        The Alderley Sandhills Project

        An archaeology of community life in (post-) industrial England

        by Eleanor Conlin Casella, Sarah K. Croucher

        How did the rise of consumer society impact the domestic lives of ordinary workers? Funded by English Heritage, this study offers the first book-length archaeology of a 17th through 20th century household site in Great Britain. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, the volume situates the results of traditional archaeological excavations within a broader spectrum of archival sources, family photographs and personal memories of former site residents to consider the dramatic influences of industrialization and subsequent de-industrialisation on the material world of a rural community in the North-West of England. Organised as a series of thematic chapters, the book emphasizes the social nature of household archaeology, drawing the reader from excavated artifacts into domestic spaces, historic events, community identities, and family memories. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars and students, in addition to those interested in local history, archaeology, and family genealogies.

        Journey in Trumplandia: The Rise of Populism in America

        by Tiberiu Dianu

        The book is a collection of essays about the transformation of America, which has turned from a united nation to one more divided than ever. Some pundits predict that, if things don’t change, another civil war could occur. Have we reached a point of no return? Hopefully, America is mature enough to learn from its mistakes and avoid further scars along its evolving history. "Trumplandia is a welcome addition toward understanding current events, Washington’s international policy, and the present American society; a society polarized and divided as it has not been since the Civil War.” NICHOLAS DIMA, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor and Research Associate, Nelson Institute, James Madison University, Virginia. "The book is fascinating. It provides background to, and insights into [the] current and past political history as well as offering a personal view... of the country and society. Presented in thematic form in chapters and sections, the insights offered provide a suggestive radiography...” Dr. DENNIS DELETANT, OBE, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington DC. "There has been this backsliding in... what a truly functioning rule-of-law state is, that has proper separation of co-equal powers, which, if you don’t keep working on that, you backslide. And I am even worried about that here, in the United States right now, about backsliding.” OBIE MOORE, Esq., OLM Advisors LLC, Washington DC “Indeed, Trumplandia should be a welcome addition to any scholar, student or layman’s library, especially in its international edition. If anyone loses sleep over its challenging assertions, then it will have been well worth it.” ERNESTO MORALES HIZON, Ph.D. Candidate in American and Comparative Politics at Claremont Graduate University, Member, Integrated Bar of the Philippines ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TIBERIU DIANU has practiced law in Romania (as a corporate lawyer, judge, senior counselor at the Ministry of Justice, university professor and senior legal researcher), and in the United States (as a legal expert for the judiciary). He published several books and a host of articles in law, politics, and post-communist societies. Tiberiu currently lives and works in Washington, DC.

        The Economy of Burma/Myanmar on the Eve of the 2010 Elections

        by Lex Rieffel

        This report examines the economy of Burma at a crucial moment in Southeast Asia’s most troubled country. A low-intensity conflict based on ethnic and religious differences has simmered since independence in 1948. The country’s military rulers have been waging an existential struggle with a democratic movement led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi since they repudiated her party’s election victory in 1990. Before the end of 2010, an election will be held that is more about transferring power to a new generation of military officers than making a transition to civilian rule. To focus attention on the economic dimension of peacebuilding in Burma, this report draws on the discussion at a day-long workshop sponsored by USIP’s Center for Sustainable Economies. The workshop brought together experts on key aspects of Burma’s economy and employees from Congress and U.S. government departments and agencies directly concerned with U.S. relations with Burma. The workshop sessions focused on macroeconomic policy, the extractive sectors, agriculture, the private sector, trade and investment, and the narcotics economy. Professor Joseph Stiglitz led the concluding session on a more productive agrarian economy.

        Memoirs of Lex van Weren

        by Dick Walda

        This almost cinematic work grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let you go - Reporters Online Lex van Weren was one of the greatest trumpet players of the last century. In the fifties and sixties he caused a furore as conductor of the popular City Theatre Orchestra in Amsterdam. In addition, he played trumpet for radio and television for many years, and gained great popularity with his disinterested performances for charities. In 1964 he was one of the first to receive a Golden Harp, thanks to his great contributions to Dutch light music. Van Weren was silent about his war time memories for decades, until writer Dick Walda managed to persuade him to tell his incredible story in 1980. Van Weren was one of the few to have survived Auschwitz. His performances in the "camp orchestra" gave him a position that enabled him not only to save himself but to be of support to others - even during Germany's infamous death march. His impressive eyewitness account shows how war and fascism really deform people.   With his story, Lex van Weren (1920-1996) wanted to call for vigilance: "Freedom is the most precious good that we possess." A message that has still not lost any of its urgency.

        by Lex Chase, Reese Dante

        Darkmore Saga: Book OneOn the Coastal Bend of Texas, a hidden kingdom called Darkmore lies in ruins, and King Sevon Maraté is trapped. Using Sevon as a mouthpiece and a scapegoat, Lord Dominic rules from the shadows. Sevon copes with the unrelenting abuse by dressing in women's finery and casting an image of graceful nobility. Born of royal verkolai blood and as beautiful as he is lethal, he possesses the ability to part the Veil separating his world from hundreds of others. His gift is his chance to escape, but Dominic refuses to relinquish his tool for power. Dominic forges an ambitious plan to invade the prosperous land of Priagust. Only a select few know the mythic kingdom of shifters exists. Sevon is out of options for his people’s survival, and cooperating with Dominic is his only chance.On their foray into Priagust, Dominic's men kidnap and interrogate a shifter named Jack. Even under torture, Jack's loyalty to his kind never wavers. But as Jack’s knowledge about Darkmore’s king and its history unsettles Sevon, a curious bond begins to form. Despite Sevon’s mistrust, Jack is determined to tame Sevon’s wild heart and perhaps earn his freedom. As invasion looms, Sevon wonders if trusting Jack will lead him into another trap or if he should forget about chasing the sunrise and remain Dominic's compliant prisoner.100% of the presale royalties of this book will go to Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Domestic Violence Service. ;
