        Marianne de la nieve

        by Hadassa Ashdot

        Marianne de la nieve – Una novela psicológica por Hadassa Ashdot Hadassa Ashdot, una psicóloga del ejército escribió esta novela conmovedora acerca del poder curativo del amor y el deseo, sobre el odio ciego y la muerte que destruyen todo lo bueno, el anhelo ilimitado por la libertad como oposición a las restricciones culturales y sociales y tabúes, y acerca de una gran pérdida que cede para dar paso a la luz y la esperanza. La historia trata sobre tres combatientes israelíes - Nadav, un médico y desilusionado miembro de un kibutz; y sus amigos: David, un recluta y uno de los israelíes “socialmente rechazados”, y Osoma, el comandante de la unidad, quien viene de una pequeña aldea drusa y es un miembro de la única minoría que sirve en el ejército de Israel. Los tres estás escondidos en un bosque de cipreses en el Líbano, y Osama, se encuentra críticamente herido. Esperan por un helicóptero del ejército que venga y los rescate. Durante cuatro desesperados días mientras esperan al rescate, el bosque donde se han refugiado se convierte en una decisiva y simbólica trampa mortal en la cual sus vidas y destinos se entrelazan. Cuando el helicóptero llega, dos hombres yacen muertos, y Nadav, el protagonista, experimenta en vivo el trauma de perder amigos en la guerra. Choqueado por la muerte de sus amigos y la horrible experiencia de la guerra que ha girado su mundo al revés, Nadav deja a Marianne, la chica que ama, y se embarca en un viaje de auto purificación a los Himalayas. Pero ninguna salvación le aguarda en ese lugar. Después de que una avalancha de nieve lo deja enterrado, es rescatado magullado y maltrecho. Poco después se hunde en una oscura y profunda depresión, aguantando años de muerte viva en un abismo de desesperación. Al final, el amor, prueba ser la luz del final del túnel a través del cual Nadav hace su regreso a la vida. El amor, es la única fuerza capaz de curar una herida tan profunda que la guerra le dejó. Marianne, una voluntaria Finlandesa en el kibbutz, es la mujer que Nadav amó y abandonó, pero ella, no obstante, siempre lo acompañó durante las nieves de los Himalayas de las cuales escapa, en un intento de liberarse del dolor y la culpa por la muerte de sus amigos. Nadav redescubre a Marianne en el calmado cariño de la mediana edad, en las nieves de Finlandia, y ella es el bálsamo que finalmente le ayudan a apaciguar sus heridas de guerra. Angela Carter

        by Aidan Day

        This full scale study discusses Angela Carter's fiction in chronological order, and notes that although her themes are fairly consistent throughout her work, consistency of theme is not the same as repetition. The new angles and emphases that develop are partly from Carter's immersion in the changing intellectual debates of the times and, concurrently, arise from the reading she was doing at the different stages of her life, which stretched from the medieval through de Sade to Foucault. ;

        Journey in Trumplandia: The Rise of Populism in America

        by Tiberiu Dianu

        The book is a collection of essays about the transformation of America, which has turned from a united nation to one more divided than ever. Some pundits predict that, if things don’t change, another civil war could occur. Have we reached a point of no return? Hopefully, America is mature enough to learn from its mistakes and avoid further scars along its evolving history. "Trumplandia is a welcome addition toward understanding current events, Washington’s international policy, and the present American society; a society polarized and divided as it has not been since the Civil War.” NICHOLAS DIMA, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor and Research Associate, Nelson Institute, James Madison University, Virginia. "The book is fascinating. It provides background to, and insights into [the] current and past political history as well as offering a personal view... of the country and society. Presented in thematic form in chapters and sections, the insights offered provide a suggestive radiography...” Dr. DENNIS DELETANT, OBE, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington DC. "There has been this backsliding in... what a truly functioning rule-of-law state is, that has proper separation of co-equal powers, which, if you don’t keep working on that, you backslide. And I am even worried about that here, in the United States right now, about backsliding.” OBIE MOORE, Esq., OLM Advisors LLC, Washington DC “Indeed, Trumplandia should be a welcome addition to any scholar, student or layman’s library, especially in its international edition. If anyone loses sleep over its challenging assertions, then it will have been well worth it.” ERNESTO MORALES HIZON, Ph.D. Candidate in American and Comparative Politics at Claremont Graduate University, Member, Integrated Bar of the Philippines ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TIBERIU DIANU has practiced law in Romania (as a corporate lawyer, judge, senior counselor at the Ministry of Justice, university professor and senior legal researcher), and in the United States (as a legal expert for the judiciary). He published several books and a host of articles in law, politics, and post-communist societies. Tiberiu currently lives and works in Washington, DC.

        American film and politics from Reagan to Bush Jr

        by Philip Davies, Paul Wells

        Covers a crucial two decades in American history, when the links between Hollywood and Washington DC were at their strongest.. The period is 'book-ended' by the mighty political and cinematic figures of Reagan and Clinton.. Covers a period in which movies have become targets of political rhetoric of 'family values'.. Essays examine cinematic views of key American political institutions - the presidency and electoral process, politically significant places such as New York City and the American South, the promotion of major issues like gender, family and race. This is a subject which has gained new significance in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington DC, which have changed both the political climate, and the priorities of the movie industry. ;

        The Legacy of John Polidori

        The Romantic Vampire and its Progeny

        by Sam George, Bill Hughes

        John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's story transformed the shambling, mindless monster of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive aristocrat that stalked London society rather than being confined to the hinterlands of Eastern Europe. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction. They emphasise the background of colonial revolution and racial oppression in the early nineteenth century and the cultural shifts of postmodernity.

        Christian intellectuals in Britain and the Crisis of Europe, 1937–49

        by John Carter Wood

        In the 1930s and 1940s - amid the crises of totalitarianism, war and a perceived cultural collapse in the democratic West - a high-profile group of mostly Christian intellectuals met to map out 'middle ways' through the 'age of extremes'. Led by the missionary and ecumenist Joseph H. Oldham, the group included prominent writers, thinkers and activists such as T. S. Eliot, John Middleton Murry, Karl Mannheim, John Baillie, Alec Vidler, H. A. Hodges, Christopher Dawson, Kathleen Bliss and Michael Polanyi. The 'Oldham group' saw faith as a uniquely powerful resource for social and cultural renewal, and it represents a fascinating case study of efforts to renew freedom in a dramatic confrontation with totalitarianism. The group's story will appeal to those interested in the cultural history of the Second World War and the issue of applying faith to the 'modern' social order.

        Das Stammbuch der Marianne von Willemer

        by Kurt Andreae, Gerhard Kölsch, Marianne Küffner

        Mit den Suleika-Gedichten, die Goethe unter seinem Namen im West-östlichen Divan veröffentlichte, hat Marianne von Willemer (1784 bis 1860) Literaturgeschichte geschrieben. Aus ihrem Besitz stammt das hier in Faksimilequalität reproduzierte Stammbuch, das Unikate aus den Jahren 1810 bis 1855 enthält und das einen zauberhaften Einblick in die Bürgerkultur des 19. Jahrhunderts gewährt. Unter »Stammbuch« verstand man das, was man heute vielleicht als ein Gästebuch oder ein Poesiealbum bezeichnen würde. Das Exemplar der Marianne von Willemer ist überdies nicht gebunden, sondern hat die Gestalt einer Schatulle in Buchform, in die die 56 Erinnerungsstücke einzeln eingelegt sind. Es enthält Gedichte, Widmungsblätter und Bilder in verschiedenen Techniken – so auch entsprechend den heutigen Postkarten als Reiseandenken verkaufte Gouachen oder die aus einem Ahornblatt herausgeschabte Silhouette Napoleons zu Pferde. Jedes dieser Stücke wird farbig abgebildet, beschrieben und kommentiert; die Texte werden transkribiert. Die Geschichten, die sich an die einzelnen Stücke knüpfen, werden von Kurt Andreae, einem Nachfahren Johann Jakob von Willemers, mit viel Anteilnahme erzählt – so etwa jene zu einem Gedicht Herman Grimms, dem Marianne, das »Großmütterchen«, 1850 ihre Autorschaft der Divan-Gedichte unter der Maßgabe anvertraute, daß er ihr Geheimnis bis nach ihrem Tod bewahren würde. Mit dieser Faksimileedition des Stammbuchs der Marianne von Willemer wird ein kulturhistorisches Dokument ersten Ranges zugänglich gemacht. Vor dem Betrachter und Leser entsteht ein Panorama des gesellschaftlichen Lebens und des Tourismus in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, aber auch das Porträt einer auch über ihre Begegnung mit Goethe hinaus faszinierenden Frau, der Suleika aus Goethes West-östlichem Divan, die bis ins hohe Alter am gesellschaftlichen Leben als Gastgeberin und Künstlerin teilnahm.

        Authorship and authority: the writings of James VI and I

        by Jane Rickard

        James VI of Scotland and I of England participated in the burgeoning literary culture of the Renaissance, not only as a monarch and patron, but as an author in his own right, publishing extensively in a number of different genres over four decades. As the first monograph devoted to James as an author, this book offers a fresh perspective on his reigns in Scotland and England, and also on the inter-relationship of authorship and authority, literature and politics in the Renaissance. Beginning with the poetry he wrote in Scotland in the 1580s, it moves through a wide range of his writings, including scriptural exegeses, political, social and theological treatises and printed speeches, concluding with his manuscript poetry of the early 1620s. The book combines extensive primary research into the preparation, material form and circulation of these varied writings, with theoretically informed consideration of the relationship between authors, texts and readers. The discussion thus explores James's responses to, and interventions in, a range of literary, political and religious debates, and reveals the development of his aims and concerns as an author.

        4 saints in 3 acts

        A snapshot of the American avant-garde in the 1930s

        by Patricia Allmer, John Sears

        Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

        'Anagrams of desire'

        Angela Carter's writing for radio, film and television

        by Charlotte Crofts

        Angela Carter is best known for her novels, short fiction and journalism, but she also produced a substantial body of writing for media other than the printed page, including five radio plays, two film adaptations, an original television documentary and a number of unrealised scripts for stage and screen. Despite increasing academic interest in Carter's work, these dramatic writings have largely been ignored. In this book, Charlotte Crofts redresses this lack of critical attention by examining Carter's dramatic writings together for the first time (including two unpublished works), giving them a more central position in the Carter canon. Divided into three sections on radio, film and television, the book's interdisciplinary approach is underpinned by reference to exclusive interviews with the directors and producers with whom Carter collaborated, giving a unique insight into processes of adaptation and the technologies of media production. The author demonstrates how, far from being an aberration from her real vocation as a writer of fiction, Carter's writing for radio, film and television is an extension of her self-professed demythologising practice. ;
