        Charity and poverty in England, c.1680–1820

        Wild and visionary schemes

        by Sarah Lloyd

        This book explores responses to poverty in eighteenth-century England, with an eye to some of the odder manifestations of charity and poor relief. Whether discussing proposals for vast inland colonies or cosy firesides, men and women demonstrated that imagination, excitement and experiment were as important as systematic argument in making early-modern social policy. Ceremonies and material objects encapsulated ideas and attracted supporters; energy poured into realising imagined prospects in buildings, streetscapes and landscapes across England and beyond. Charity and Poverty in England aims to shed fresh light on ideas and lived experience, on cultural worlds in which social relations were unevenly worked out. It analyses the settings in which gentlemen, magistrates, officials, pamphleteers, ladies and neighbours reacted to the poverty of others, and poor people asserted their own beliefs and experiences. The book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of eighteenth-century cultural history and the history of social policy. ;

        Warum Klasse zählt

        by Erik Olin Wright, Philipp Hölzing, Oliver Nachtwey

        Was sind soziale Klassen? Was kennzeichnet sie, wie entstehen sie und wie wirken sie sich auf das Leben der Menschen aus? Der amerikanische Soziologe Erik Olin Wright hat sich ein Leben lang mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt und die bedeutendste sozialwissenschaftliche Neuformulierung der Klassentheorie vorgelegt. Sein klassischer Aufsatz »Klasse verstehen« sowie ein ausführliches Interview mit Wright darüber, warum Klasse zählt, liegen mit diesem Band nun erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung vor. Die Klassentheorie kennt drei große Traditionen: Stratifizierungsansätze definieren Klasse anhand individueller Eigenschaften und Lebensbedingungen, weberianische Ansätze anhand von Mechanismen der Chancenhortung und marxistische Ansätze anhand von Mechanismen der Ausbeutung und Herrschaft. Für Wright besteht die zentrale Aufgabe nun darin, diese Mechanismen zu verstehen, um sie in einem Erklärungsmodell zu vereinen, das die Mikroebene der Klasseneffekte, die sich an Eigenschaften von Individuen zeigen, mit den Wirkungen der Makroebene, die durch die Art der strukturellen Positionen auf dem Markt und in der wirtschaftlichen Produktion generiert werden, verbindet. Ein Meilenstein der Klassentheorie!

        Über Gewißheit

        by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Georg Henrik Wright, G. E. M. Anscombe, Rush Rhees

        Der Jubiläumsband 250 der Bibliothek Suhrkamp ist ein durch und durch philosophisches Buch. Ludwig Wittgenstein (1898-1951) – in der angelsächsischen Welt als »der größte Philosoph des 20. Jahrhunderts« geachtet, während bei uns die Diskussion über ihn erst beginnt – zieht in diesem Buch eine Summe. Er stellt die Frage: was und wie können wir wissen? Welche Grundgewißheiten gibt es in unserer Sprache, in unserem Denken, denn nur wenn wir sie wissen, können wir miteinander sprechen und uns verstehen. Die Aufzeichnungen zielen auf die Grenzen unserer Erfahrung und die Möglichkeit des Erkennens. ›Über Gewißheit‹, zum ersten Mal aus dem Nachlaß veröffentlicht, in den letzten Lebensmonaten Wittgensteins entstanden, die letzte Seite zwei Tage vor seinem Tod. Henrik von Wright schrieb: »Noch zwei Tage vor seinem Tode schrieb er neue Gedanken. Diese gehören zum Besten, was er gedacht hat.«

        The child in Spanish cinema

        by Sarah Wright

        In this, the first full-length treatment of the child in Spanish cinema, Sarah Wright explores the ways that the cinematic child comes to represent 'prosthetic memory'. The central theme of the child and the monster is used to examine the relationship of the self to the past, and to cinema. Concentrating on films from the 1950s to the present day, the book explores religious films, musicals, 'art-house horror', science-fiction, social realism and fantasy. It includes reference to Erice's The Spirit of The Beehive, del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Mañas's El Bola and the Marisol films. The book also draws on a century of filmmaking in Spain and intersects with recent revelations concerning the horrors of the Spanish past. The child is a potent motif for the loss of historical memory and for its recuperation through cinema. This book is suitable for scholars and undergraduates working in the areas of Spanish cinema, Spanish cultural studies and cinema studies.

        Biotechnology and Plant Genetic Resources

        Conservation and Use

        by Edited by J A Callow, Brian V Ford-Lloyd, H J Newbury

        Advances in molecular and cell biology have led to the development of a whole range of techniques for manipulating genomes, collectively termed “biotechnology”. Although much of the focus in the plant sciences has been on the direct manipulation of plant genomes, biotechnology has also catalyzed a renewed emphasis on the importance of biological and genetic diversity and its conservation. The methods of biotechnology now permit a greater understanding of both species and genetic diversity in plants, the mechanisms by which that variation is generated in nature, and the significance of that variation in the adaptation of plants to their environment. They allow the development of rapid methods for screening germplasm for specific characters and promote more effective conservation strategies by defining the extent of genetic diversity. Tissue culture-based techniques are available for conserving germplasm that cannot be maintained by more traditional methods. Also sophisticated informatics systems enable information on plant genetics and molecular biology to be cross-related to systematic, ecological and other data through international networks.

        Laughing matters

        Understanding film, television and radio comedy

        by Glyn White, John Mundy

        Laughing Matters takes an analytic approach to film, television and radio comedy and provides an accessible overview of its forms and contexts. The introduction explains the value of studying comedy, concisely outlines the approach taken and summarises the relevant theories. The subsequent chapters are divided into two parts. The first part examines the specific forms comedy has taken as a constant and key element in film and broadcast comedy from their origins to the present. The second part shows how the genre gravitates towards contentious issues in British and American culture as it finds humour in the boundaries of class, gender, sexuality, race and logic. The authors cover silent cinema comedy including Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton, sound film comedies including the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy, Romantic film comedy, radio, television situation and sketch comedy, comedy and genre (including parody and spoof), animations from cartoons to CGI, issues of gender and sexuality from drag comedy to queer reading, issues of taste and humour from Carry On to contemporary 'gross-out' , and issues of race and ethnicity including a case study of African-American screen comedy. Numerous opportunities for following up are highlighted and advice on further reading, writing academically about comedy and an extensive bibliography add to the value of this textbook. ;

        Kill your Darling!

        13 Trennungsstorys, die Geschichte machten

        by Jennifer Wright, Jenny Merling

        Stell dir vor, du sitzt mit einer Packung Eiscreme in der einen, einer Flasche Gin in der anderen Hand auf dem Sofa, Tränen rinnen deine Wangen hinab und du wiederholst mantrahaft, wie sehr du deinen Ex geliebt hast. Lass dir gesagt sein: Es könnte viel schlimmer sein! Du könntest beispielsweise von deinem Verflossenen enthauptet werden, aus Rache fremde Männer kastrieren oder das Leben mit einer Sexpuppe verbringen. In Kill your Darling! präsentiert die New Yorker Journalistin Jennifer Wright die dreizehn skurrilsten und blutigsten Schlussmachepisoden der Geschichte – vom Massenmörder Nero bis hin zu Oskar Kokoschka –, boshaft-ironisch und doch mit der richtigen Dosis Empathie. Ein Buch für alle, die geliebt haben und verlassen wurden; für alle, die spätnachts zu viele Wut-E-Mails an ihre Verflossenen geschickt haben. Mit diesen Storys wird schnell klar: Was auch immer passiert ist, es hätte noch viel, viel schlimmer kommen können …

        Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray

        by Oscar Wilde, Gustav Landauer, Hedwig Lachmann

        Oscar (Fingal O’Flahertie Wills) Wilde wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Dublin als Sohn des Arztes William Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee geboren. Er studierte klassische Literatur am Trinity College in Dublin und am Magdalen College in Oxford. 1879 ging er nach London, wo er sich bald durch seinen extravaganten Lebensstil und seine rhetorische Gewandtheit einen Namen machte. Nach Reisen in die USA, nach Kanada und Frankreich arbeitete Wilde zunächst für verschiedene Zeitungen als Lektor und Herausgeber. Seit 1884 mit Constance Lloyd verheiratet, schrieb und veröffentlichte er 1888 für seine eigenen Kinder die Märchensammlung The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In den folgenden Jahren entstanden weitere Erzählungen (wie The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891) und zahlreiche Bühnenstücke (wie The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895), die außerordentliches literarisches und gesellschaftliches Aufsehen erregten. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolges stürzte ihn dann jedoch der Skandal um das langjährige Verhältnis mit Lord Alfred Douglas in den Ruin. Wilde verlor eine Verleumdungsklage gegen Douglas Vater, der ihn der Sodomie bezichtigt hatte, und wurde selbst in einem Strafprozeß wegen Unzucht zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis in Reading floh er vor der gesellschaftlichen Ächtung unter falschem Namen nach Paris. Völlig mittellos starb er hier am 30. November 1900. Kurt Landauer (1884-1961), Präsident von Bayern München von 1913-33 und wieder ab 1947. Hedwig Lachmann, geboren 1865 in Stolp und verstorben 1918 in Krumbach, war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin.

        Colonial discourse / postcolonial theory

        by Francis Barker, Peter Hulme, Margaret Iverson

        The issues of colonialism and imperialism have recently come to the forefront of thinking in the humanities. Disciplines such as history, literature and anthropology are taking stock of their extensive and usually unacknowledged legacy of Empire. At the same time, contemporary cultural theory has had to respond to post-colonial pressure, with its different registers and agendas. This volume ranges, geographically, from Brazil to India and South Africa, from the Andes to the Caribbean and the USA. This range is matched by a breadth of historical perspectives. Central to the whole volume is a critique of the very idea of the "postcolonial" itself. Contributors include Annie Coombes, Simon During, Peter Hulme, Neil Lazarus, David Lloyd, Anne McClintock, Zita Nunes, Benita Parry, Graham Pechey, Mary Louise Pratt, Renato Rosaldo and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. ;
