A Reflection on their Role in Development

David Harrison has contributed to the academic study of tourism over the last thirty years. This book brings together a collection of his published material that reflects the role played by tourism in 'development,' both in societies emerging from Western colonialism and in societies previously part of the Soviet system. The overarching theme looks at how promoted as a tool for development, tourism can lead to conflict between competing elites, but can also empower groups previously subject to constraint by traditional authorities. Tradition is intensely manipulatable and always reflects power relations. Such pressure on tradition is but one aspect of tourism's wider social impacts, which include changes in economic and social structure which, for many, constitute social problems which need to be addressed. At the same time, 'sustainability,' though apparently a worthy aim, can be a problematic concept, especially when applied to 'traditional' cultures, and may conflict with such ideals as egalitarianism.

James Tod's journeys among the Rajputs

This study of the British colonial administrator James Tod (1782-1835), who spent five years in north-western India (1818-22) collecting every conceivable type of material of historical or cultural interest on the Rajputs and the Gujaratis, gives special attention to his role as a mediator of knowledge about this little-known region of the British Empire in the early nineteenth century to British and European audiences. The book aims to illustrate that British officers did not spend all their time oppressing and inferiorising the indigenous peoples under their colonial authority, but also contributed to propagating cultural and scientific information about them, and that they did not react only negatively to the various types of human difference they encountered in the field.

Der Schriftsteller, Übersetzer und Pianist Wolfgang Held wurde am 15. August 1933 in Freiburg im Breisgau geboren. Er promovierte 1961 mit einer Arbeit über Georg Trakl. Von 1961-73 arbeitete er als Lektor für den Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) an den Universitäten Madras (Chennai), Ljubljana und Edinburgh. Danach wurde er Senior Lecturer an der Greenwich University (früher Thames Polytechnic) in London, wo er ab 1973 lebte. Sein literarisches Werk besteht aus Romanen, Essays sowie Prosa- und Gedichtübersetzungen. Seine Romane umspannen die Karriere als Schriftsteller von 1965 (Die im Glashaus) bis 2014 (Schattenfabel). Es erschienen außerdem Die schöne Gärtnerin (1979), Ein Brief des jüngeren Plinius, Rabenkind (1985), Geschichte der abgeschnittenen Hand (1994) und Traum vom Hungerturm (2007). Helds Werk erfuhr Anerkennung unter anderem durch Einladungen zu literarischen Veranstaltungen (Treffen der Gruppe 47 1965, Wettbewerb zum Ingeborg-Bachmann-Preis 1983) und die Verleihung des Literaturpreises des Kulturkreises im Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie (1983). Durch seine Übersetzungen für Suhrkamp brachte Held Schlüsselfiguren der englischen und irischen Literatur einer breiteren deutschen Öffentlichkeit näher. Zu den übersetzten Werken gehören eine Biographie zu und Schriften von Samuel Beckett, eine Biographie zu Bernard Shaw, eine Biographie und Briefe von T.S. Eliot und Gedichte von Emily Bronte, John Donne, John Keats, Robert Graves, Edgar Allan Poe. Seine Bewunderung für E. T. A. Hoffmann inspirierte sein einziges Theaterstück Hoffmanns Verbrennung, für das er 1994 den Berganzapreis erhielt. Das Stück wurde 2015 mit Bühnenbildern aus seinem auf Hoffmanns Werk basierenden Collagenzyklus in Bamberg uraufgeführt. Text und Collagen wurden 2015 bzw. 2013 veröffentlicht. Helds Liebe zur Musik und Kunst war für seine Arbeit von zentraler Bedeutung. Als Pianist gab er Konzerte in Madras (Chennai), Bamberg und privat in London. Er schrieb eine Reihe von Sendungen für SWF und NDR, die er mit eigenen Einspielungen von Lieblingskomponisten wie Bach, Schubert und Schumann illustrierte. Held verstarb am 11. Dezember 2016 in London.

Karl Kraus wurde am 28. April 1874 im nordböhmischen Gitschin / Österreich-Ungarn (heute: Jicín / Tschechien) als Sohn eines jüdischen Papierfabrikanten geboren. In Wien studierte er seit 1877 Jura, Philosophie und Germanistik, schloß das Studium jedoch nicht ab. Schon während der Studienzeit veröffentlichte er literaturkritische Beiträge u.a. in der Zeitschrift Die Gesellschaft. Daneben betätigte er sich als Dramatiker, Lyriker und Vortragskünstler und hatte Kontakt zu Mitgliedern der Gruppe "Jung-Wien", u.a. Arthur Schnitzler und Hugo von Hofmannsthal, von denen er sich aber 1897 in der Satire Die demolierte Literatur distanzierte. 1899 gründete er die Zeitschrift Die Fackel. Sie war zeitlebens die wichtigste Veröffentlichungsplattform für seine kulturkritischen Beiträge. Er starb am 12. Juni 1936 in Wien.
