Lévi-Strauss' Entscheidung, den Band nicht Strukturale Anthropologie III, sondern Der Blick aus der Ferne zu nennen, betont diejenigen Partien des Buches, in denen der Blick des Ethnologen sich wendet, um die in der Ferne gewonnenen Parameter auf unsere eigene Gegenwart zu beziehen – die höchst folgenreiche Wendung hin zu einer Ethnologie der eigenen Kultur. Roberto Calassos Essay ist in drei Kapitel gegliedert. Das dritte, zwei Seiten lang, beschreibt einen Traum Baudelaires als Präfiguration der zusammenstürzenden Zwillingstürme (9/11). Das zweite, »Die Wiener Gasgesellschaft«, durchläuft die Jahre 1933 bis 1945. Es präsentiert Zitate deutscher und ausländischer Autoren, die damals ihre Eindrücke von Nazi-Deutschland festgehalten haben (Louis-Ferdinand Céline, André Gide, Simone Weil, Klaus Mann, Walter Benjamin, Carl Schmitt, Ernst Jünger, Arthur Koestler, Curzio Malaparte, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett u. a.). Erläuternd führt der Autor durch ein Panoptikum, in dem Naivität immer mehr dem Entsetzen weicht. Es sind Blicke auf Deutschland außerhalb der Leitlinien deutscher Erinnerungskultur, Blicke der unmittelbaren Erfahrung. »Touristen und Terroristen«, das theoretisch grundlegende erste Kapitel, nimmt gesellschaftskritische Motive aus Calassos letztem Buch Die Glut auf und spitzt sie zu. Gesellschaft überhaupt ist ein Gegner von metaphysischem Rang, nur metaphysische Waffen sind gegen ihn tauglich. Deren Arsenale jedoch hat die säkularisierte Gesellschaft geplündert. Sorge, in der Immanenz zu ersticken, prägt Das unnennbare Heute. Alles, was über die Gesellschaft hinaus auf ein Anderes, Jenseitiges wies, hat sie sich in pervertierter Form dienstbar gemacht: Ritus, Theologie, Metaphysik, selbst das Denken und die Sprache. Als ein Symptom dieser Situation, des »unnennbaren Heute« also, interpretiert Calasso den Terrorismus - den heutigen, insbesondere islamistischen, und den von früher. »Nichts ist wahr, alles ist erlaubt.«

In zehn aphoristisch-erzählerischen Texten lotet Giogio Agamben erneut den Raum des Menschlichen aus: in seiner Beziehung zu Erinnerung und Spiel, zur Religion, zur Sehnsucht nach dem nicht Erinnerbaren, nach dem, was wir als unser »Genie«, unsere Autorschaft, unser Ich empfinden und was in keiner anderen Form als eben der des Unerhörten, immer Flüchtigen und nur – vielleicht – am »Tag des Gerichts« als Bild, als Einbildung zu fassen ist. Das heilige Ich und seine Helfershelferin, die Psychologie, werden insgeheim entthront, und dem Denken (und Leben) öffnen sich neue Wege, auf denen der individuelle Eigensinn bewahrt bleibt, aber innigst verbunden mit einem Unerklärlichen oder Zauberischen oder Unpersönlichen, Vorindividuellen. Das »spezielle« Sein, das Sein als Erscheinung und das in der Erscheinung erkennbare Sein, ist schließlich auch das Sein der Spezies, das Angesicht der Menschheit. Die inhaltliche Klammer des Buches liegt im Gedanken der Entweihung metaphysischer Konzepte, die durch eben diese Profanierung für einen neuen Gebrauch wiedergewonnen werden können. Die Profanierung löscht – anders als die Säkularisierung, die nur eine Verschiebung der Macht von der göttlichen auf die menschliche Sphäre vornimmt – das Heilige nicht aus, sondern läßt es wie in einem Suchbild entstellt, verrätselt, aber auch mit neuer Leichtigkeit fortleben – so wie der Ritus fortlebt im Spiel.

»Wir haben zum nachmetaphysischen Denken keine Alternative.« Dieser Satz, geschrieben von Jürgen Habermas in seiner 1988 erschienenen Aufsatzsammlung Nachmetaphysisches Denken, gilt noch heute. »Nachmetaphysisches Denken« – das ist zunächst die historische Antwort auf die Krise der Metaphysik nach Hegel, deren zentrale Denkfiguren vor allem durch gesellschaftliche, aber auch innerwissenschaftliche Entwicklungen ins Wanken geraten sind. In der Folge wurden das Erkenntnisprivileg der Philosophie erschüttert, ihre Grundbegriffe detranszendentalisiert und der Vorrang der Theorie vor der Praxis in Frage gestellt. Aus guten Gründen hat die philosophische Theorie, so die Diagnose damals, »ihren außeralltäglichen Status eingebüßt«, sich damit aber auch neue Probleme eingehandelt. In »Nachmetaphysisches Denken II« widmet sich Habermas einigen dieser Probleme in zum Teil bisher unveröffentlichten Texten. Im ersten Teil des Buches geht es um den Perspektivenwechsel von metaphysischen Weltbildern zur Lebenswelt. Letztere analysiert Habermas als »Raum der Gründe« – auch dort, wo die Sprache (noch) nicht regiert, etwa in der gestischen Kommunikation und im Ritus. Im zweiten Teil steht das spannungsreiche Verhältnis von Religion und nachmetaphysischem Denken im Vordergrund. Habermas schließt hier unmittelbar an seine weitsichtige Bemerkung von 1988 an, wonach die »Philosophie auch in ihrer nachmetaphysischen Gestalt Religion weder ersetzen noch verdrängen« kann, und erkundet etwa das neue Interesse der Philosophie an der Religion. Den Abschluss bilden Texte über die Rolle der Religion im politischen Kontext einer postsäkularen, liberalen Gesellschaft.
