Henry Neville and English Republican Culture in the Seventeenth Century is the first full-length study of the republican Henry Neville as country gentleman, politician, political thinker, rebel and libeller. It traces the development of Neville's political thought from the English Civil Wars to the Exclusion Crisis and beyond, while also challenging the way in which the history of ideas has been conceptualised in recent years by discussing political theory alongside cheap libels, shams and poetry. While studies of early modern English republicanism tend to focus on the Interregnum, Neville's Plato redivivus, which promoted a restructuring of the political order, was only published after the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy. This study therefore draws attention to long-term continuities in English republican thought and introduces the concept of anti-patriarchalism to focus on what Neville and other republicans writing before 1649 or after 1660 had in common. This book will be of interest to students and academics of Early Modern studies ;

In seinem Buch zeigt Muschg, daß die Schweiz in den letzten Jahrzehnten entscheidende Weichenstellungen wie die, sich zu Europa zu bekennen, verpaßt und obendrein ihre eigene europäische Geschichte um das Revolutionsjahr 1848 uminterpretiert hat. Aber Muschg wäre nicht Muschg, wenn er diesen Sachverhalt nicht mit literarischen, also erzählerischen Mitteln ins Bild brächte: anhand von drei Figuren, von denen der Gründer Alfred Escher die mächtigste, der Dichter Gottfried Keller die bekannteste, beider Gegenspieler aber, der Advokat Friedrich Locher, die eigentliche Entdeckung des Buches ist. Im Spannungsfeld dieser drei entsteht (oder verfällt) »republikanische Kultur«. Sie ist der hartnäckig festgehaltene Orientierungspunkt des Schweizers Muschg. O mein Heimatland! ist ein streitbares Buch, das die Geschichte des Bundesstaates seit seiner Gründung 1848 auf ganz besondere Weise erzählt.

Noam Chomskys Buch »Reflexionen über die Sprache« (= stw 185) stellt eine Zusammenfassung der sprachphilosophischen Kontroverse zwischen Empirismus und Rationalismus und zwischen Semantik und Pragmatik dar. Es präsentiert aber auch einen neuen Entwicklungsstand in der Kontroverse darum, ob die Syntax unabhängig von der Semantik operieren kann. Chomsky führt in diesem Buch die bereits 1973 in den »Conditions of Transformation« entwickelte Spurentheorie ein und motiviert diese sowohl aus empirischen Gründen der Sprachbeschreibung als auch mit kognitiven Argumenten sowie mit Beobachtungen aus dem Prozeß des Spracherwerbs. Diese Theorie stellt eine starke Revision der bekannten Annahmen Chomskys dar. In den »Reflexionen über die Sprache« liefert Chomsky sozusagen »nur« den konzeptuellen Rahmen der neuen Spurentheorie. Helen Leuningers Arbeit diskutiert nun die methodologischen und empirischen Fragen, die sich aus dieser neuen Theorie ergeben, und stellt sie in den forschungs- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang, aus dem sie entstanden sind.
