      • Bernd Liske

        Bernd Liske, born in 1956, studied mathematics in Chemnitz and is the owner of Liske information management systems. From its founding in 1998 until May 2015, Bernd Liske was a member of the main board of BITKOM, where he worked in the defense, education and knowledge management working groups. In the course of his efforts to deal with the revelations of Edward Snowden in the NSA affair, he was expelled from BITKOM in 2015. From 1998 to 2003 he was a member of the board of the Association of Organizations and Information Systems (VOI). Bernd Liske has been dealing with socio-political issues for many years. In his analyzes and concepts, he deals with social, political and economic problems in our society in order to make contributions to maintaining Germany as a business location. His book “PRISM A Lesson for our Democracy”, published in September, grew out of this. The diversity of the topics he deals with as well as the systemic principles used for their treatment can be followed on his homepage at and on his TWITTER channels @BerndLiske, @LiskeAphorismen and @LiskeZitate. He now regards his aphorisms as an open source operating system for the analysis and design of social processes and has been using them successfully for years.

        Am 15. Februar 1952 legte die ganze Nation zu Ehren des toten Königs eine Schweigeminute ein. Es war der Tag seiner Beerdigung. Ein denkwürdiger Tag auch für die sechsjährige Mary Ward, die mit ihren Eltern und dem jüngeren Bruder auf einem Kartoffelacker in Suffolk stand. Vom Hof her hörte sie das vertraute Krächzen ihres Perlhuhns Marguerite, dem sie eine erschütternde Entdeckung mitzuteilen hat: »Ich habe eine Neuigkeit für dich, Marguerite, ich habe ein Geheimnis, das ich dir anvertrauen möchte, mein Liebling. Ich bin nicht Mary, das ist ein Irrtum. Ich bin kein Mädchen. Ich bin ein Junge.« So hat sie angefangen, die lange Reise der Mary Ward. Wahrlich keine einfache Aufgabe für die Tochter einer armen Bauernfamilie im England der 50er Jahre. 30 Jahre dauerte es, bis Mary sein darf, der sie ist. Martin. Es gibt nur wenige, die sie begleiten, der Großvater, ihre geliebte Lehrerin. Die Reise verändert Mary, aber auch ihre Familie und die Beziehungen untereinander von Grund auf. Ein langer, schmerzhafter und harter Weg bis zu dem Tag, an dem – 1980 – Post in Nashville, Kentucky eintrifft: »Lieber Martin, bitte verzeih mir. Ich hoffe sehr, dass Du es kannst. Deine Mutter Estelle.«

        This exciting book, newly available in paperback, aims to establish the historical and cultural reasons why there was only a participation rate of 7-8% by the Catholic population in policing Northern Ireland when the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) came into being in 2001, even though Catholics constituted 46% of the total population. It also aims to ascertain whether or not implementation of the Patten Commission's recommendation to recruit to the PSNI on a 50: 50 basis between Catholics and non-Catholics has resulted in greater representation and what the political and cultural obstacles might be in transforming policing from meeting colonial model criteria to those of the liberal model advocated by Patten. In doing this, author Mary Gethins uses a wealth of historical data to show that there has for a long time been a problematic relationship between the native Irish Catholic population and the police, and the reasons for Catholic under-representation in the police force can be largely put down to this legacy. A survey of Catholic police officers focusing on family history, reasons for joining the police and sacrifices perceived to have been made in joining a largely Protestant organisation provide a strong empirical evidence base from which Gethins draws illuminating lessons. The work is informed by sociological theory to show that Catholic police officers are atypical of the Catholic population at large in Northern Ireland, and best explained by the concept of fragmented identity. ;
