        The picture politics of Sir Francis Carruthers Gould

        Britain's pioneering political cartoonist

        by Mark Bryant

        This is the first major study of Britain's pioneering graphic satirist, Sir Francis Carruthers Gould (1844-1925), the first staff political cartoonist on a daily newspaper in Britain, and the first of his kind to be knighted. Written by the distinguished media historian, Colin Seymour-Ure, it is essential reading for anyone interested in cartoons, caricature and illustration and will also be welcomed by students of history, politics and the media. It examines Gould's career in Fleet Street until his retirement after the First World War. It also discusses his illustrations for magazines and books and there is an analysis of his use of symbolism and literary allusion to lampoon such eminent politicians as Gladstone and Joseph Chamberlain. As Lord Baker says in his Foreword, this book is 'a major contribution to our knowledge of British cartooning.'

        British horror radio from the advent of broadcasting to the digital age

        by Richard Hand

        This groundbreaking book is the first full-length study of British horror radio from the pioneering days of recording and broadcasting right through to the digital audio cultures of our own time. The book offers an historical, critical and theoretical exploration of horror radio and audio performance examining key areas such as writing, narrative, performance practice and reception throughout the history of that most unjustly neglected of popular art forms: radio drama and 'spoken word' auditory cultures. The volume draws on extensive archival research as well as insightful interviews with significant writers, producers and actors. The book offers detailed analysis of major radio series such as Appointment with Fear, The Man in Black, The Price of Fear and Fear on Four as well as one-off horror plays, comedy-horror and experimental uses of binaural and digital technology in producing uncanny audio. ;

        The reign of Richard II

        From minority to tyranny 1377–97

        by Alison McHardy

        The long-awaited prequel to Chronicles of the revolution covers the first twenty years (1377-97) of Richard II's reign. This richly-documented period offers exceptional opportunities and challenges to students, and the editor has selected material from a wide range of sources: well-known English chronicles, foreign chronicles and legal, administrative and financial records. These are arranged chronologically to form a coherent narrative of the reign. Clear and lively commentary and notes enable readers to make the fullest use of each document. The introduction describes the complex domestic and international situation which confronted the young king and offers guidance on the strengths and weaknesses of the reign's leading chronicles. The dramatic and diverse politics of the reign of Richard II make this the ideal special subject and an accessible, affordable, student-friendly documentary history of Richard II's reign has long been needed. This book is designed to fill that gap.

        La communauté juive de Cuba

        by Dr. Jay Levinson

        La communauté juive de Cuba : Les Années d'Or, 1906-1958 par le Dr. Jay Levinson En 1906, Manuel Hadida convoqua une réunion de onze juifs dans son bureau. Un membre de sa famille venait de mourir, et le but de la réunion était de fonder une synagogue et un cimetière juif pour les quelques cent « colons hébreux » de Cuba. Lors d'une autre réunion qui suivit peu de temps après, des responsables furent élus, mais pendant l'automne de le même année 1906, le trésorier nouvellement élu mourut à son tour. Ce furent les débuts de la communauté juive de Cuba, qui devait éventuellement atteindre le nombre de plus de 15 000 membres à son zénith pendant les années 1940 et 1950. Cette étude, première du genre et complète, retrace l'histoire de cette communauté, reconstituant de nombreux événements longtemps oubliés. Le premier rabbin sur l'île serait venu de Floride, où il aurait été le propriétaire d'une fabrique de crème glacée, et se serait rendu à Santiago de Cuba et à La Havane. Au cours de la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, un abattoir de viande cachère aurait fonctionné à Cuba pour les soldats de la U.S. Army. Meyer Lansky, connu pour ses activités clandestines, a présenté une application pour devenir membre d'une synagogue de La Havane. Le livre permet aussi de mieux comprendre certains points d'histoire mieux connus. Le refus du gouvernement de Cuba d'autoriser le paquebot St. Louis à laisser débarquer ses passagers est examiné avec une vision de la fuite des juifs de l'Europe nazie, particulièrement en direction du Mandat de Palestine, où la politique d'immigration des britannique était en train de changer (ce qu'ignoraient les cubains). La construction de nouvelles synagogues à la veille de la Révolution est considérée dans le contexte des nouveaux riches et de la migration vers les banlieues. Jay Levinson, un fonctionnaire civil en retraite et écrivain indépendant, a publié un grand nombre de livres et d'articles à propos de ses nombreux voyages dans plus de 50 pays. Il écrit beaucoup à propos des sites juifs et de histoire de ce peuple. Levinson a un doctorat de l'Université de New York et il est actuellement professeur invite au John Jay College. Pour écrire ses livres, le Dr. Levinson interroge un grand nombre de gens, consulte des documents dans les archives, examine les journaux de l'époque correspondante, visite les sites, et il a parcouru les cimetières de Cuba à la recherche d'informations – même sur les pierres tombales. Une édition en anglais pour l'Amérique du Nord a été publiée en 2007.

        Wie das Zebra zu seinen Streifen kommt

        Essays zur Naturgeschichte

        by Stephen Jay Gould, Stephen Cappellari

        Stephen Jay Goulds Essays zum Thema Evolution befassen sich sowohl mit dem rein politischen und nichtintellektuellen Streit, der durch die Anhänger der Kreationslehre angefacht worden ist, als auch mit der faszinierenden Debatte, die zur Zeit innerhalb der Evolutionstheorie stattfindet. »Das Einfließen von Fragen der Evolution in scheinbar nicht verwandte politische Diskussionen zeigt sowohl das weitläufige Ausmaß dieser Lebenseinstellung als auch den unlösbaren Zusammenhang wissenschaftlicher und sozialer Fragen. Die weiterführende und klarere Sicht, die aus der Evolutionstheorie hervorgeht, könnte unsere Auffassung von der Wissenschaft und von Erklärungsprozessen im allgemeinen vertiefen, indem sie die scheinbare Zufälligkeit der Geschichte und plötzliche Veränderungen (die erst im nachhinein sinnvoll werden) heraushebt gegenüber dem Bild einer vorhersehbaren und regelmäßigen Welt, wie es vom Stereotyp einer sogenannt ›harten‹ Wissenschaft gepredigt wird. Mit diesem Thema beschäftige ich mich in der ganzen Sammlung.« »Nur wenige Autoren sind wie Gould fähig, wissenschaftliche Arbeit mit solcher Klarheit von Denken und Schreiben zu verbinden. [...] Die meisten Essays beginnen mit einer nichtwissenschaftlichen Anekdote, und nach wenigen Seiten sind wir mühelos mitten in der Analyse komplexer biologischer Fragen.« (The New York Times Book Review) Stephen Jay Gould, geb. 1941 in New York, ist Professor an der Harvard Universität und lehrt Geologie, Biologie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte. In der Reihe suhrkamp taschenbuch wissenschaft liegen von seinen Büchern bereits vor: Der falsch vermessene Mensch (stw 583) sowie Der Daumen des Panda (stw 789).

        Der Daumen des Panda

        Betrachtungen zur Naturgeschichte

        by Stephen Jay Gould, Klaus Laermann, Eva-Maria Schmitz

        Waren die Dinosaurier wirklich dümmer als Eidechsen? Warum werden eigentlich immer ungefähr gleich viele Männer wie Frauen geboren? Wie kam der berühmte Dr. Down zu seiner »Mongolismus«-Theorie und ihren rassistischen Implikationen? Inwiefern spiegelt die Entwicklung der Mickey Mouse unsere eigene Entwicklung wider? Was erzählen uns der magische »Daumen« des Pandas und die endlose Wanderung der Seeschildkröte über die Unvollkommenheiten, die die Evolution beweisen? Bei aller Vielfalt ihrer Themen stehen die brillanten Essays Stephen Jay Goulds doch in einem präzisen Zusammenhang: in ihrem Bezug zur Evolutionstheorie, die Gould in ihrer avanciertesten Version vertritt.

        US diplomacy and the Good Friday Agreement in post-conflict Northern Ireland

        by Richard Hargy

        Richard Haass and Mitchell Reiss, as autonomous diplomats in the George W. Bush State Department, were able to alter US intervention in Northern Ireland and play critical roles in the post-1998 peace process. Their contributions have not been fully appreciated or understood. The restoration of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government in 2007 was made possible by State Department-led intervention in the peace process. There are few references to Northern Ireland in work examining the foreign policy legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. Moreover, the ability to control US foreign policy towards the region brought one of George W. Bush's Northern Ireland special envoys into direct diplomatic conflict with the most senior actors inside the British government. This book will uncover the extent of this fall-out and provide original accounts on how diplomatic relations between these old allies became so fraught.

        Der Fall Wagner

        Schriften-Aufzeichnungen-Briefe. Herausgegeben und mit einer Chronik sowie einem Nachwort versehen von Dieter Borchmeyer

        by Friedrich Nietzsche, Dieter Borchmeyer, Dieter Borchmeyer

        Friedrich Nietzsche wurde am 15. Oktober 1844 in Röcken bei Lützen als Sohn eines Pastors geboren. Er studierte in Bonn und Leipzig zunächst Sprachwissenschaften und evangelische Theologie, seinen Abschluß machte er jedoch nur in klassischer Philologie. 1868 lernte er Richard Wagner kennen, der sein Denken neben Schopenhauer stark beeinflußte. Einige Jahre später zerbrach die Freundschaft über Nietzsches Geringschätzung der Bayreuther Festspiele. 1869 wurde er auf eine Professur für Altphilologie nach Basel berufen, die er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zehn Jahre später wieder aufgab. Fortan lebte er von seiner Pension und finanzierte davon viele Reisen, u.a. in die Schweiz und nach Italien, auf denen seine wichtigsten philosophischen Werke entstanden. In seinen Hauptwerken sagte Nietzsche den Tod Gottes voraus, beschrieb den Übermenschen, trat für die Umwertung aller Werte ein und prägte somit den Nihilismus. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen Also sprach Zarathustra (1883) und Ecce Homo (1908). In den 1880er Jahren nahmen seine körperlichen und seelischen Leiden zu und gipfelten 1889 in einem Zusammenbruch, von dem er sich nicht mehr erholte. Bis zu seinem Tod am 25. August 1900 in Weimar wurde er von seiner Mutter und seiner Schwester gepflegt. Dieter Borchmeyer, geboren 1941, ist Professor emeritus an der Universität Heidelberg, war Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste und lehrt im Rahmen der Stiftungsdozentur »Heidelberger Vorträge zur Kulturtheorie« weiterhin an der Universität Heidelberg. Borchmeyers Arbeitsfeld ist vor allem die deutsche Literatur vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert und das Musiktheater mit Monographien zu Goethe, Schiller, Mozart, Wagner und Nietzsche. Zuletzt erschien von ihm Was ist deutsch? (2017). Pondering the Pantry

        The Smart Shopper’s Guide

        by JAY lEVINSON

        When shopping for food, know what you are buying. Don’t be fooled by advertising and buy something you don’t really need or don’t even want! This book helps readers be smart shoppers instead of victims of marketing gimmicks. Obviously, there are too many items on store shelves for this book to be "complete." Rather, the idea is to provide representative product examples to increase awareness and give consumers a better idea of what they are buying and a product’s benefits. There is no such thing as a "best buy." Some shoppers look for quality. Others are motivated by nutrition. Price can be a very strong consideration, but not for everyone. The basic philosophy of this book is not to push readers into any specific direction. Rather, the intent is to make readers aware of what they are buying so they can make intelligent decisions and choose a healthier diet. There are two rules that apply to all consumers: (1) understand the label, both what is written and what is not, and (2) realize that the serving size on the label is probably not the portion size consumers really eat, so adjust the cost and nutrition information accordingly. Jay Levinson has a PhD from New York University. His career has been extremely diverse, working for the US Central Intelligence Agency and then in the forensic division of the Israel Police. For some ten years he ran a food co-op, gaining understanding about food distribution and sales. He has published six books and several hundred articles and has lectured in more than two dozen countries in four languages. The author has visited several dozen food and beverage production companies, both big and small, and interviewed their key personnel.

        The Cooke sisters

        Education, piety and politics in early modern England

        by Gemma Allen

        This book is a study of five remarkable sixteenth-century women. Part of the select group of Tudor women allowed access to a formal education, the Cooke sisters were also well-connected through their marriages to influential Elizabethan politicians. Drawing particularly on the sisters' own writings, this book demonstrates that the sisters' education extended far beyond that normally allowed for sixteenth-century women, challenging the view that women in this period were excluded from using their formal education to practical effect. It reveals that the sisters' learning provided them with opportunities to communicate effectively their own priorities through their translations, verse and letters. By reconstructing the sisters' networks, it demonstrates how they worked alongside - and sometimes against - family members over matters of politics and religion, empowered by their exceptional education. Providing new perspectives on these key issues, it will be essential reading for early modern historians and literary scholars.

        Richard Wainwright, the Liberals and Liberal Democrats

        Unfinished business

        by Frances Babbage, Matt Cole

        Richard Wainwright, the Liberals and Liberal Democrats: Unfinished Business now available in paperback, offers new research on familiar themes involving loyalties of politics, faith and locality. Richard Wainwright was a Liberal MP for seventeen years during the Party's recovery, but his life tells us about much more than this. Wainwright grew up in prosperity, but learned from voluntary work about poverty; he refused to fight in World War Two, but saw war at its cruellest; he joined the Liberal Party when most had given up on it, but gave his fortune to it; lost a by-election but caused the only Labour loss in Harold Wilson's landslide of 1966. He then played a key role in the fall of Jeremy Thorpe, the Lib-Lab Pact and the formation of the SDP-Liberal Alliance and the Liberal Democrats; he represented a unique Yorkshire constituency which reflected his pride and hope for society; and though he gave his life to the battle to be in the Commons, he refused a seat in the Lords. Richard Wainwright's story is central to the story of the Liberal Party and sheds light on the reasons for its survival and the state of its prospects. At the same time this book is a parable of politics for anyone who wants to represent an apparently lost cause, who wants to motivate people who have been neglected, and who wants to follow their convictions at the highest level. ;
