Freiheit und Demokratie, so der Investor Peter Thiel 2009, seien nicht länger kompatibel. Wer die Freiheit liebe, müsse daher versuchen, der Politik in all ihren Formen zu entkommen. Zuflucht suchen könnten Libertäre im Cyberspace, im Weltraum und auf dem offenen Meer. Das mag verblasen klingen, steht aber in einer jahrzehntealten Tradition marktradikaler Ideen: Denker wie Milton Friedman begeisterten sich für das noch unter britischer Oberhoheit stehende Hongkong; Margaret Thatcher träumte von einem Singapur an der Themse. In seinem Buch Globalisten hatte sich Quinn Slobodian mit Versuchen befasst, ökonomische Fragen der demokratischen Willensbildung zu entziehen, etwa durch ihre Übertragung an internationale Organisationen. In Kapitalismus ohne Demokratie geht es nun um eine andere Lösung für das von Thiel beklagte Problem: die Zerschlagung der Welt in Steueroasen, Privatstädte oder Mikronationen. Quinn Slobodian nimmt uns mit auf eine faszinierende Reise durch die Welt der neoliberalen Utopien. Sie führt nach Dubai und Liechtenstein, ins vom Bürgerkrieg zerrüttete Somalia und zu Elon Musks texanischem Weltraumbahnhof. Und sie weitet den Blick auf eine mögliche Zukunft, die uns Sorgen machen sollte.

Kaum ein Konzept im Werk Jean-Jacques Rousseaus trägt so großes Gewicht und ist so komplex angelegt wie das der »amour-propre« (Eigenliebe). Frederick Neuhouser hat die erste umfassende Studie zu diesem Begriff vorgelegt und enthüllt auf eindrucksvolle Weise dessen doppeltes Gesicht: Im Gegensatz zur »amour de soi« (Selbstliebe), die den Menschen im Naturzustand kennzeichnet, kommt die »amour-propre« erst im Gesellschaftszustand zum Vorschein. This book is our principal source for the history of the Kingdom of Sicily in the troubled years between the death of its founder, King Roger, in February 1154 and the spring of 1169. It covers the reign of Roger's son, King William I, known to later centuries as 'the Bad', and the minority of the latter's son, William II 'the Good'. The book illustrates the revival of classical learning during the twelfth-century renaissance. It presents a vivid and compelling picture of royal tyranny, rebellion and factional dispute at court. Sicily had historically been ruled by tyrants, and that the rule of the new Norman kings could be seen, for a variety of reasons, as a revival of that classical tyranny. A more balanced view of Sicilian history of the period 1153-1169 has been provided as an appendix to the translation in the section of the contemporary world chronicle ascribed to Archbishop Romuald II of Salerno, who died in April 1181. In particular the chronicle of Romuald enables us to see how the papal schism of 1159 and the simultaneous dispute between the German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the north Italian cities affected the destiny of the kingdom of Sicily. In contrast to the shadowy figure of Hugo Falcandus, the putative author of the principal narrative of mid-twelfth-century Sicilian history, Romuald II, Archbishop of Salerno 1153-1181, is well-documented.

Charles Darwin war ein fleißiger Briefeschreiber. Er hat im Laufe seines Lebens mit über 2000 Personen korrespondiert und mehr als 7500 Briefe verfaßt. Die von Frederick Burckhardt vorgelegte repräsentative Edition versammelt Briefe aus den Jahren 1822 bis 1859. Sie setzt ein mit einigen erst jüngst entdeckten Briefen, die Darwin als 12jähriger schrieb und die hier erstmals veröffentlicht werden, und begleitet die weiteren Stationen seines Lebens, die Universitätszeit in Edinburg und Cambridge, die fünfjährige Weltumsegelung auf der Beagle bis zur Publikation der Entstehung der Arten. Anders als das sorgfältig überarbeitete Tagebuch der Beagle-Reise oder die wissenschaftlichen Werke zeigen die oft begeisterten Schilderungen von Erlebnissen und Entdeckungen Darwin als einen Menschen von besonderer Spontaneität. Die Briefe – lebendig und anschaulich geschrieben – eröffnen einen faszinierenden Blick nicht nur auf den Forscher und seine wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse, sondern auch den Privatmann, den Sohn, Bruder, Familienvater und Ehemann. Ein ausführlicher Kommentar und eine Übersicht über die Briefpartner ordnen die Briefe in ihren historischen Kontext ein. Das Vorwort von Stephen Jay Gould führt in Leben und Werk Charles Darwins ein.
