        1 Angel Square

        The Co-operative Group's new head office

        by Len Grant

        This book charts the building of 1 Angel Square, the remarkable new head office for The Co-operative Group in Manchester's new NOMA district. Combining text and photographs to illustrate the building from commissioning to completion, Len Grant has interviewed the whole project team - clients, architects, engineers, project managers and builders - and has had unreserved access to document the creation of this already award-winning structure. The design of 1 Angel Square by the architects 3DReid, is currently the UK's highest BREEAM (Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method) rated office building to date, and it is set to be one of the most sustainable buildings in Europe. 1 Angel Square, the book, is an intimate record of this fascinating building. Some of the impressive facts include: 3,157 internal and external window panels make up the façade; there are 10,500 data and power outlets; it sits on 539 foundation piles, with an average depth of 18 metres below ground; and there are approximately 22km of power cables. This book will be required reading for students of architecture and construction, sustainability studies and urban planning, and for those with an interest in the history of one of the world's great businesses. ;

        Understanding US/UK government and politics (2nd Edn)

        A comparative guide

        by Duncan Watts

        Understanding US/UK government and politics is written specifically for A2 students and covers the comparative dimension of advanced level study. It closely follows the syllabuses of the main examination boards, is car and accessible in style, and offers invaluable insights into the similarities and differences between British and American politics. The book examines the setting against which government and politics operates in the two countries, explores the concept of political culture and examines the underlying ideas and values of British and American people, before considering the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government in detail. Political parties, the media and elections, pressure groups and voting are all extensively covered, with some concluding thoughts on the current condition of democracy in Britain and the United States. This new edition has been updated to take account of all the changes that have taken place in British and American politics since the first edition was published, including the escalation of the War on Terror, the specific terrorist threats carried out in the UK, and the underwhelming re-election of George W Bush and Tony Blair.

        Bovine Endoscopy

        by Sotirios Karvountzis

        Endoscopic applications are recognised and well-established techniques in human surgery, where a variety of procedures are performed routinely. A less intrusive and labour demanding process than surgery, these procedures have great potential for use in veterinary medicine. They allow a quicker clinical recovery, minimal intrusion and risk of bacterial exposure, and a lower mortality than conventional surgical options. Beginning with an introduction to the topic and an overview of bovine anatomy, this book then discusses both mainstream and experimental applications of endoscopy in cattle. It covers: - Practical advice on preparing for the procedure and patient restraint; - Techniques including LDA corrections, RDA corrections, exploratory laparoscopy, exploratory thoracoscopy, theloscopy and umbilical hernia corrections; - Post-operative care to allow the animal to rejoin the herd at the next milking, whenever possible. Written in a practical and accessible style for veterinary practitioners and students, the book provides a thorough and complete introduction to the exciting new field of bovine endoscopy.
