Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes

Nach seinen sprachphilosophischen Arbeiten ('Sprechakte', stw 458; 'Ausdruck und Bedeutung', stw 349) hat John R. Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

A GIS Application for Research in Planning in Kenya

Scientists at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) have developed powerful new tools to improve the effectiveness of their maize research, enabling the rapid development and successful transfer of maize technology in Kenya. The Kenya Maize Data Base Project (MDBP) was established in 1992 with the help of the Rockefeller Foundation, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the US Agency for International Development. This has allowed scientists to use advanced technology to prioritize and evaluate maize research options more effectively, by taking into account such variables as climatic effects and the socioeconomic conditions of farmers. This book describes in detail the development and application of the MDBP, which uses spatial analysis to integrate data from Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with the results of biological experiments, socioeconomic statistics (including interviews with farmers) and agroclimatic information. This provides a powerful planning tool for targeting new technology to the needs of farmers. The book contains sections on survey methods, ex ante research evaluation and priority setting, and patterns of maize technology diffusion and the impact of research. It concludes with a synthesis of the MDBP results and assessment of future choices. This book is essential reading for maize agronomists, crop modellers, agricultural and development economists, extension workers and planners.

The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. Heinrich Hoffmann, geboren 1809 in Frankfurt am Main, studierte Medizin in Heidelberg und Halle. Später arbeitete er in verschiedenen Frankfurter Kliniken, u.a. einer Klinik für Mittellose. Seit 1842 verfasste Hoffmann Theaterstücke, Gedichte und Kinderbücher. Bekanntheit erlangte er mit dem Struwwelpeter, für das er die Bilder eigens gemalt hatte. Heinrich Hoffmann verstarb 1894 in Frankfurt am Main. Mark Twain wurde am 30. November 1835 als Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida / Missouri geboren. Nach dem Tod des Vaters brach er mit zwölf Jahren die Schule ab und arbeitete zunächst als Lehrling in einer Druckerei, später auch als Journalist, Goldgräber, Publizist und Lotse auf einem Mississippi-Dampfer. Twain machte Reisen u.a. nach Europa und Palästina, bevor er sich in Hartford niederließ und heiratete. Neben der Schriftstellerei unternahm er auch Vortragsreisen in der ganzen Welt. Twain wurde insbesondere durch die Abenteuer von Huckleberry Finn und Tom Sawyer bekannt. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts und besticht besonders durch sein humoristisches und satirisches Talent. Noch zu seinen Lebzeiten starben seine Frau und die beiden Töchter, Twain selbst starb am 21. April 1910.
