        Pretty Tricky

        The Sneaky Ways Plants Survive

        by Etta Kaner, Ashley Barron

        Have you ever thought of plants as tricky? Probably not. But in this nonfiction book, readers are introduced to the tricky techniques some plants use to defend themselves, reproduce, or acquire food. From the copycat Boquila vine that changes shape to match its host plant, to the pungent carrion flower that lures pollinating flies with the scent of rotten meat, plants across the globe have adapted to survive all kinds of threatening fauna. Each amazing plant adaptation is described through fact bubbles and easy-to-grasp blocks of text. End matter includes a list of sources for kids to explore, a glossary defining scientific terms, and an index. Brought to life with eye-popping cut-paper collage illustrations, this book is a garden of knowledge that will leave kids with a better understanding of how living things adapt to their environments.

        An Unordinary Death

        …The life of a Palestinian

        by Sabra, K.C.

        Most children come into life, initially at least, with a degree of trust that they are going to be treated fairly. The way a social order kills that sense of trust is often cumulative, overt and consciously executed. Within such a situation it is likely that, once becoming a man (or woman), he will not develop an instinctive inhibition about killing his co-species. One will commit such an act upon a group or individual with whom he has no sense of identity and with whom there is no empathy or conscious feeling of guilt relating to their destruction. It is an uncomfortable revelation and a hideous result of social deconstruction. Such is the case Jenna Hayat, a young woman Palestinian woman. A limping soul navigating through a dismal passage of existence, Israeli occupation is a septic wound in her heart that can't be healed, and being Palestinian is like being punished for a crime she hasn't committed. She is not hell-bent revolutionary; she is not a feminist or a nationalist, and she is not a psychopath with a death wish. She is just an ordinary young woman, trapped amid savaged inequalities. Jenna once remarked to a close friend that life was so long when you are not happy. Hers was very unhappy. Her mother succumbs to cancer, she is not permitted to marry the only man she ever loved, and she feels herself alone in is world in which there is no mercy. A martyrdom mission makes perfect sense in a life such as hers and longevity is inconsequential. Jenna makes a final and far-reaching decision, which is to look for her mercy from God instead of mere mortal men.

        Open Doors

        Out of Print

        by Jenna Hilary Sinclair

        As the twenty-second century dawns, the Lindotian war begins, seeding chaos throughout the galaxy.  Casualties of the conflict, Dave Curtis and his fellow students are taken prisoner on an interstellar slave ship, where fear causes many of them to turn on one another.  Dave’s youth and beauty catch the slaver captain’s eye, and he is removed from the hold for special training and sexual indoctrination.  Dave panics at being separated from his older friend Beck, but when he meets his instructor, his life is changed forever.Jenna Hilary Sinclair has done an excellent job of setting up a unique world, with enough information that the reader doesn't feel 'lost in space', but not so much information that it obscures the story. Her characters are clearly drawn and believable. Open Doors is a quick fun read, with lovely hot slave sex between Max and Dave and a twist in the ending that I didn't expect. I recommend it.  4 Stars from Rainbow Reviews ;

        Gifts of the Season

        Out of Print

        by Jenna Hilary Sinclair

        Elaine and her son Danny are stranded when their car runs off the road during a snowstorm. Their rescuer, Mike, is one half of the openly gay couple that owns a ranch nearby. Fascinated each for their own reason, Elaine and Danny learn about their neighbors and discover that friendship can be one of the most cherished gifts. This is a fascinating story in all respects, one that I greatly enjoyed.  As soon as I started reading I was immersed in the story and wasn't let go until the very last word. - Enigmatically Emily ;
