        by Truman Capote, Ulrike Seyer

        "Die junge Generation hat auch heute Respekt vor dem Alter, allerdings nur noch beim Wein, beim Whisky und bei den Möbeln." Norman Mailer bezeichnete Truman Capote als „vollkommensten Schriftsteller meiner Generation“: „Bissig wie meine Großtante schreibt er die besten Sätze, Wort für Wort, Takt für Takt.“ Und Tennessee Williams ergänzt: "Er ist eine entzückend lasterhafte alte Dame." Not Our Day to Die

        by Michael Sullivan

        It was work for Mike Sullivan–a flying job like the ones he'd done most of his life in many parts of the world–ferrying people, medicine, crops, supplies and almost anything else you can think of among the isolated jungle villages of Guatemala. Life in the farming co-ops there was simple, peaceful, and good, based on bedrocks of family, community, and faith. Then the repression began. A failed attempt at a coup had led to continued fighting between rebels and government, though in areas far from the almost-utopian Ixcan region. U.S. military and CIA intervention helped defeat the insurgency, but the social inequalities that had led to the movement remained, and the revolution went underground. The Guatemalan army, searching everywhere for those who opposed it, increased its control over the isolated jungle area. Co-op directors, teachers, catechists, and then anyone suspected of being one of or assisting the guerrillas was selectively "disappeared." The army turned to a scorched-earth policy, killing animals, burning crops, uprooting fruit trees, destroying towns, massacring their people. Throughout the Ixcan, those who survived fled. Some returned to their original mountain villages, others crossed the border into Mexico, and a third group survived for sixteen years hiding in the jungle–men, women, and children. Primeval growth took over the land as the war with the guerrilla movement raged on to encompass the entire nation. When finally peace accords were signed, the people of the Ixcan returned. Homes were rebuilt, land reclaimed, the area thrived again. But sixteen years were lost, along with countless lives. For Mike Sullivan, who had returned there when his help was needed, the story of those years–of how the people of the Ixcan survived, and of the many who didn't–was one that had to be told. In three visits, he conducted the interviews that form this book, talking with the villagers he'd known long before. At first, they spoke hesitantly, then with the flood force of vivid memory, telling of their first arrival at the Ixcan, the lives they'd made, and the years of the repression and worse. Their stories are gripping, fascinating, painful–but most of all, deeply human as we witness their struggle to survive and feel the force of the simple values that ultimately carried them through to a new and better life.

        Manchester minds

        A university history of ideas

        by Stuart Jones

        A bicentennial celebration of brilliant thinkers from The University of Manchester's history. The year 2024 marks two centuries since the establishment of The University of Manchester in its earliest form. Bertrand Blier

        by Sue Harris

        The most complete study of Blier's work to date, Harris traces the director's career from the early 1960s until the present. Outlines the forms, themes and style which dominate in Blier's work, and challenges the many labels that have been used to describe both the corpus of films and the man himself. Provides an original and controversial discussion of Blier's alleged 'misogyny', and invites the reader to understand the scatological and corporeal aspects of Blier's filmmaking in terms of long-established traditions of popular dramatic culture. Brings to light the comic mechanisms underpinning Blier's films and identifies strategies which navigate through one of the most entertaining and disconcerting bodies of work of recent years. The first book on Blier published in English.

        Men, ideas and tanks

        British military thought and armoured forces, 1903?39

        by J. P. Harris

        Men, ideas and tanks reviews the development of British military ideas on armoured forces from 1903 to 1939. Great Britain was the nation which first developed the tank, first used it in action and first gained dramatic results by employment. The British continued to be world leaders in the field of mechanised warfare until the early 1930s. J. P. Harris offers strikingly new interpretations of the early history of British armoured forces and explains why Great Britain had lost the lead by the outbreak of the Second World War. Available in paperback once more, this work will be of interest to all those concerned with British military history in the first half of the twentieth century, with the history of mechanised warfare and with the history of military thought. ;

        Phil the Frog

        by Hanna Zeyen

        Phil is a cheerful frog who is very happy with his life. He has days, though, when nothing goes right: his mother scolds him for being careless, his teacher is cross because he won’t sit still, and his best friend is angry because he has annoyed her. On days like this, his mother grumbles and says that Phil must have “ants in his pants” again. It seems to Phil that sometimes there is a creature inside him that holds his ears shut and tosses words out of his mouth, making him hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive. He decides to tell his mother this. To his surprise, she isn’t cross with him, but understands him and gets on the phone to all sorts of people. Eventually she tells him that they will soon be going to see a specialist. The specialist teaches him lots of tricks that he can use to deal with his “creature,” and Phil is relieved. Target Group: Parents and therapists of children between the ages of 7 and 10; children who have been diagnosed with ADHD or are about to be assessed for it, children assessed as being below the threshold for a diagnosis of ADHD but need support in dealing with ADHD symptoms.

        Plague, Third Edition

        by Donald Emmeluth, Ed.D.

        Plague has erupted periodically throughout most of human history. The plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, is transmitted by fleas found on many common mammals and through the air as victims develop respiratory symptoms and suffer from coughing spells. This easy transmission has made plague responsible for some of the highest death rates from any epidemic disease in history. Plague, Third Edition examines the disease from an epidemiological perspective. Studies of the historical European plague outbreaks, known as the Black Death, examine the role animals play in the spread of disease and the human cost of such a widespread outbreak. This revised edition includes new photographs and illustrations as well as updated statistics on modern plague outbreaks in the American southwest.  Chapters include: Historical Overview Causes of the Plague Animal Plague Vectors Diagnosis Treatment Prevention The Problems of Antibiotic Resistance Concerns for the Future Hopes for the Future.
