Three decades ago, the hypermobility of tourists from the days before the global pandemic was truly unthinkable in Eastern Europe. This book critically examines how and why Eastern enlargement has impacted on EU human rights policy. By drawing on the EU's intervention in human rights provision in Romania before 2007, it is demonstrated that the feedback effects of this intervention have led to the emergence of an EU child rights policy. Eastern enlargement has also raised the profile of Roma protection, international adoptions and mental health at the EU level. The problems caused by the proposed enlargement of the EU to include the associated Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) are discussed. The two main agricultural issues raised by this are the relative competitiveness of CEEC agriculture and its potential to cause difficulties for the Common Agricultural Policy. In most countries of the Former Soviet Union (FSU) and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), cereals production constitutes a major proportion of agricultural sector output, and expenditure on cereals products represents a significant component of total household expenditure. Perhaps for these very reasons, cereals sector reform in many countries has tended to lag behind that of other sectors within agriculture, and of the liberalisation process in general. This lack of reform has prevented the countries of the region from realising the full productive potential of their cereals industries and threatens to undermine food security.This book is based on a workshop on cereals sector reform and food security in the Newly Independent States (NIS) and CEE, held in Kiev, Ukraine, in December 1995. It addresses the general issues involved in the reform process and also considers the progress made, and constraints encountered, in specific countries in the region. Earlier chapters consider general features of the reforms, and the later chapters are concerned with country-specific issues. The workshop was held as part of a broader initiative by ICERC to create a framework for cooperation on the critical issues of economic transition in this region: to revitalise trade, to stimulate investment, to increase food production, to develop and conserve resources, and to take effective action on environmental problems.

Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced. Drawing on the everyday experiences of 43 British-Bangladeshi Muslims living in East London, this book explores stories of migration and belonging vis-à-vis dress and language. In narrating those stories, the book is framed within the broader socio-political conversations happening regarding Muslims in Britain and their 'place' in this society. Recent work on Muslims focuses on their religious identity and its formation, not paying attention to the role of dress and language. With the former, much of it tends to, obsessively, focus on Muslim women only. This book, alternatively, explores religious identity formation in addition to examining the British-Bangladeshi Muslim community's relationship with their ethnic identity vis-à-vis dress and language. As such, the analysis provides a rich, bottom-up analysis of the community, and readers will be able to understand a community holistically, away from the over-sensationalised community within broader socio-political context.
