        Underutilized and Underexploited Horticultural Crops: Vol 01

        Underutilized and underexploited horticultural crops form an integral part of health food green parks, neutraceutical industry, home decorations, renewable sources of green energy and above all food reserves during calamities. Leaf vegetables like agathi, chekkurmanis, waterleaf, drumstick leaf, basella and colacasia leaf are rich in fibre, minerals and beta carotenes. Cucurbits like ash gourd, pointed gourd, ivy gourd, kekrol, snap melons and chow-chow are rich in iron and amino acids. Fruits like karonda, aonla and cherries are highly nutritious and are suited to less moisture soils. Noni is a fruit for health. Noni juice is recommended against diabetes, obesity and sleeplessness. Among spices, long pepper, mint, celery, fenugreek and garcenia possess medicinal properties. There are a large number of underexploited medicinal plants like tulsi and peppermint with considerable economic value. Underutilized crops like in Tripura, Orissa and Kerala are specially mentioned. There is need to broaden the food basket with lesser know crops. There is a shift from Health Care to Wellness Industry. Prevention is always better then cure. The present volume deals with underexploited and underutilized horticultural crops in its totality. The contributors of each are working scientists in the specific crop.

        The book has been compiled in ten chapters. Chapter-III to Chapter-VII is sub headed into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Observations and Results and Discussion. Subject index is designed to locate the important terms and name of fish. A separate author index has also been added. The cited references are enlisted under bibliography. The summary of the contents of the book may be pointed as: Chapter-I is planned to discuss introductory aspects of fish transportation. Chapter-II explains brief historical review of the process of fish transportation. Chapter-III begins with the process of determination of aquatic and bimodal oxygen uptake of fishes. The detailed account of oxygen uptake seems to be plinth for fish transportation. Chapter-IV gives an account of oxygen uptake of fishes under association in still water and continuously flowing water conditions. The information is necessary for the calculation of either increase or decrease of oxygen requirement during packing of fishes in a grouped condition. The study helps in determination of optimum number of fishes considered for packing. Chapter-V explains determination of optimum dose of anaesthetics namely Benzocaine and MS-222 of fishes and its effect on the oxygen uptake. The information is helpful for the calculation of decrease of oxygen requirement during packing of fishes. Chapter-VI deals with effect of ammonia on ultra structure of gill under scanning electron microscope and oxygen uptake of fishes. The study is helpful in deciding calculation of complete requirement of oxygen for packing. Chapter-VII critically explains evaluation of suitable packing conditions based on the information from Chapters III to VI under normal situation and present situation of COVID-19. Chapter-VIII reviews a general discussion of entire account of various processes of fish transportation. Chapter-IX describes summary and conclusions observed from the work of fish transportation.         Climate is a vital factor that influences land use, crop quality, its productivity as well as all the other of agricultural systems. The significant impact of climate change is visible on human societies and natural ecosystems around the world. This impact will be more severe on agriculture if global warming continues. As per estimates of IPCC (2014), the agriculture, forestry and other land use contributes 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions need to be reduced to avoid the serious impact of climate change using mitigation measures and adaptation strategies. Currently, unreliable and seasonal variations in weather have emerged as a serious challenge for sustainability influencing vegetation, biodiversity, livestock, soil, water, and other natural resources. In the last decade, more occurrence of extreme weather events affected farming community directly in their agricultural growth. The matter is of great concern to country like India, which require more produce from rainfed fields and shrinking crop land. To understand the problems occurring due to climate change, concerted efforts are required for mitigation and adaptation to reduce the vulnerability of rainfed agriculture and making it resilient. Agricultural output as well as the livelihood of people who depend on it, are particularly vulnerable to climate change, and it is important that we assess adaptation mechanisms to reduce these vulnerabilities. These practices should play a vital role to reduce GHG emissions by improving efficiency of farm inputs and others like agroforestry interventions for green agricultural technologies. Similarly, adoption of conservation agriculture, suitable cultivars, changing sowing dates, irrigation scheduling, and recycling waste water and solid waste in agriculture are some of the options for developing climate resilient agriculture.
