        Federico García Lorca, geboren 1898 in Fuente Vaqueros , Granada, beginnt nach dem Studium eine Ausbildung als Musiker. 1918 veröffentlicht er sein erstes Buch Impresiones y Paisajes (Impressionen und Landschaften), 1920 folgt die Uraufführung seines ersten Theaterstücks El maleficio de la mariposa (Die Verwünschung des Schmetterlings). 1929 reist der Dichter nach New York. Es entsteht der weltberühmte Lyrikband Dichter in New York. 1930 begibt er sich nach Kuba. Ab 1931 arbeitet er für die regierenden Republikaner in Spanien. Von 1933 bis 1934 bereist er Südamerika. 1936 beginnt der Spanische Bürgerkrieg. Federico García Lorca stellt zur gleichen Zeit sein Hauptwerk Das Haus von Bernarda Alba fertig. Als er sich zu seinen Eltern nach Granada ins Einflussgebiet der Falange begibt, wird er verhaftet und am 19. August 1936 an der Friedhofsmauer von Fuente Grande erschossen. Er gilt heute als einer der wichtigsten Dramatiker und Lyriker des 20. Jahrhunderts, zu einem seiner berühmtesten Werke zählen die Zigeunerromanzen.

        This is the first study to examine the entire life cycle in the Middle Ages. Drawing on a wide range of secondary and primary material, the book explores the timing and experiences of infancy, childhood, adolescence and youth, adulthood, old age and, finally, death. It discusses attitudes towards ageing, rites of passage, age stereotypes in operation, and the means by which age was used as a form of social control, compelling individuals to work, govern, marry and pay taxes. The wide scope of the study allows contrasts and comparisons to be made across gender, social status and geographical location. It considers whether men and women experienced the ageing process in the same way, and examines the differences that can be discerned between northern and southern Europe. The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries suffered famine, warfare, plague and population collapse. This fascinating consideration of the life cycle adds a new dimension to the debate over continuity and change in a period of social and demographic upheaval.

        The rule of law, an ideology of equality and universality that justified Britain's eighteenth-century imperial claims, was the product not of abstract principles but imperial contact. As the Empire expanded, encompassing greater religious, ethnic and racial diversity, the law paradoxically contained and maintained these very differences. This book revisits six notorious incidents that occasioned vigorous debate in London's courtrooms, streets and presses: the Jewish Naturalization Act and the Elizabeth Canning case (1753-54); the Somerset Case (1771-72); the Gordon Riots (1780); the mutinies of 1797; and Union with Ireland (1800). Each of these cases adjudicated the presence of outsiders in London - from Jews and Gypsies to Africans and Catholics. The demands of these internal others to equality before the law drew them into the legal system, challenging longstanding notions of English identity and exposing contradictions in the rule of law.
