1948 wird das Davidschild, der Davidstern zum Symbol des neugegründeten Staates Israel, zum Emblem der israelischen Nationalflagge. Im selben Jahr zeichnet Gershom Scholem in einem auf hebräisch verfaßten Essay die erstaunliche Karriere dieses Symbols in der jüdischen Überlieferung nach. 1963 veröffentlicht er in dem Band Judaica eine überarbeitete Fassung seines Essays auf deutsch. Noch kurz vor seinem Tod im Februar 1982 plante der große jüdische Gelehrte eine erweiterte hebräische Fassung. Der vorliegende Band greift auf das bislang unveröffentlichte Material zum Davidschild in Gershom Scholems Nachlaß zurück und bietet eine grundlegende, erstmals auch um Quellennachweise ergänzte Neuedition dieser bedeutenden Studie.
