Bei dem hier vorliegenden Band handelt es sich um eine von Eva Gillies gekürzte und eingeleitete Ausgabe des zuerst 1937 erschienenen großen Werkes »Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande«, das den seither unbestrittenen Ruf des bedeutenden englischen Sozialanthropologen E.E. Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973) begründet hat. Diese Monographie gehört zu den umfangreichen Publikationen Evans-Pritchards, die eine Frucht der intensiven ethnologischen Felduntersuchungen darstellen, die er in den zwanziger und dreißiger Jahren im damals Anglo-Ägyptischen Sudan unternommen hat und in deren Verlauf er neben den Zande u. a. auch die Gesellschaften der Nuer, der Anuak und der Luo studiert hat. Evans-Pritchards Arbeit weist die innere Logik des Glaubens an Hexerei und Magie auf, eines Glaubens, der in der Vorstellungswelt und der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit vieler afrikanischer Gesellschaften einen festen Platz hat. »Hexerei, Orakel und Magie bei den Zande« ist bahnbrechend für den Versuch geworden, fremde Denksysteme auf ihre eigene Logik hin zu untersuchen und ihre Grundvoraussetzungen explizit zu machen. Seit den fünfziger Jahren beeinflußt Evans-Pritchards Werk neben Ethnologen zunehmend auch Philosophen, Soziologen und Theologen. In ihrem Vorwort umreißt Eva Gillies die heutige Bedeutung des Buchs von Evans-Pritchard und beschreibt die soziale und politische Organisation der Zande um 1930, um dem Leser die Einordnung in den historischen Kontext zu ermöglichen.

These were located above all in the traditions of the German labour movement and the history of the anti-Nazi resistance. The GDR was not imposed on the East German people at the point of Russian bayonets; it emerged out of the interaction between Soviet occupation policy and the politics of the East German working class. The making of the GDR 1945-53 also tells a powerful human story, in which the aspirations of antifascists and Socialists were manipulated and ultimately betrayed by Stalinism. Based on extensive research, this book will be of interest to those concerned with the division of Germany, the nature of the GDR, and the whole trajectory of post-war German politics. ;

A social history of central European politics, 1945–56

This book covers various aspects of the social history of politics on both sides of the Iron Curtain in the period 1945 to 1956. The contributors come from a range of countries (Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and the United Kingdom) and comprise a mixture of established historians and younger scholars engaged in pioneering research. The individual chapters are organised into four sections dealing with workers, ethnic and linguistic minorities, youth, and women. In order to enhance the comparative character of the volume, the four chapters contained in each section consider the position of these social groups in, respectively, West Germany, East Germany, Austria, and either Czechoslovakia or Hungary. Major themes include the absence of popular revolutions in the aftermath of World War Two, the re-imposition of social control by post-war elites, the attempt to restore pre-war gender relations, and the failure of Communist parties to win popular support. The chosen time-frame saw most of the decisive developments which set the pattern for the remaining Cold War period and is therefore of key importance for any student of this topic. ;

Von ihm liegt im Suhrkamp Verlag außerdem vor: Die Gabe. Form und Funktion des Austauschs in archaischen Gesellschaften (stw 743) Eva Moldenhauer, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main geboren, war seit 1964 als Übersetzerin tätig. Sie übersetzte Literatur und wissenschaftliche Schriften französischsprachiger Autoren ins Deutsche, u.a. von Claude Simon, Jorge Semprún, Marcel Mauss, Mircea Eliade, Gilles Deleuze und Lévi-Strauss. Sie wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Helmut-M.-Braem-Übersetzerpreis und dem Paul-Celan-Preis. Eva Moldenhauer verstarb am 22. April 2019.

"We had much rather be all alone in the right than with the whole world in the wrong.” So wrote Jeremiah Hacker in 1862. He was the main writer and editor of The Pleasure Boat, which may have the distinction of being Portland, Maine’s most controversial newspaper. Inspired by his Quaker background, Hacker worked to end slavery, poverty, and inequality of women through his writing. He spoke out against prisons, advocating instead for reform and education. He broke with all forms of organized religion and urged people to leave their churches and find moral direction from within. He promoted no political party, believing people would be better off without government. He was in favor of land for all. The most controversial of Hacker’s radical ideas, however—and the one that lost him the most readers—was his advocacy for peace as the country headed toward Civil War. Hacker’s life spanned the nineteenth century (1801-1895). His work was widely read and he himself was well-known in his lifetime. But both he and his ideas have largely been forgotten—until now. This book explores the life and writings of Jeremiah Hacker, returning him to his rightful place in history, and showing how his words were an important part of what helped to forge that history.
