When the corpse of the opium queen of the East End, Madame Yin, is found in the river Thames, Celeste is drawn deep into the hidden parts of society. She gets support from Inspector Edwards, who at the beginning does everything but helping her.

Because colonial life also offers new, exciting experiences: Excesses celebrations, a strange Turk, fulminant mole hunts and a Japanese Zen garden in the middle of the colony of foliage. But is that enough? Can it replace a life without his Sabine?
