Die Korrespondenz zwischen Gretel Adorno und Walter Benjamin, die 1930 einsetzt, aber erst mit Benjamins Emigration nach Frankreich ihre volle Intensität erreicht, ist nicht nur ein spätes Zeugnis des intellektuellen Berlin der zwanziger Jahre, sondern auch das Dokument einer großen Freundschaft, die unabhängig von der Beziehung Benjamins zu Theodor W. Adorno bestand. Während Benjamin, neben seinen Alltagssorgen, insbesondere über jene Projekte schreibt, an denen er in den letzten Jahren seines Lebens mit Hochdruck gearbeitet hat – vor allem über den »Baudelaire« –, war es Gretel Karplus-Adorno, die mit aller Macht versuchte, Benjamin in der Welt zu halten. Sie drängte ihn zur Emigration, berichtete von Adornos Plänen und Blochs Aufenthaltsorten und hielt so die Verbindung zwischen den alten Berliner Freunden und Bekannten aufrecht. Sie half ihm durch regelmäßige Geldüberweisungen über die schlimmsten Zeiten hinweg und organisierte eine finanzielle Unterstützung aus dem anfänglich noch vom Deutschen Reich unabhängigen Saarland. In New York angekommen, versucht sie mit ihren Beschreibungen der Stadt und der Neuankömmlinge, Benjamin nach Amerika zu locken. Aber Benjamin schreibt im Frühjahr 1940: »Wir müssen sehen, unser Bestes in die Briefe zu legen; denn nichts deutet darauf hin, daß der Augenblick unseres Wiedersehens nahe ist.«

This volume proposes new insights into the uses of classical mythology by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, focusing on interweaving processes in early modern appropriations of myth. Its 11 essays show how early modern writing intertwines diverse myths and plays with variant versions of individual myths that derive from multiple classical sources, as well as medieval, Tudor and early modern retellings and translations. Works discussed include poems and plays by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and others. Essays concentrate on specific plays including The Merchant of Venice and Dido Queen of Carthage, tracing interactions between myths, chronicles, the Bible and contemporary genres. Mythological figures are considered to demonstrate how the weaving together of sources deconstructs gendered representations. New meanings emerge from these readings, which open up methodological perspectives on multi-textuality, artistic appropriation and cultural hybridity.

Walter Benjamin wurde am 15. Juli 1892 als erstes von drei Kindern in Berlin geboren und nahm sich am 26. September 1940 in Portbou/Spanien das Leben. Benjamins Familie gehörte dem assimilierten Judentum an. Nach dem Abitur 1912 studierte er Philosophie, deutsche Literatur und Psychologie in Freiburg im Breisgau, München und Berlin. 1915 lernte er den fünf Jahre jüngeren Mathematikstudenten Gershom Scholem kennen, mit dem er zeit seines Lebens befreundet blieb. 1917 heiratete Benjamin Dora Kellner und wurde Vater eines Sohnes, Stefan Rafael (1918 –1972). Die Ehe hielt 13 Jahre. Noch im Jahr der Eheschließung wechselte Benjamin nach Bern, wo er zwei Jahre später mit der Arbeit Der Begriff der Kunstkritik in der deutschen Romantik bei Richard Herbertz promovierte. 1923/24 lernte er in Frankfurt am Main Theodor W. Adorno und Siegfried Kracauer kennen. Der Versuch, sich mit der Arbeit Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels an der Frankfurter Universität zu habilitieren, scheiterte. Benjamin wurde nahegelegt, sein Gesuch zurückzuziehen, was er 1925 auch tat. Sein Interesse für den Kommunismus führte Benjamin für mehrere Monate nach Moskau. Zu Beginn der 1930er Jahre verfolgte Benjamin gemeinsam mit Bertolt Brecht publizistische Pläne und arbeitete für den Rundfunk. Die Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten zwang Benjamin, im September 1933 ins Exil zu gehen. Im französischen Nevers wurde Benjamin 1939 für drei Monate mit anderen deutschen Flüchtlingen in einem Sammellager interniert. Im September 1940 unternahm er den vergeblichen Versuch, über die Grenze nach Spanien zu gelangen. Um seiner bevorstehenden Auslieferung an Deutschland zu entgehen, nahm er sich das Leben. Theodor W. Adorno wurde am 11. September 1903 in Frankfurt am Main geboren und starb am 06. August 1969 während eines Ferienaufenthalts in Visp/Wallis an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts. Von 1921 bis 1923 studierte er in Frankfurt Philosophie, Soziologie, Psychologie und Musikwissenschaft und promovierte 1924 über Die Transzendenz des Dinglichen und Noematischen in Husserls Phänomenologie. Bereits während seiner Schulzeit schloss er Freundschaft mit Siegfried Kracauer und während seines Studiums mit Max Horkheimer und Walter Benjamin. Mit ihnen zählt Adorno zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der »Frankfurter Schule«, die aus dem Institut für Sozialforschung an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt hervorging. Sämtliche Werke Adornos sind im Suhrkamp Verlag erschienen. Gershom Scholem (1897–1982) begründete mit seinen Werken einen neuen Forschungszweig: die wissenschaftliche Erforschung der jüdischen Mystik, die ein neues Verständnis des Judentums und der jüdischen Geschichte eröffnet hat.

Er studierte, lehrte, kommentierte und übersetzte Schriften von Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, Walter Benjamin, Gershom Scholem und Paul Celan. Mosès starb 2007 in Paris. Andreas B. Kilcher, geboren 1963 in Basel, studierte Germanistik, Geschichte und Philosophie an den Universitäten Basel und München. 1996 wurde Kilcher mit einer Dissertation zur Kabbala promoviert. Seit 2008 ist er Professor für Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft an der ETH Zürich.

Oscar (Fingal O’Flahertie Wills) Wilde wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Dublin als Sohn des Arztes William Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee geboren. Er studierte klassische Literatur am Trinity College in Dublin und am Magdalen College in Oxford. 1879 ging er nach London, wo er sich bald durch seinen extravaganten Lebensstil und seine rhetorische Gewandtheit einen Namen machte. Nach Reisen in die USA, nach Kanada und Frankreich arbeitete Wilde zunächst für verschiedene Zeitungen als Lektor und Herausgeber. Seit 1884 mit Constance Lloyd verheiratet, schrieb und veröffentlichte er 1888 für seine eigenen Kinder die Märchensammlung The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In den folgenden Jahren entstanden weitere Erzählungen (wie The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891) und zahlreiche Bühnenstücke (wie The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895), die außerordentliches literarisches und gesellschaftliches Aufsehen erregten. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolges stürzte ihn dann jedoch der Skandal um das langjährige Verhältnis mit Lord Alfred Douglas in den Ruin. Wilde verlor eine Verleumdungsklage gegen Douglas Vater, der ihn der Sodomie bezichtigt hatte, und wurde selbst in einem Strafprozeß wegen Unzucht zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis in Reading floh er vor der gesellschaftlichen Ächtung unter falschem Namen nach Paris. Völlig mittellos starb er hier am 30. November 1900. Kurt Landauer (1884-1961), Präsident von Bayern München von 1913-33 und wieder ab 1947. Hedwig Lachmann, geboren 1865 in Stolp und verstorben 1918 in Krumbach, war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin.

This book examines two parallel but complementary themes: the settlement of British soldiers in the overseas or 'white' dominions, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, between 1915 and 1930. One must place soldier settlement within the larger context of imperial migration prior to 1914 in order to elicit the changes in attitude and policy which occurred after the armistice. The book discusses the changes to Anglo-dominion relations that were consequent upon the incorporation of British ex-service personnel into several overseas soldier settlement programmes, and unravels the responses of the dominion governments to such programmes. For instance, Canadians and Australians complained about the number of ex-imperials who arrived physically unfit and unable to undertake employment of any kind. The First World War made the British government to commit itself to a free passage scheme for its ex-service personnel between 1914 and 1922. The efforts of men such as L. S. Amery who attempted to establish a landed imperial yeomanry overseas is described. Anglicisation was revived in South Africa after the second Anglo-Boer War, and politicisation of the country's soldier settlement was an integral part of the larger debate on British immigration to South Africa. The Australian experience of resettling ex-servicemen on the land after World War I came at a great social and financial cost, and New Zealand's disappointing results demonstrated the nation's vulnerability to outside economic factors.
