At the dawn of the 20th Century, several writers who were to become famous under the title of "Modernists" were advancing a deep agenda for reform in the faith and praxis of the Roman Catholic Church. But their agenda met with serious and scholarly opposition from another group of writers, whose essays are here made available in English. They include the historian and university rector Pierre Battifol, the biblical exegete M.J. Lagrange, OP, the Jesuit historical theologians Eugène Portalié and Léonce de Grandmaison, and the philosophers Eugène Franon and Joannès Wehrlé. All welcomed the historico-critical methods of research, and far from thinking them fatal to orthodoxy (as the Modernists did), they thought the Church's faith would survive and be strengthened by rigorous scholarship. These thinkers, then, are the true predecessors of Pius XII (Divino afflante Spiritu) and Vatican II (Dei Verbum). At the same time, these men thought outside the boxes drawn by 19th Century Positivism (Loisy), anti-intellectualist pragmatism (LeRoy), and romantic mysticism (Tyrrell). Their concerns hold new significance in the light of John Paul II's 1990 encyclical Fides et Ratio. Reading these too-long forgotten writers, then, deepens in a new way one's understanding of the Catholic Church's decision to decline and even condemn the Modernists' agenda, whether one ultimately applauds that decision or deplores it. ;

Ce livre analyse les circonstances historico-sociales qui ont caractérisé l’implantation des missions catholiques en Afrique centrale. Il aborde l’histoire de l’évangélisation de l’Oubangui-Chari (actuelle République centrafricaine) en se basant sur les rapports entre l’Administration coloniale et les Missions catholiques. A travers des archives rares et des documents très anciens, l’auteur décortique la période des explorations ainsi que le fonctionnement de l’administration coloniale en Afrique, en partant de la conquête progressive du territoire oubanguien, des méthodes coloniales brutales, des mouvements de résistance aux abus des colons jusqu’au cheminement qui a conduit à la lutte pour l’indépendance de l’actuelle République centrafricaine. Dans un contexte anticlérical assez prononcé, surtout en France, le sentiment anticatholique en vogue en Europe a-t-il été transposé aux colonies? Quelle a été la réaction des missionnaires face aux brutalités et à la violence de l’administration coloniale sur la population locale? Face à la méfiance généralisée des communautés autochtones à la présence forcée des colons européens en Afrique, comment les missionnaires ont-ils été accueillis par la population locale? Ce livre jette un regard rétrospectif sur les relations entre la colonisation et les missions catholiques en Afrique centrale. Il vise à éclairer le présent et à envisager l’avenir dans un environnement fondé sur un dialogue sincère et tolérant entre les civilisations. A travers cette recherche, l’auteur cherche à contribuer à l’amélioration des relations Sud-Sud et Nord-Sud et au soulagement de la misère humaine dans une Afrique centrale marquée par des incompréhensions ayant généré des tragédies successives depuis l’époque coloniale à nos jours, en dépit d’innombrables ressources humaines et naturelles dont regorgent les Etats de l’Afrique centrale.
