Development in rural areas is a key research and policy issue in many industrialised countries. Central to this is the subject of rural employment. This book presents an international perspective on rural employment and has been developed from selected papers presented at a conference held in Quebec, Canada, in October 1995 and organized by the Canadian Rural Restructuring Foundation. The book consists of 30 chapters divided into seven parts. Seven chapters are reports of international comparative analyses prepared for the OECD Rural Development Programme. Another group of chapters focuses on retaining and retraining youth to stay in rural areas. Other issues addressed include lifestyle and residential choice, rural enterprises, policies to stimulate employment, the role of agriculture, and alternative niches including tourism and using the information highway. Case study material is drawn from several countries, including the USA, Canada, UK, Sweden and Finland. The book presents a timely review of an important subject that will interest a wide range of academics and policy makers in rural studies, whether from the perspective of economics, geography, sociology or planning.

Overzealous and indiscriminate use of many synthetic pesticides during recent decades in the control of plant pests has resulted in a number of environmental and toxicological problems. Reducing the release of synthetic chemicals into the environment requires that alternative sources of chemicals are developed that can be used safely in the management of plant pests. Botanical antimicrobials derived from plants are currently recognised as biodegradable, systemic, eco-friendly and non-toxic to mammals and are thus considered safe. Their modes of action against pests are diverse. Natural compounds are well suited to organic food production in industrialised countries and can play greater roles in the protection of food crops in developing countries Some plant based antimicrobials (e.g. neem products, pyrethoids and essential oils) are already used to manage pest populations on a large scale. Plant scientists and agriculturists now devote significant attention to discovery and further development and formulation of novel plant products with antimicrobial activity.This book is the first to bring together relevant aspects of the basic and applied sciences of natural pesticides and discussed modern trends in the use of natural products in pest management.

Sandra Mitchell zeigt, daß uns die Komplexität der lebendigen Welt dazu zwingt, unsere Denkmodelle radikal zu revidieren und nach einer adäquateren Erkenntnislehre zu suchen. Dazu hat die Systemtheorie Vorgaben geliefert, die seit einigen Jahren von der Komplexitätstheorie spezifiziert worden sind. Komplexe Systeme – wie die Welt, in der wir leben – zeichnen sich unter anderem durch Emergenz und Relationen aus: Was auf der Makroebene sichtbar wird, ist erst durch Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Elementen des Systems zu erklären. Wohin zum Beispiel ein Vogelschwarm fliegt, hängt nicht nur von den Individuen ab, sondern vor allem von Feedbackprozessen zwischen ihnen. Mitchell fordert deshalb: Wer die Welt verstehen will, muß auch verstehen lernen, warum das Ganze tatsächlich mehr ist als die Summe der einzelnen Teile.
