"Das »Bacon-Projekt« definiert einen Grundzug der Moderne; während in der Antike die Erkenntnis der Natur als Selbstzweck galt, betrachtet sie die Neuzeit als ein Mittel zur Mehrung des allgemeinen Menschenwohls. Die Naturforschung soll die Entwicklung einer Technik ins Werk setzen und damit dem Menschen Machtmittel zur Verfügung stellen, durch die er sich aus materieller Not und Naturabhängigkeit befreien kann. Francis Bacon (1551-1626) war der Propagandist der neuen Zielbestimmung der Naturforschung. Die in den modernen Industrieländern praktizierte technische Form der Naturnutzung ist infolge der jetzt offenkundig werdenden Schädigungen an der Natur zunehmend unter Kritik geraten. Mit den Befunden der »ökologischen Krise« wird nicht nur auf die Bedrohlichkeit der Technikfolgeschäden hingewiesen, sondern es wird zugleich die neuzeitliche Art der Naturforschung für die absehbare Katastrophe verantwortlich gemacht. Hans Jonas hat deshalb verlangt, daß wir das »Baconsche Ideal« aufgeben und uns dem Gedanken der Bewahrung der Natur verschreiben. Nicht länger sollten Ziele und Zwecke des Menschen die Grundlage unseres Handelns gegenüber der Natur sein; das »Prinzip Verantwortung« gebiete vielmehr, die in der westlichen Zivilisation dominant gewesene »Anthropozentrik« zu verabschieden und die Eigenrechte der Natur in unserem Handeln zu respektieren. Gegen diese pauschale Beschuldigung der Moderne ist die vorliegende Studie gerichtet. Schäfer sieht durch die ökologische Krise nicht die Aufkündigung des Baconschen Ideals geboten - wohl aber eine drastische Revision des »Baconschen Programms«, d.h. der Mittel und Methoden, mit denen das Ideal seither verfolgt wurde."

Providing good quality education to all children in the poorest countries of the world is not a simple task. However, improving children’s health and nutrition is one simple step that can be taken towards achieving this goal. Health and nutrition programmes offer substantial benefits to children’s education, helping them to attend school and learn while there. What is more, the education of the poorest in society benefits the most from such programmes because the poor are more likely to suffer from ill health or poor nutrition and are also more likely to experience a disruption in their learning as a result. School health and nutrition programmes make use of the education system to deliver simple treatments for common conditions. The result is a highly cost-effective way to reduce inequalities in education and to help all children around the world reach their educational potential. This argument is examined through a discussion of the challenges to child health and nutrition and the impact of these on education and an analysis of the costs, benefits and policy options involved in the implementation of health and nutrition programmes in schools. Providing a simple and achievable solution to improving access, gender equity and the quality of basic education, this book will be essential to policy makers, educational and health organizations and researchers in international development, public health, psychology and education.

La historia es semi biográfica y toma lugar de forma parcial en Alepo, Siria, el lugar de nacimiento del autor. El libro describe la vida, las luchas, y la dispersión de una adinerada familia de sirio-judíos durante el curso de tres generaciones, comenzando a los mediados de los años 30. La historia de la familia Ezra Safra es la historia de una familia judía del medio oriente y sus valores básicos tradicionales, los cuales son constantemente desafiados por otras normas, ya sean circunstanciales como universales. Sacudida por levantamientos locales como globales, la familia encabezada por Michel y su hermosa esposa Linda, es obligada a abandonar su hogar, la ciudad de Alepo, durante los disturbios generados por la resolución de las Naciones Unidas a finales de 1947, de establecer el estado judío en Palestina. Michel, un hombre práctico, continúa manejando su imperio económico. Su poder sobre sus hijos parece desvanecerse, sin embargo, aunque aún disfruta de su respeto y cariño. A través de la novela, el lector sigue a Michel a través de sus viajes por el mundo, estableciendo asuntos familiares como comerciales. Sin embargo sufre de una débil salud y de culpa de conciencia. La vida de su hijo Alberto, ahora un influyente miembro de una comunidad colectiva en Israel, es completamente ajeno a él. La saga de la familia Ezra Safra llega a su final cuando Michel muere de tristeza unos pocos días después de la muerte de su nieto durante la guerra de los Seis Días en 1967. Se graduó en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén .Es autor tanto de poesía como de prosa para niños y adultos, su trabajo se ha traducido al inglés, al español, y al francés, y una de sus novelas fue llevada a la televisión en forma de miniserie. Amnon Shamosh ha sido galardonado con el Premio "Agnon", denominado con ese nombre en honor al laureado célebre israelí Nóbel de Literatura, el Premio "Shalom-Aleichem", el Premio del Primer Ministro de creatividad, el Premio de literatura del presidente de Israel, y numerosos premios de literatura adicionales.
