      • FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange

FILI, founded in 1977, is a centre for the export of literature. FILI promotes the export of literature from Finland by facilitating professional contacts and serving as a “home base” for translators of Finnish literature. We deal with fiction, children’s and young adult books, non-fiction, poetry, comics and graphic novels written in Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Sámi. FILI serves as a support organisation for the export of literature, while publishers and literary agencies handle the sale of translation rights. FILI is a department of the Finnish Literature Society, and around 80% of our funding comes from public sources.   FILI distributes approx. €700,000 in translation grants, travel grants and promotional grants for over 400 different projects annually organises Editors’ Week events for publishers to visit Finland from abroad participates in publishing trade fairs abroad acts as a focal point for translators of Finnish literature maintains a database of translations of Finnish literature published in other languages and collects data on translation rights sold abroad. You are welcome to contact us: if you want more information about our grants programmes (Grants Wizard) to let us know about a publisher abroad that’s interested in Finnish literature if you are a translator from Finnish/Finland-Swedish/Sámi and you’re not in our records yet to tell us about a new translation of a Finnish book that’s not in our database if you have questions about literary exports.   Networks FILI constitutes part of the NordLit network, along with similar organisations from the other Nordic countries. We hold regular meetings together where we plan our future operations and joint projects. We have a shared Nordic presence at some publishing trade events, such as the London Book Fair. In 2015 NordLit had a joint Nordic stand at the Beijing International Book Fair and the Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair. In Finland, FILI is a member of the TAIVE network of arts information centres. Unlike Finnish information centres for many other artistic genres, FILI does not have a mandate or specific duties to perform here in Finland; instead, our focus is on activities outside Finland. Thus we refer to ourselves in Finnish as a literary export organisation.

        Gemälde und Drama

        Giotto Masaccio Leonardo

        by Ivan Nagel

        Florenz

        Ein Reisebegleiter

        by Birgit Haustedt

by Gilles Allaire, Erik Thévenod-Mottet, Filippo Arfini, Sophie Reviron, Angela Tregear, Giovanni Belletti, Dominique Barjolle, Denis Sautier, Andrea Marescotti, Ana I Sanjuán, Julien Frayssignes, Claudio Montanari. Edited by Elizabeth Barham, Bertil Sylvander.

Agri-food traditional, regional and typical products are an important resource for agricultural and rural development in many areas of the European Union. These Origin Labelled Products (OLPs) activate a complex system of relationships involving the local production and marketing and distribution systems, rural development dynamics and the consumer. Based on research conducted in European countries, this book provides an account of the current state of OLPs, enabling a better understanding of their characteristics and evolution in the agri-food system. It also assesses public policies at various levels and the effects of legal protection, financial support and public promotional initiatives on those involved, and consumers’ and citizens’ concerns and expectations.

        The year of the foreigner

        by Sebastiano Modadori

Milan, 1989. Filippo Degani, a senior year high school student, is an ordinary boy: middle-class family, the boring school routine, the girls, the iron friendship with the inseparable Claudio, the best friend with whom he shares the dates with the girls and the passion for football. In the background, high school soccer tournaments and the exploits of the legendary Milan soccer team of Arrigo Sacchi, Gullit and Van Basten. The equilibrium of this very Italian glimpse on the end of the Eighties is overwhelmed by the arrival, in Filippo’s school, of Robert Horowitz, immediately renamed ‘the Stranger’ – rich, beautiful but above all mysterious: nothing is known of his past nor of the reasons that prompted the family to move from London to the outskirts of Milan. Between memorable soccer matches and night raids, the friendship with the Stranger will turn Filippo’s life like a glove, a revolution that will force him to measure the difficulty of remaining true to himself.

        Il vino dei due mondi

        by Antonio Calò, Angelo Costacurta

Aveva ragione.

The Journey of the Three Wise Men

        by John of Hildesheim

Written in the second half of the 14th century, this book by John of Hildesheim is an outstanding document of Medieval literature and historiography. The text is accompanied by some of the most wonderful illustrations taken from the great artistic tradition dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and it shows the inspiration that John of Hildesheim has given to the whole Christian iconography of Christmas and to some of the most outstanding works of art. “The remarkable iconography accompanying this volume, with forty-three different representations of the story of the three wise men (from Gentile da Fabriano to Lippi, from Giotto to Botticelli, from Benozzo Gozzoli to Piero della Francesca), is an evidence of the appeal of a story in which history, devotion, theology are closely intertwined, starting from the very journey of those three figures as the symbolic guiding thread of the Gospel narration.” (Card. Gianfranco Ravasi)

        Norman Islands

        by Veronica Galletta

Ortygia is the centre of Syracuse, one of the most beautiful and ancient Sicilian cities. But Ortygia is also a small island itself, and it’s here that Elena lives together with her father, a man who keeps pretending that all is fine, and her mother Clara, a woman who hasn’t left their island inside an island for years. She spends most of the time in her bedroom, surrounded by books that she stacks and moves according to some mysterious order, a system that Elena has been studying to try and understand what is going on inside her mother’s head. But even though she managed to sketch 103 maps of these books’ motion, the solution to the riddle – and to her mother’s depression – seems impossible to find. One day, Clara suddenly disappears and Elena embarks on a ritual journey across their strange hometown, following her mother’s maps and leaving her books in different places, in the hope to finally piece together not only Clara’s thoughts but also an incident from her own past, when Elena spilled a pot of boiling water all over her body, leaving scars that look little maps themselves. And it’s perhaps in this crossroad of maps, burns and secrets that lie the truth concealed by Elena’s parents and the rest of the island around her. With a spectacular eye for details and an outstandingly powerful voice, Veronica Galletta draws directly from her own experiences to describe the marks left by someone else and one’s own secrets, switching from the extremes to the in-betweens of everyday life inside an outlandish and deeply realistic city.

        90 partidos. 90 autores. 90 relatos

by David García Cames, Miguel Ángel Ortiz and Marcel Beltran

Football breaks down all doors, including those of literature. Contrary to popular belief, there are many writers who at some point were attracted by the mystery of the goal or the fervor of the stands. The ball sneaks into the work and life of authors who have built bridges between these two apparently dissociated worlds. From Marguerite Duras to Eduardo Galeano, passing through Albert Camus, Roberto Bolaño, Svetlana Aleksiévich or Federico García Lorca. This book is 90 games that were played one day. This book is made up of 90 stories, halfway between the chronicle and the tale, with which tribute is paid to 90 extraordinary creators who have influenced our way of understanding football.
