        The souls of white folk

        White settlers in Kenya, 1900s–1920s

by Brett Shadle, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie

Kenya's white settlers have been alternately celebrated and condemned, painted as romantic pioneers or hedonistic bed-hoppers or crude racists. The souls of white folk examines settlers not as caricatures, but as people inhabiting a unique historical moment. It takes seriously - though not uncritically - what settlers said, how they viewed themselves and their world. It argues that the settler soul was composed of a series of interlaced ideas: settlers equated civilisation with a (hard to define) whiteness; they were emotionally enriched through claims to paternalism and trusteeship over Africans; they felt themselves constantly threatened by Africans, by the state, and by the moral failures of other settlers; and they daily enacted their claims to supremacy through rituals of prestige, deference, humiliation and violence. The souls of white folk will appeal to those interested in the histories of Africa, colonialism, and race, and can be appreciated by scholars and students alike.

        District D

        by Artem Chekh

District D is a collection of stories united through a common time period and location, from which gradually emerges a portrait of the author against the backdrop of “other shores,” on which his childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood passed. The book paints a self-critical portrait of the author in which one can discern the features of husbandry and cosmopolitanism, pettiness and magnanimity, and much else. Simultaneously, it paints a group portrait of a few dozen more or less registered residents of the aforementioned Cherkasy district with their more or less successful attempts at surviving the unexpected transition from post-soviet to newly independent Ukraine. According to the author, District D served as therapy for his own traumatic experiences because he wrote it while serving in the war: “I would write it out of me and would feel better; I escaped from that war and those experiences into writing.”

Cattle, Deforestation and Development in the Amazon

An Economic, Agronomic and Environmental Perspective

        by Merle D Faminow

The large-scale destruction of tropical rain forests and the consequences of the loss of their rich, complex ecosystems is one of the most well-publicised, globally important environmental issues of the late twentieth century. The bulk of the remaining forest is to be found in the Amazon Basin, largely in Brazil and the rapid expansion of cattle ranching has been implicated as the main cause of irreversible deforestation in this part of South America over the last decade. This book brings together and critically assesses the economic, agronomic and environmental evidence for the benefits and costs of cattle ranching in the Amazon region. The ecology of the Amazon rain forest is described, along with methods of economic valuation of forests, agricultural systems in the Amazon, the history and underlying causes of its colonisation and the effects on land use, and the extent of deforestation. This leads on to a more detailed description of the cattle ranching systems employed in the Amazon, their economics and effects on the forest. In conclusion, the potential for sustainable cattle production in the Amazon is discussed. The product of considerable field research in Brazil by the author, this book presents a positive perspective on a highly controversial topic, in a uniquely systematic way and with far-reaching implications. It is an essential purchase for livestock economists, agronomists, foresters and environmentalists with an interest in South American and other tropical regions. It will also be a valuable source for advanced students of agronomy, animal science, agricultural economics and ecology.

        The White Witch's Garden

        by Dai Yun, Gui Tuzi

The story of The White Witch's Garden is about a white witch living in the sky wants to create into a garden, and she experimented three thousand years but has not been succeeded. Cannot see the sunlight and no air circulation, no warmth and love, only infinite expectations and a variety of radical experiments, so of course there not open a beautiful flower. The good is that the white witch finally figured it out. She opened the window, let the sun shine in, let the air flow, swept away the tension and anxiety, arrogance and greed in her heart, and the spring would come for the flowers. This picture book is full of children's philosophies and gives children good inspiration for their thoughts. The pictures are beautiful and enhance their aesthetic skills. It is lovely to be persistent, but sometimes it is possible to take a step back, let go of tension and anxiety, and open yourself up to more possibilities.
