Veronica Britton: Chronic Detective: Episode One: A Wounded City

        by Niall Boyce

The first instalment — A Victorian private detective, Veronica Britton specialises in tricky situations that occur in time as well as space. Working alongside her young apprentice, the brilliant time-sensitive Gabrielle Pendleton, she’s very much in demand. If a necklace goes missing and you suspect that someone is selling it off in the future as a valuable antique, or you find yourself being blackmailed by someone who knows a little too much about your past, she’s your woman. Smart, efficient and (almost) always discreet, Veronica is the best chronic detective in London.Time travel is an open secret in the city; it operates under the supervision of the Ministry, an obscure branch of the British government that has taken a sudden interest in Veronica. She’s never liked them very much and done her best to avoid them. But somehow they have recently developed a habit of cropping up wherever and whenever she finds herself.Navigating the timepools – corridors that join the various time zones of London – Veronica uncovers a series of mysteries that are all strangely interconnected. She soon finds out she has stumbled on a fiendish plot hatched by a powerful enemy – one that threatens not just the city she loves, but the whole world. Only by facing up to the secrets of her past can Veronica Britton save the future.

Every child around the world dreams of venturing into space, of exploring distant planets, of finding alien civilisations nestled in never seen before valleys. And, even when we grow up, we still look at the stars as one of the few remaining genuine wonders of the contemporary world. Antonio Ereditato takes us where no man has ever been before: our journey begins on Earth, where we have to build our star-roaming vessel; then we set off, and Antonio guides us through planets and stars, asteroids and comets, to explain how the universe works. It’s a long trip, passing far beyond the Oort Cloud where comets are born, to the heart of our galaxy. Travel Guide for Space Explorers is a treasure trove of marvels and astonishing vistas; a field manual for the space explorer inside us.

It is her seventeenth birthday and no one remembers it except for Thomas, the gardener’s boy. Later she is driven to Winchester and has an unpleasant encounter with two raucous gentlemen in the local tavern before going on to fit her first ball gown that her aunt has given her the money for just before she died. But who is the lovely masked woman she glimpses in the mirror at the dress-makers, a glorious vision clad in rose-pink silk? And who is the dark figure approaching through the shadows of a dim and ghostly ballroom? Before she will discover the answers to these questions and to escape marriage to a most unpleasant companion of her uncle’s, Rosella must travel many miles to the glorious City of Venice accompanied by Pickle an extremely talkative and colourful parrot. She has left behind everything dear to her and when a mysterious stranger appears in Venice, Rosella believes that he may be the love she has so often dreamed about. This love will bring her pain and passion beyond anything she could ever have imagined. But her hopes are in ruins when she discovers the mysterious stranger to be the son of her arch enemy and once again she must flee. A Miracle Of Love

        by Barbara Cartland

Prince Nicolo of Vienz is irritated by his family and his Prime Minister continually begging him to be married for the sake of his country and to prevent it being taken over by a neighbour. He finally agrees to meet Princess Marziale, the daughter of the ruler of Bassanz. However when she arrives, the Prince learns by accident that she is very much in love with the Comte who had been sent to escort her to Vienz. Because the Prince has no wish to marry anyone, least of all someone who is in love with another man, he runs away to Venice without anyone, except his valet, Texxo, knowing that he is leaving the Palace. He orders Texxo to look after the horses at a hotel, while he hires a gondola to explore Venice. On his way down one of the canals the Prince is suddenly aware that a young girl is leaning out of the window of a grand house. Then he sees to his surprise that she is deliberately letting herself down by a rope into the canal. Thinking quickly he moves his gondola so that she falls into it and she begs him to take her away before anyone sees what has happened. How the Prince then finds that the girl he has rescued is incredibly beautiful and extremely intelligent. And how they set off on a thrilling adventure, knowing only each others’ Christian names and how they eventually fall in love is all told in this unusal romantic story by BARBARA CARTLAND.

What Do We Mean By 'God'?

        by Keith Ward

Language about God is something like the language of poetry - The poetic use of language is not to increase your information about the world. We know facts about the world without having poetry. The use of words in poetry is to evoke in us a certain attitude or way of looking at things or feeling about things . . . If this is the use of religious language, what sort of view of the world is it trying to convey? I think we might say it is trying to convey that the world is an expression of a reality beyond it . . . Keith Ward unpacks the meaning of the word 'God' and explains why we need to get rid of the crude and unhelpful assumptions that still abound. A book for all who are curious about how God, and God's actions, can be understood today. Intended for people looking for answers to life's biggest questions, this little book of guidance will appeal to anyone, whether believer or non-believer, looking for a quick and easy way into the topic.
