        The agency phenomenon in the European Union

        Emergence, institutionalisation and everyday decision-making

        by Madalina Busuioc, Dimitris Papadimitriou, Martijn Groenleer, Simon Bulmer, Jarle Trondal, Andrew Geddes, Peter Humphreys

        This volume offers a comprehensive analysis of the agency phenomenon in the European Union. It takes stock of the emergence and development of EU agencies, providing insight into the characteristics as well as the consequences of the ongoing EU agencification process. The volume traces the varied roots of and routes to agency emergence and institutionalisation. It also analyses everyday decision-making processes within EU-level agencies, notably the management of such agencies, their role in the creation of network structures in European executive governance and in the implementation of EU legislation at the member state level, and the varied sources of agency accountability. The ambition of this volume is to offer an even-handed assessment and explanation of agency creation, design, and evolution at the EU level. The volume is targeted to academics, post-graduate students and practitioners. Chapter authors include Deirdre Curtin, Renaud Dehousse, Morten Egeberg and Thomas Gehring. ;

        Was bleibt, wenn die Schreie enden?

        Briefe 1966-1989

        by Samuel Beckett, Chris Hirte

        Dieser Band beschließt die große vierbändige Ausgabe der Briefe Samuel Becketts. Er enthält Briefe aus den letzten 23 Lebensjahren, in denen sich das Werk des seit Warten auf Godot (1953) berühmten Autors weiter entfaltet. 1969 erhält Beckett den Nobelpreis – und flieht nach Tunesien. Aus der Lawine der Glückwünsche und sonstigen Zuschriften kann er, der gewissenhafte Korrespondent, sich kaum befreien. Immer wieder, zum Beispiel zu den Geburtstagen, wird er in dieser Weise verschütt gehen, sich beklagen und aufs Neue berappeln. Denn weiterhin drängen Texte ans Licht. Zahlreiche Theater- und Fernsehstücke entstehen ebenso wie Prosa, so die Trilogie Gesellschaft, Schlecht gesehen schlecht gesagt und Aufs Schlimmste zu. Beckett inszeniert die eigenen Stücke in Paris, London und häufig in Berlin – sowie Fernsehstücke in Stuttgart. Dauernd ist er mit Selbstübersetzungen (französischer Texte ins Englische, englischer Texte ins Französische) beschäftigt. Er bekommt es – unwillig und dann doch kooperativ – mit BiographInnen zu tun, Deirdre Bair, dann James Knowlson (Samuel Beckett. Eine Biographie, 2001). Urlaube, die er mit seiner Frau auf Malta, an der nordafrikanischen Küste oder in den Alpen verbringt, sind auch Fluchten vor dem Pariser und internationalen Kulturbetrieb, den er haßt und in dem er doch unermüdlich mitwirkt. Zuletzt lassen die Kräfte nach. Am 22. Dezember 1989 stirbt Samuel Beckett im Pflegeheim. Unweigerlich pointiert und trocken, immer noch in diesem unnachahmlichen Ton, bescheidet eines seiner letzten Schreiben den Briefpartner: „Mein Hirn ist Matsch, kann nicht helfen. Bonne continuation.“

        Perfectly Preventable Deaths

        by Deirdre Sullivan

        An isolated town. Generations of dark secrets . . . Fifteen-year-old twins Madeline and Catlin move to a new life in Ballyfrann, a strange isolated Irish town, a place where the earth is littered with small corpses and unspoken truths. A place where, for the last sixty years, teenage girls have gone missing in the surrounding mountains. As distance grows between the twins – as Catlin falls in love, and Madeline begins to understand her own nascent witchcraft – Madeline discovers that Ballyfrann is a place full of predators. When Catlin falls into the gravest danger of all, Madeline must ask herself who she really is, and who she wants to be – or rather, who she might have to become to save her sister. Dark and savage, this is a highly lyrical coming-of-age thriller, about the bond between twins, witchcraft and the sacrifices we make for those we care about the most. For fans of Frances Hardinge and Laure Eve.

        Leave Me Alone and I'll Make You Rich

        How the Bourgeois Deal Enriched the World

        by McCloskey, Carden

        Deirdre McCloskey is one of our best-known economic historians and an advocate for free market capitalism and the power of ideas in shaping our economy. Leave Me Alone and I'll Make You Rich: The Bourgeois Deal collects the provocative arguments put forward by McCloskey in a trilogy published by the Press that mounts a vigorous defense of capitalism as told through the story of the rise of the bourgeois. Co-authored with Art Carden, Leave Me Alone and I’ll Make You Rich is a libertarian take on economic development and the role of government and, indeed, tells a different story of market expansion and democratization than that of Thomas Piketty or Joseph Stiglitz. Carden and McCloskey succinctly demonstrate the power of new technologies and new ideas about democracy, liberty, and dignity for all people in fueling economic growth and prosperity in modernizing Europe.
