George Bernard Shaw wurde am 26. Juli 1856 als Sohn eines Beamten in Dublin geboren. 1876 zog er nach London, wo er sich als einer der führenden Musik- und Theaterkritiker etablieren konnte. Shaw betätigte sich auch auf politischer Bühne und wurde u.a. Mitglied der Fabian Society. Seine schriftstellerische Laufbahn begann er mit fünf erfolglosen Romanen, wandte sich dann dem Schreiben von Dramen – darunter vielen Komödien – zu, die sich durch die Verbindung von Ironie, Satire und Kritik an gesellschaftlichen und politischen Mißständen auszeichnen. Shaws Gesamtwerk umfaßt über 60 Dramen. 1925 wurde er mit dem Literaturnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Er starb am 2. November 1950 in Ayot Saint Lawrence.

The idea of the end is an essential motivic force in the poetry of Geoffrey Hill (1932-2016). This book shows that Hill's poems are characteristically 'end-directed'. They tend towards consummations of all kinds: from the marriages of meanings in puns, or of words in repeating figures and rhymes, to syntactical and formal finalities. The recognition of failure to reach such ends provides its own impetus to Hill's poetry. This is the first book on Hill to take account of his last works. It is a significant contribution to the study of Hill's poems, offering a new thematic reading of his entire body of work. By using Hill's work as an example, the book also touches on questions of poetry's ultimate value: what are its ends and where does it wish to end up?

The Arctic region has been the subject of much popular writing. This book considers nineteenth-century representations of the Arctic, and draws upon an extensive range of evidence that will allow the 'widest connections' to emerge from a 'cross-disciplinary analysis' using different methodologies and subject matter. It positions the Arctic alongside more thoroughly investigated theatres of Victorian enterprise. In the nineteenth century, most images were in the form of paintings, travel narratives, lectures given by the explorers themselves and photographs. The book explores key themes in Arctic images which impacted on subsequent representations through text, painting and photography. For much of the nineteenth century, national and regional geographical societies promoted exploration, and rewarded heroic endeavor. The book discusses images of the Arctic which originated in the activities of the geographical societies. The Times provided very low-key reporting of Arctic expeditions, as evidenced by its coverage of the missions of Sir John Franklin and James Clark Ross. However, the illustrated weekly became one of the main sources of popular representations of the Arctic. The book looks at the exhibitions of Arctic peoples, Arctic exploration and Arctic fauna in Britain. Late nineteenth-century exhibitions which featured the Arctic were essentially nostalgic in tone. The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures, published in 1900, drew on adult representations of the Arctic and will have confirmed and reinforced children's perceptions of the region. Text books, board games and novels helped to keep the subject alive among the young.

Er nahm als Kriegsfreiwilliger am Ersten Weltkrieg teil (ab 1917 Kompanieführer einer Sturmkompagnie). Nach dem Aufenthalt in einem Sanatorium 1918 studierte er Germanistik. Im folgenden Jahrzehnt wirkte er nacheinander als Lehrer (Odenwaldschule und Freie Schulgemeinde Wickersdorf), zwischen 1921 und 1925 als Dramaturg und Regisseur (Darmstadt) sowie (1925-1929) als Pädagogischer Leiter (Wickersdorf), danach als freier Journalist (Berliner Tagblatt) in Berlin und als Zeitschriftenredakteur im Haus Ullstein (Uhu). 1932 Herausgeber der Hauszeitschrift des S. Fischer Verlags, Die neue Rundschau, wurde er im Herbst 1933 Vorstandsmitglied im Verlag. Nach dessen Umwandlung in eine Kommanditgesellschaft 1936 leitete er ihn allein. Ab 1942 musste er den Verlag umbenennen in Suhrkamp Verlag. Am 13. April 1944 wurde er verhaftet und wegen »Hochverrat u. Landesverrat« unter Anklage gestellt, am 8. Februar 1945 aus dem Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen entlassen. Am 4. Oktober 1945 erhielt er als erster Verleger eine Lizenz von der Britischen Militärregierung für den Suhrkamp Verlag Berlin, kurz danach die einer Amerikanischen Militärregierung. 1950 erfolgte die Trennung von Gottfried Bermann Fischer, als dessen Treuhänder sich Suhrkamp verstanden hatte, und der Eintrag einer Einzelhandelsfirma Suhrkamp Verlag mit Sitz in Frankfurt am Main. 1951 gründete er die Bibliothek Suhrkamp; im selben Jahr erhielt er die Ehrendoktorwürde der Philosophischen Fakultät der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt. Peter Suhrkamp starb am 31. März 1959.
