In The Making of Chinese-Sinophone Literatures as World Literature, Kuei-fen Chiu and Yingjin Zhang aim to bridge the distance between the scholarship of world literature and that of Chinese and Sinophone literary studies. This edited volume advances research on world literature by bringing in new developments in Chinese/Sinophone literatures and adds a much-needed new global perspective on Chinese literary studies beyond the traditional national literature paradigm and its recent critique by Sinophone studies. In addition to a critical mapping of the domains of world literature, Sinophone literature, and world literature in Chinese to delineate the nuanced differences of these three disciplines, the book addresses the issues of translation, genre, and the impact of media and technology on our understanding of “literature” and “literary prestige.” It also provides critical studies of the complicated ways in which Chinese and Sinophone literatures are translated, received, and reinvested across various genres and media, and thus circulate as world literature. The climax of the Game of Life came from the school Rube Goldberg challenge in which each grade had to join as a team to build their own whacky, madcap contraption. Would Josh and Alex be able to manage to get the two bullies in the class to work within the team? Patiently, with impish humour, the Game Master guides them through the different levels to a final intriguing twist.

In modern India, reforming individual reproduction, through changing marriage practices or the introduction of birth control, became a means to shape the life of the population as a whole. Mytheli Sreenivas traces moments when social actors questioned the wide-ranging, complex, and sometimes contradictory politics of reproduction, asking how practices associated with biological reproduction, and the social meanings attached to these practices, became the target of public debate and contestation. She reveals the intimate imbrication of population concerns with reproductive politics and the economy, and suggests that the ideologies and institutions that encouraged the government to intervene in the reproductive lives of its subjects were not mid-twentieth-century inventions, but arose from concerns that first took shape in colonial India. Exploring the wide implications of these policies and programs, Sreenivas challenges some of the fundamental assumptions that underpin reproductive politics today, in India and transnationally.
