Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) war ein reisefreudiger Mann. Im Frühjahr 1831 fuhr er durch Deutschland und hielt seine Eindrücke in einem Reisebuch fest. Es sind die Schönheiten der Gegend um Dresden, die ihn besonders entzückten, es war die freundliche Aufnahme »vortrefflicher Menschen«, die ihm guttat, und es war die geheimnisvolle Melancholie, die über der Sächsischen Schweiz liegt, die seiner Herzensstimmung entgegenkam. Der Reisebericht, der in der ersten deutschen Gesamtausgabe von 1847 erschien, war um zahlreiche politische, religiöse und persönliche Passagen gekürzt worden, Kürzungen, die spätere Ausgaben beibehielten. Hier liegt Andersens Reisebericht erstmals mit dem ungekürzten Text vor: in der vollständigen Fassung in Deutschland ein bislang fast unbekanntes Werk.

Hans Christian Andersen wurde am 2. April 1805 in Odense / Dänemark geboren. Er war Sohn eines verarmten Schuhmachers einer alkoholkranken Wäscherin. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters ging er mit 14 Jahren nach Kopenhagen, um dort am Theater Schauspieler zu werden. Nachdem ihm das jedoch nicht gelang, versuchte er sich ebenso vergeblich als Sänger und verfaßte erste kleine Gedichte. Andersen unternahm mehrere Reisen nach Deutschland, England, Italien, Spanien und in das Osmanische Reich. Von der italienischen Landschaft inspiriert entstanden die ersten Vorformen der Kleinen Meerjungfrau. Die Beschreibung der Welt in dem gleichnamigen Märchen zeigt deutlich die italienischen Einflüsse. Andersen ist insbesondere für seine mehr als 160 Märchen bekannt, er schrieb er jedoch auch Romane, Novellen, Dramen, Gedichte, Reiseberichte sowie autobiographische Schriften. Der international verehrte und anerkannte sowie hochdekorierte Künstler starb am 4. August 1875 in Kopenhagen.
