – ein fiktiver Reisebericht über die Reisen der Familie Gardov. Oft unbeschwert, manchmal traurig und immer interessant, zelebrieren diese Erzählungen die Ähnlichkeiten – und Unterschiede – zwischen Nationen, Kulturen und Küchen. Von einer seltsamen Begegnung mit russischen Gangstern während der Walbeobachtung vor der spanischen Küste bis zu einem friedlichen Treiben im ruhigen Toten Meer erwecken diese Geschichten jeden Ort zum Leben. Dies ist jedoch kein Reiseführer. Stattdessen nutzt der Autor Shimon Garber die Familie Gardov und ihre Abenteuer, um Reisen und Entdeckungen zu feiern. Manchmal steht man allein auf einem Berggipfel. Manchmal versucht man, in einem Hotelzimmer neben einem Weltklasse-Schnarcher einzuschlafen. Aber wie diese Geschichten zeigen, überwiegen die Vorteile immer die Rückschläge. Packen Sie also Ihre Koffer, checken Sie Ihren Reisepass, setzen Sie sich in Ihren bequemsten Stuhl und machen Sie sich mit den Gardovs auf den Weg, um unsere wunderbare Welt zu erkunden.

        Gambling on Granola

        by Fiona Maria Simon

        In Gambling on Granola: Unexpected Gifts on the Path of Entrepreneurship, Simon shares a tale that is uplifting and inspiring but also raw and honest. This is a business memoir but also a love story―the love for her daughter, of a journey in uncharted waters, of the products and company she created, and of the continued challenge to follow her dream.We see her growth and healing over fifteen years, as mistakes, weaknesses, and naiveté, evolve into resilience, resolve, and inspiration. For Fiona, it started out as all new businesses do―with an idea. But her world quickly became more complex as she established her company, developed new product lines, forged personal relationships in a competitive environment, grew her business, and held onto her deepest values―all while raising her daughter, Natalie, as a single mom.

        Time and world politics

        Thinking the present

        by Kimberly Hutchings, Simon Tormey, Jon Simons

        This book offers the first authoritative guide to assumptions about time in theories of contemporary world politics. It demonstrates how predominant theories of the international or global 'present' are affected by temporal assumptions, grounded in western political thought, that fundamentally shape what we can and cannot know about world politics today. The first part of the book traces the philosophical roots of assumptions about time in contemporary political theory. The second part examines contemporary theories of world politics, including liberal and realist International Relations theories and the work of Habermas, Hardt and Negri, Virilio and Agamben. In each case, it is argued, assumptions about political time ensure the identification of the particular temporality of western experience with the political temporality of the world as such and put the theorist in the unsustainable position of holding the key to the direction of world history. In the final chapter, the book draws on postcolonial and feminist thinking, and the philosophical accounts of political time in the work of Derrida and Deleuze, to develop a new 'untimely' way of thinking about time in world politics. ;
