1572 als fürstliche Sammlung gegründet, galt die Herzog August Bibliothek in der welfischen Residenzstadt Wolfenbüttel bereits im 17. Jahrhundert als achtes Weltwunder. Die Zahl ihrer Drucke machte sie zur größten Bibliothek Europas. Ihre Sammlung mittelalterlicher Handschriften gehörte und gehört zu den weltweit bedeutendsten. Unter den Bibliothekaren, die ihr vorstanden, waren Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz und Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Zum 450. Geburtstag des berühmten Hauses erzählt Peter Burschel, der die »HAB« seit 2016 leitet, die Geschichte dieser einzigartigen Sammlung als Wissensgeschichte in Büchern. Der Band enthält zahlreiche Abbildungen.
