View Rights PortalThe coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) is one of the world's most important palms, and contributes significantly to the income and livelihood of many people in tropical countries. Widely referred to as the 'tree of life', coconut has been used as a source of food, drink, oil, medicine, shelter and wood for around 500 years. Every part of the coconut palm can be utilized. The demand for coconut fruit and its products has increased recently as people have become aware of its nutritional and health benefits, especially those of coconut water and virgin coconut oil. This book covers all aspects of coconut including origins and diversity; ecophysiology; production in a changing climate; pests and diseases; harvest and postharvest management; breeding and genetics; as well as the current and future status of coconut as an economic crop. This book is a key resource for researchers and students in horticulture, plant science and agriculture, and those interested in the production of tropical crops, and practitioners in the coconut industry.
Zum Abschluss seiner großartigen Neal-Carey-Reihe schickt Don Winslow seinen literaturbegeisterten Privatdetektiv auf einen Trip durch Nevada. An seiner Seite ein achtzigjähriger Comedian. Über ihm die sengende Sonne. Vor ihm endlose Wüste. Und ihm auf den Fersen ein kurioses Gangsterduo, das Neal und seinen Begleiter den Geiern zum Fraß vorwerfen will. Zum ersten Mal, seit Neal Carey für die »Bank« arbeitet, kommt es ihm nahezu gelegen, dass er einen neuen Auftrag erhält. So kann er wenigstens für eine Weile der Frage entgehen, ob er wirklich Vater werden will. Abgesehen davon ist der Auftrag ein Witz - im fast buchstäblichen Sinne: Neal soll den achtzigjährigen Comedian Natty Silver aus Las Vegas abholen und zurück in sein Seniorendomizil in Palm Desert bringen. Doch Natty entpuppt sich nicht nur als dauerwitzelnde Nervensäge, die die Reise zum Höllentrip macht, er hat außerdem so gar keine Lust, zurückgebracht zu werden. Nach und nach schwant Neal, warum das so ist - kurz bevor er lernen muss, dass man durchaus auch in der Wüste ertrinken kann ... The modern ideology of race, so important in twentieth-century Europe, incorporates both a theory of human societies and a theory of human bodies. Ian Campbell's new study examines how the elite in early modern Ireland spoke about human societies and human bodies, and demonstrates that this elite discourse was grounded in a commitment to the languages and sciences of Renaissance Humanism. Emphasising the education of all of early modern Ireland's antagonistic ethnic groups in common European university and grammar school traditions, Campbell explains both the workings of the learned English critique of Irish society, and the no less learned Irish response. Then he turns to Irish debates on nobility, medicine and theology in order to illuminate the problem of human heredity. He concludes by demonstrating how the Enlightenment swept away these humanist theories of body and society, prior to the development of modern racial ideology in the late eighteenth century. ;
This is a practical guide to mutation breeding in oil palm, representing completely novel work supported by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Section of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division (Vienna, Austria). This is a hands-on, practical guide to general and specific practices in oil palm nurseries to produce healthy, vigorous and uniform plants ready for field planting. There are two nursery stages, a pre-nursery and a main nursery. The pre-nursery receives both germinated seeds and tissue culture produced plantlets (ramets) which are planted in small pots in a relatively small area in which shade and humidity can be controlled. Once seedlings and ramets are established they are transferred to the main nursery, potted-on and grown on to produce field-ready plants.
This is a hand-on practical guide to the use of Trichoderma as a biocontrol for Ganoderma disease in oil palm plantations. The manual provides background information on the benefits of Trichoderma fungi as well as on Ganoderma (Basal Stem Rot), the most devastating disease of oil palm in South East Asia. The disease is caused by the soil-borne fungus, Ganoderma spp and is also found in West Africa and South America.
This is a hands-on, practical guide to describe field trials in oil palm. The location for field trials is key, as is land preparation. Other logistics include the germination of seeds from crossing programmes, planting in a nursery and well-grown seedlings for field planting. The trial design needs to be translated into field lay out. Field planting is a critical point requiring plant care, good labelling, field lining and a system of checks, and must be timed to the rainy season. Recording of trials starts 1 year after planting for crown disease assessment and continues for yield approximately 30 months after field planting. Growth measurements also begin 30 months after planting. Tests for oil yield and quality are carried out one year after yield recording.

Postharvest is an important element of getting fresh, high quality fruit to the consumer and technological advances continue to outpace infrastructure. This book provides valuable, up-to-date information on postharvest handling of seven fruit and nut crops: almonds, figs, table grapes, pistachio, persimmon, peach and pomegranate. These crops are of particular importance in the Mediterranean region, but also to those countries that export and import these crops, where intensive economic resources are dedicated to developing information to understand and solve their postharvest problems. Written by a team of internationally-recognised postharvest experts, this manual collates and verifies essential but often difficult to access information on these important crops, pertinent for the World economics that affect agricultural communities. The book - Covers relevant postharvest topics for each crop across the growing, packing, shipping and retail postharvest phases - Has an emphasis on knowledge useful to solve current worldwide industry problems - Includes practical recommendations - Makes available information previously published in other languages This is must-have manual for growers and commodity handlers, cold storage managers, transportation personnel, produce managers and retail handlers, or anyone in the food chain that packs, transports, stores and sells these fruits and nuts.
This is a hands-on, practical guide to describe physical bunch and oil analysis of oil palm bunches. Bunch and oil analysis laboratories are set up at oil mills to assess production, yield potential of plantations and oil extraction rates relative to targets. The higher the oil yields the planting material produces, the less land that is needed to achieve a specific level of production, hence helping in the sustainability of the crop.
Revolutionary lives of the Red and Black Atlantic brings to light the life histories of a wide range of radical figures whose political activity in relation to the black liberation struggle was profoundly shaped by the global impact and legacy of the Russian Revolution of October 1917. The volume introduces new perspectives on the intellectual trajectories of well-known figures and critical activists including C. L. R. James, Paul Robeson, Walter Rodney and Grace P. Campbell. This biographical approach brings a vivid and distinctive lens to bear on how racialised social and political worlds were negotiated and experienced by these revolutionary figures, and on historic black radical engagements with left political movements, in the wake of the Russian Revolution.
