The Publishing House and its History Established in St. Petersburg in 1792, today Gerstenberg is one of Germany’s oldest publishing houses. A family business, the publishing house moved to new headquarters in Hildesheim in 1796 and to this day occupies the same address in the old city marketplace as it did then. The most important branch of the publishing business, however, was the Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, which, incidentally, is the oldest daily newspaper still in existence in Germany. Today, the name of Gerstenberg is synonymous with delightful, innovative books of aesthetic design and high-quality content for children and young adults that compete very successfully also on the international market. An adult range comprising illustrated books, non-fiction and cookery books also forms part of the Gerstenberg portfolio. Program Gerstenberg publishes board picture books, picture books, children’s and young adult narrative literature and non-fiction. With Eric Carle’s »The Very Hungry Caterpillar« (»Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt«) and Rotraut Susanne Berner’s ›discovery picture books‹ (›Wimmelbücher‹), Gerstenberg became one of the best-known children’s book publishers. In 1999, the anthology of poetry »Dunkel war’s, der Mond schien helle«, came out as the first in Gerstenberg’s series of household compendiums, a segment that has since developed into a main pillar of the program. The publishing house has brought out some highly respected developments of its own in the children’s knowledge-book series ›Abenteuer! Maja Nielsen erzählt‹.

2019Why ADHD is Not a Disease

In some European countries, one in four children is now diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) due to their socially disruptive behaviour. The treatment usually consists of suppressing the symptoms with psychostimulants such as Ritalin. This treatment does not improve school performance, but it curbs the children’s creativity and may stigmatise them for their entire lives. Taking an opposing viewpoint, ADHD expert Dr. Amrei Wittwer focuses on the physical and psychological well-being of the affected children. Because almost all “ADHD patients“ are facing difficulties in relationships with adults, she considers that a solution begins with the children’s domestic and school environments, instruction of parents and teachers, and by using therapeutic approaches rather than simply sedating the children. “Children are our future”, is a common theme in Sunday speeches. Anyone who takes this point seriously, whether or not they themselves are immediately affected, should think about this important topic.

Seit 2007 prekarisiert das Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz Arbeitsbedingungen und Berufsaussichten des akademischen Mittelbaus: Das Gros der Wissenschaftler:innen hangelt sich von einem befristeten Job zum nächsten, und wer nach zwölf Jahren keine feste Stelle hat, fällt endgültig aus dem System heraus. Als 2021 ein Video des Forschungsministeriums in den Fokus gerät, in dem am Beispiel der fiktiven Biologin »Hanna« die vermeintlichen Vorzüge des Gesetzes gepriesen werden, lancieren Amrei Bahr, Kristin Eichhorn und Sebastian Kubon den Hashtag #IchBinHanna. Binnen weniger Stunden machen zahllose Wissenschaftler:innen ihrem Ärger Luft. Sie schildern die Auswirkungen der Prekarität auf ihr Leben, berichten von Überlastung und Depressionen. Die Medien greifen das Thema auf, und »Hanna« schafft es wenig später sogar in den Bundestag. In ihrer Streitschrift legen die Initiator:innen dar, welche Folgen das »WissZeitVG« für Forschende und Studierende, aber auch für den Wissenschaftsstandort Deutschland und unsere Gesellschaft insgesamt hat. Sie resümieren die Erfahrungsberichte unter #IchBinHanna und präsentieren ihre Forderungen für bessere Arbeitsbedingungen in Forschung und Lehre.

The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. These fascinating narrative sources bear witness to the startling impact of the papal reform and of the 'Investiture Contest', the conflict of empire and papacy that was one of its consequences. Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced. The book includes chapters that summarize the importance of nematodes as model organisms in the fields of genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, nutrition, ecology and parasitology. Of interest to a broad audience across a wide spectrum of disciplines, the book is useful for biologists working on comparative studies to investigate biological processes across organisms; medical scientists and pharmacologist for exploration of drugs and medicine (including the use of genome editing to eliminate diseases); ecologists considering nematodes as indicators for environment changes; and parasitologists for host-parasite interactions.
