Cinema - Italy
by Stefania Parigi, Des O'Rawe
A journey to the Italian cinema that overturns established views and opens up new perspectives and interpretations. Its itinerary is organized in four stages. The first is an analysis of the theories of Cesare Zavattini on neorealism which overturns widely accepted positions both on Zavattini and on neorealism. The second confronts a key film of the post-war Italian cinema, Roberto Rossellini's Paisà, by examining the nature of its realism. The third is dedicated to Luchino Visconti: to questions of the use of language exemplified in his La terra trema, the use of settings, costume and light as agents of meaning in his Il Gattopardo and Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa. The final voyage of the film is to the physical and symbolic construction of heaven and earth in the work of Pasolini. Particular attention is given to the representation of the body in his last four films: the grotesque and mythical bodies in popular tradition in his Trilogia di vita and the tortured bodies destroyed by the mass media in Salò. ;

What’s for supper?
by Stefania Arcieri
What’s for supper? subtly aims attention at taste differences, food intolerances and taboos. Tonight, Léon and his friends are having dinner together in the garden. The only thing left to do is to plan the menu and this is where things get complicated : everyone has different tastes and they will (or not!) have to compromise… • The collection «Paupiette» is a fun way to educate small children about taste, food diversity and the seasonality of fruits and vegetables • Stefania’s pencils, their liveliness and bright colors are enough to excite our taste buds!

Enclosing Water
Nature and Political Economy in a Mediterranean Valley, 1796-1916
by Stefania Barca
Enclosing Water is an environmental history of the Industrial Revolution, as inscribed on the Liri valley in Italy’s Central Apennines. Amid forces of revolution and empire, and Enlightenment discourses of ‘improvement’ and political economy, the Liri’s natural wealth - water-power - generated sweeping changes in its landscape and working and living environments. This book tells the story of how defining water as property - both materially and discursively - led to the emergence of an industrial riverscape, and of a concomitant new ecological consciousness; to heightened environmental risks and awareness of those risks. A dramatic century in the Liri’s socio-environmental history, with its cast of new industrial bourgeoisie, engineers and civil servants, illuminates how material developments and ideological currents completely reshaped the relationship between society and nature at the periphery of 19th century Europe. By integrating Political Economy into the narrative of European environmental history, this pioneering book offers a critical new view of discourses of water disorder and environmental politics in the Mediterranean region.

Circus-motricity Manual
by Manlio Casali, Stefania Sala
"Circus-motricity manual" is in effect a pioneering text, not so much because it invents something new, but rather because, for the first time, it engages in a double attempt: to contribute to the development and dissemination of circus arts as a valid playful tool / educational and design a very practical and concrete form of what is spoken of, to give pragmatism to myths and dreams. And it is a manual that talks about motricity, that is the application of circus arts to a playful and experiential approach that can have important reflections on children. Not because it will make them circus artists. Not superheroes. Not child prodigies. But because it will be a beautiful experience for them, a thing made and lived with pleasure, with themselves, with others, with unexpected gratifications and the development of sociality. A game that improves their motor skills.

Saint Michael The Archangel
by Immacolata Aulisa, Claudio Azzara, Gioia Bertelli, Pierre Bouet, Ada Campione, Franco Cardini, Manuel Castiñeiras, Gerardo Cioffari, Alessandro di Muro, Klaus Herbers, Renzo Infante, Gábor Klaniczay, Giorgio Otranto, Francesco Panarelli, Giuseppe Sergi, André Vauchez, Catherine Vincent
From the Hebrew name meaning “Who Is Like God?”, Michael is one of the angels–together with Raphael (“God Heals”) and Gabriel (“God Is My Strength”)–whose names are mentioned in the Holy Scripture. Since the first centuries of Christianity, there has been a wide diffusion of his worship in Europe and in the East through a multitude of sanctuaries and chapels, mostly nestled in high places, related to caves and water. An astonishing feature of this spread is a mysterious straight line crossing the European continent from North-West to South-East from Ireland to Asia Minor, and it is perfectly aligned with the sunset on the day of Summer Solstice. Along this line are seven sanctuaries dedicated to Michael, three of which have been significantly important over the centuries: Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, the Sacra di San Michele in val di Susa and the Sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo on Mount Gargano, in Puglia. Three extraordinary high places that are all the same distance one from the other and which have always been a constant pilgrimage destination. Another aspect is the connection Saint Michael had with the Longobards, who migrated across Europe between the second and the sixth century until they reached Italy where they settled. This made Michael the first truly “European” Saint, attracting believers from all over the continent. With the contribution of some of the most important historians and medievalists from different European countries, this book depicts the presence of Saint Michael in Europe, starting with the diffusion of his devotion, especially during the Middle Ages, and extending to an analysis of the iconography of the Saint through the many architectural and artistic testimonies to be found throughout Europe. Thanks to its influential contributions and to the variety of both historical and iconographic topics, combined with the spectacular nature of the numerous images of places and artistic testimonies, this book is a unique journey through Europe between art and faith.

by Ilaria Gaspari
Gaia is beautiful, self-centred and unhappy. One day in November she returns to the city where she studied, after an absence of ten years. Nothing seems to have changed in Pisa, but everything has. Gaia meets up again with her old friends and the love of her university days, but now they are divided by the years they spent apart and the loss of a fellow student, Virginia, who died in obscure circumstances. The investigation into the mysterious suicide winds its way through the streets of the city and the colleges of the Scuola Normale, amidst buried memories and obsessions that come to light.
