A Reflection on their Role in Development

David Harrison has contributed to the academic study of tourism over the last thirty years. This book brings together a collection of his published material that reflects the role played by tourism in 'development,' both in societies emerging from Western colonialism and in societies previously part of the Soviet system. The overarching theme looks at how promoted as a tool for development, tourism can lead to conflict between competing elites, but can also empower groups previously subject to constraint by traditional authorities. Tradition is intensely manipulatable and always reflects power relations. Such pressure on tradition is but one aspect of tourism's wider social impacts, which include changes in economic and social structure which, for many, constitute social problems which need to be addressed. At the same time, 'sustainability,' though apparently a worthy aim, can be a problematic concept, especially when applied to 'traditional' cultures, and may conflict with such ideals as egalitarianism.

Erica Pedretti emigrierte in die USA und verbrachte zwei Jahre in New York. 1952 kehrte sie jedoch in die Schweiz zurück und heiratete den Künstler Gian Pedretti aus der Engadiner Künstlerfamilie Pedretti. Seit den 70er Jahren arbeitet sie erfolgreich als bildende Künstlerin. Auslandsaufenthalte führten sie 1971 nach London und 1988 als Gast an das Istituto Svizzero in Rom. 1989 war sie Writer in Residence an der Washington University in St. Louis. 1994 hatte sie den Swiss Chair an der City University of New York inne. Seit 1988 war sie korrespondierendes Mitglied in der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung in Darmstadt. Erica Pedretti lebte mit ihrem Mann in La Neuveville am Bieler See. Sie zählt zu den herausragenden Persönlichkeiten der zeitgenössischen Schweizer Literatur. Am 14. Juli 2022 verstarb sie im Alter von 92 Jahren.

Postmodern, postcolonial and post-truth are broadly used terms. But where do they come from? When and why did the habit of interpreting the world in post-terms emerge? And who exactly were the 'post boys' responsible for this? Post-everything examines why post-Christian, post-industrial and post-bourgeois were terms that resonated, not only among academics, but also in the popular press. It delves into the historical roots of postmodern and poststructuralist, while also subjecting more recent post-constructions (posthumanist, postfeminist) to critical scrutiny. This study is the first to offer a comprehensive history of post-concepts. In tracing how these concepts found their way into a broad range of genres and disciplines, Post-everything contributes to a rapprochement between the history of the humanities and the history of the social sciences.
