Capitalising on developments in the field over the past decade, Riddles at work provides an up-to-date microcosm of research on the early medieval riddle tradition. The book presents a wide range of traditional and experimental methodologies. The contributors treat the riddles both as individual poems and as parts of a tradition, but, most importantly, they address Latin and Old English riddles side-by-side, bringing together texts that originally developed in conversation with each other but have often been separated by scholarship. Together, the chapters reveal that there is no single, right way to read these texts but rather a multitude of productive paths. This book will appeal to students and scholars of early medieval studies. It contains new as well as established voices, including Jonathan Wilcox, Mercedes Salvador-Bello and Jennifer Neville.

Seit den frühen 1960er Jahren bis zu seinem Tod im Sommer 2003 war Donald Davidson der wohl einflußreichste Philosoph englischer Sprache. Mit Probleme der Rationalität liegt nun der vierte Band seiner philosophischen Schriften in deutscher Übersetzung vor und mit ihm eine weitere Etappe auf Davidsons Weg zu »einer einheitlichen Theorie des Denkens, der Bedeutung und des Handelns«. Der so betitelte Aufsatz bildet zugleich das programmatische Epizentrum dieses Bandes. Rationalität, so Davidsons Generalthese, ist dabei eine notwendige Bedingung, um das Denken, Sprechen und Handeln anderer interpretieren, d. h. verstehen zu können, und sie spielt eine tragende Rolle bei der Frage, welchen Wesen wir überhaupt einen Geist zusprechen können. In weiteren Abhandlungen wendet Davidson diese These etwa auf die Frage nach der Objektivität der Werte an, fragt sich, ob es eine »Wissenschaft der Rationalität « geben könne, und liefert eine scharfsinnige Analyse von »Turings Test«. Den krönenden Abschluß bilden die berühmten Aufsätze über Irrationalität. Der Band, den der Autor nicht mehr selbst zum Abschluß bringen konnte, wird von seiner Frau Marcia Cavell eingeleitet und schließt mit einem bewegenden Interview, das Ernie Lepore mit Donald Davidson über dessen Leben und Werk geführt hat.

EXCAVANDO LA CIUDAD DE DAVID – El lugar en el que comenzף la historia de Jerusalיn Las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en los 150 últimos años han identificado a la colina sudoriental de Jerusalén, fuera de las murallas de la Ciudad Vieja, como la Ciudad de David bíblica. El reconocimiento cada vez mayor de que esta colina es efectivamente la parte más antigua de Jerusalén ha llevado a muchos estudiosos a excavarla. Desde las primeras excavaciones hechas por Charles Warren en 1867 hasta el presente, catorce expediciones arqueológicas han trabajado allí, lo que ha hecho que la Ciudad de David sea uno de los sitios más excavados de Israel. Equipos británicos, alemanes, franceses e israelíes han excavado en el lugar bajo cuatro autoridades diferentes: el gobierno otomano, el mandato británico, el gobierno jordano y el israelí y han producido una asombrosa cantidad de información.
