Evaluating Indirect Ecological Effects of Biological Control

by Edited by Eric Wajnberg, John K Scott, Paul C Quimby

A major concern for biological control has always been the risk of indirect unwanted effects on the ecology of other organisms. Our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary processes underlying these effects has until now been limited and experimental methods sometimes lacking. This book presents the key papers from of the first International Organisation for Biological Control global symposium, held in Montpellier, France, in October 1999. It addresses the issues and concerns involved in biological control, and assesses the current status of evaluation of the ecological effects.

        Forests and Landscapes

        Linking Ecology, Sustainability and Aesthetics

by Edited by Eric Wajnberg, John K Scott, Paul C Quimby

Forests are an important component in the visual appeal of landscapes. There is an increasing recognition of the importance of this subject among foresters and environmental scientists. Increasingly, forest resource managers must consider both the aesthetic consequences of timber harvesting operations and management plans and public perceptions of the sustainability of forest eco-system management.Written by world class authorities this book is the first to address this subject area. It consists of 17 chapters and is divided into six parts. The interdisciplinary nature of the book brings together not only foresters and ecologists, but also landscape architects, psychologists and philosophers. Contributors are leading research workers in their subjects, from Canada, the USA and UK.

        Tropical Tuber Starches

        Structural and Functional Characteristics

        by S N Moorthy, M S Sajeev, R P K Ambrose, R J Anish

This book provides comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge relating to the morphological, structural, and functional characteristics of tuber starches, particularly in relation to their applications in food and industry. In recent years there has been significant progress and extensive research conducted on tropical root starches and especially on some of the lesser known tuber crop starches. There has also been a shift towards using biomaterials in place of synthetic materials in various applications. As researchers investigate the availability of natural products with similar properties, starch has been identified as a reliable alternative to these synthetic materials. Reflecting the growing body of research, Tropical Tuber Starches: - Explores the structure, properties and applications of tropical root and tuber starches (cassava, sweet potato, aroids, yams and other minor tuber crops) - Includes a chapter on the methodology for starch characterisation - Covers patents on starch-based products and the commercial potential of tropical root starches A valuable resource for researchers and students, plant breeders, and commercial producers working with, or considering working with, tropical tuber starches. Table of Contents 1: Introduction - Tropical Tuber Crops and Their Importance 2: Starch - General Considerations 3: Cassava 4: Sweet Potato 5: Aroids 6: Yams 7: Other Starches 8: Starch Modifications 9: Applications of Tuber Starches 10: Characterization and Analysis of Starches 11: Conclusions and Future Prospects

        Crop Science

        Progress and Prospects

by Edited by Josef Nösberger, Hartwig H Geiger, Paul C Struik

This book includes keynote invited papers from the Third International Crop Science Congress held in Hamburg, Germany in August 2000. All papers have been prepared and revised within strict editorial guidelines to ensure that the work is a balanced review text that provides an overview of the major issues confronting crop science today and in the future. It therefore represents a suitable advanced textbook for students as well as offering research workers concise overviews of topics adjacent to their areas of research. Contributors include leading world authorities from Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Techniques for Work with Plant and Soil Nematodes

by Roland N Perry, David J Hunt, Sergei A Subbotin

Techniques for Work with Plant and Soil Nematodes is an up-to-date, comprehensive book covering the practicalities of working with and studying soil and plant nematodes. Written by an international team of experts, this book is highly illustrated and provides thorough coverage of methods whilst allowing for relevant information to be located quickly. It includes the fundamental traditional techniques and new methodologies, covering: sampling; extraction; estimating numbers; handling, fixing, staining, mounting; culturing techniques; figure preparation, measurement and image processing; electron microscopy techniques; behavioural and physiological assays; and cytogenetic, biochemical and molecular biology techniques. This book is an essential resource for anyone involved in plant nematology needing to refer to a readily available methodology standard, including students of nematology and parasitology, university lecturers and researchers, diagnostic laboratories, and quarantine and advisory service personnel. It provides a much needed compendium of the spectrum of information needed to work with these microscopic organisms.

        Spectaculum 37

        Sechs moderne Theaterstücke

by Samuel Beckett, Sean O’Casey, Edward Bond, Thomas Brasch, Cecil P. Taylor, Martin Walser, Elmar Tophoven
