Ludwig Wittgenstein schrieb über die Sprache, sie gleiche einer "alten Stadt", einem "Gewinkel von Gäßchen und Plätzen". In diesem linguistischen Raum bewegen wir uns ganz selbstverständlich, während unmerklich neue Vororte entstehen und alte Viertel renoviert oder abgerissen werden. Um die Historizität der Sprache, die Geburt und das Sterben von Lauten, Worten und Idiomen geht es in Daniel Heller-Roazens einundzwanzig funkelnden Essays. Sprachtheoretische Betrachtungen Benjamins, Jakobsons und Freuds schließt er kurz mit poetischen Anekdoten aus der Geschichte der Linguistik: über die Nymphe Io, die – von Jupiter in eine Kuh verwandelt – ihren Namen mit dem Huf in den Sand schrieb, den Turm von Babel und das Geplapper der Kinder (der Begriff Echolalie bezeichnet das Wiederholen vorgesagter Phrasen), Menschen ohne Zunge, einen Schizophrenen, der systematisch seine Muttersprache vergaß, das Verschwinden des h, dem Karl Kraus seine Elegie auf den Tod eines Lautes widmete, und über "tote" Idiome, die keine Sprachen mehr sind, "sondern nur noch Tinte und Papier".

In solidarity, under suspicion is the successor volume to Against the grain (2014) and Waiting for the revolution (2017), complementing analysis of the far left in Britain from 1956 until the present. In addition to new scholarship on hitherto under-researched groups and movements, the volume explores recent findings from the Undercover Policing Inquiry and provides historical context for developments in the British left during and after 'Corbynism'. Chapters consider the far left's relationship to the state as well as to the Labour Party, and highlights attempts by far-left groups and activists both to intervene internationally and to transform themselves. With a range of different perspectives - activist and academic - In solidarity, under suspicion draws out the distinct ways that different far left groups and movements have responded to problems which remain salient today.

The Industrial Revolution produced injury, illness and disablement on a large scale and nowhere was this more visible than in coalmining. Disability in the Industrial Revolution sheds new light on the human cost of industrialisation by examining the lives and experiences of those disabled in an industry that was vital to Britain's economic growth. Although it is commonly assumed that industrialisation led to increasing marginalisation of people with impairments from the workforce, disabled mineworkers were expected to return to work wherever possible, and new medical services developed to assist in this endeavour. This book explores the working lives of disabled miners and analyses the medical, welfare and community responses to disablement in the coalfields. It shows how disability affected industrial relations and shaped the class identity of mineworkers. The book will appeal to students and academics interested in disability, occupational health and social history.

Waiting for the revolution is a volume of essays examining the diverse currents of British left-wing politics from 1956 to the present day. The book is designed to complement the previous volume, Against the grain: The far left in Britain from 1956, bringing together young and established academics and writers to discuss the realignments and fissures that maintain leftist politics into the twenty-first century. The two books endeavour to historicise the British left, detailing but also seeking to understand the diverse currents that comprise 'the far left'. Their objective is less to intervene in ongoing issues relevant to the left and politics more generally, than to uncover and explore the traditions and issues that have preoccupied leftist groups, activists and struggles. To this end, the book will appeal to scholars and anyone interested in British politics.

This book is the first full-length study of the director's work, from his early social-realist films set in the Basque Country to his later forays into the genres of the war and horror. It offers an in-depth film-by-film analysis while simultaneously exploring the director's position in the contemporary Spanish context, the tension between directors and critics and the question of national cinema in an area - the Basque Country - of heightened national and regional sensitivities.
