Mit den Buckower Elegien schuf Bertolt Brecht eine einzigartige Synthese von klassischer Antike und politischer Gegenwart. Fünfzig Jahre später folgt ihm Ekkehard Schall mit seinen Gedichten in die Märkische Schweiz, wo Haus und Umgebung, so Brecht, »ordentlich genug« seien, daß er wieder im Horaz lesen könne. Auch in den Gedichten Ekkehard Schalls erscheint der Landstrich nahe Berlin auf den ersten Blick »ordentlich«: Da gibt es die Seen, die Apfel- und Kirschbäume, das beschauliche Leben in Haus und Garten – doch die Natur ist aus dem Gleichgewicht geraten, der Mond zieht seine Kreise nun anderswo.Auch von der Idylle, der Ordnung Buckows bleibt nicht viel übrig; sie hat sich, wie das Mondlicht, an einen anderen Ort verzogen. Aber war sie nicht ohnehin nur ein Schein? Eine Illusion, die wir uns nur zu gern einbilden wollten? Und wenn ja, was liegt hinter diesem Schein verborgen? Die Gedichte Ekkehard Schalls kratzen an der trügerischen Oberfläche und legen das Dahinterliegende offen: Erschreckende, aber auch vertraute Bilder vom Zustand unserer Zeit kommen zum Vorschein, in einer Sprache, die deutlich an die Buckower Elegien anklingt, sich aber auch von ihnen entfernt und niemals eine bloße Imitation ist. Das Buckower Barometer ist eine Hommage an Bertolt Brecht und gleichzeitig ein empfindlich eingestelltes Barometer, das die Hochs und Tiefs unserer Zeit genau bestimmt.

Die Gesamtausgabe der Gedichte Brechts sollte mit dem vorliegenden siebenten Band abgeschlossen werden. Es ergab sich jedoch die Erfordernis eines achten Nachtragsbandes, der einen Nachlaß zu den vorangegangenen Bänden gibt, Übertragungen, Fragmente und Varianten enthält und auch einige neu aufgefundene Gedichte. Zeitlich schließt der siebente Band das lyrische Oeuvre Brechts ab. Er enthält die Gedichte, die nach seiner Rückkehr aus Amerika (Herbst 1947) bis zu seinem Tode (August 1956) entstanden sind. Im Zentrum des Bandes stehen die berühmten, 1953 geschriebenen "Bukower Eligien", ihnen folgen Gedichte zur Zeit, "Wie soll die große Ordnung aufgebaut werden, ohne die Weisheit des Volkes", "Die Gerechtigkeit ist das Brot des Volkes" und schließlich die letzten lyrischen Äußerungen Brechts: Dauerten wir unendlich So wandelte sich alles Da wir aber endlich sind Bleibt vieles beim Alten Hannah Arendt schrieb 1950: "Ich habe keinen Zweifel daran, daß Berthold Brecht der größte lebende deutsche Lyriker ist." Die siebenbändige Ausgabe macht den Satz wahrer, als er damals erscheinen konnte. Wir begannen 1960 unsere Ausgabe mit dem Hinweis, daß Brechts Rang als Dramatiker unbestritten sei, es gelte nun, den Rang des Gedichteschreibers zu bestimmen.
