Chaim Cohn, 1911 in Lübeck geboren, wanderte 1930 nach Palästina aus. Er studierte in Jerusalem Judaistik und Jura. Seit der Staatsgründung Israels 1948 wirkte er als Generalstaatsanwalt – in der Funktion wirkte er bei der Ergreifung Eichmanns mit Fritz Bauer zusammen –, als Justizminister des Landes und von 1960 an als Richter am Obersten Gerichtshof Israels. Er vertrat sein Land bei der UNO-Menschenrechtskommission. Chaim Cohn starb 2002 in Jerusalem. Christian Wiese, geboren 1961, Studium der Ev. Theologie und Judaistik in Tübingen, Bonn, Jerusalem und Heidelberg, Promotion 1997 in Frankfurt a.M., Habilitation 2006 in Erfurt. 2007-2010 Professor für jüdische Geschichte und Direktor des Centre for German-Jewish Studies an der University of Sussex. Vorher Stationen als Wiss. Mitarbeiter am Salomon-Ludwig-Steinheim-Institut für deutsch-jüdische Geschichte in Duisburg und Wiss. Assistent am Lehrstuhl für Judaistik an der Universität Erfurt. Sein Forschungsgebiet ist die moderne jüdische Geschichte und Philosophie, die Geschichte des Zionismus sowie die Geschichte der jüdisch-christlichen Beziehungen der Neuzeit. Gastprofessuren in Montreal, Dublin, am Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, an der University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) und an der ETH Zürich. Seit 2010 Inhaber der Martin-Buber-Professur für Jüdische Religionsphilosophie an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, seit 2021 Direktor des Frankfurter Buber-Rosenzeig-Instituts für jüdische Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte der Moderne und Gegenwart.

ZURÜCK NACH MASADA von Amnon Ben-Tor Dieses Buch ist die Zusammenfassung von acht bisher erschienenen Bänden der Serie von Masada-Abschlussberichten. Die von Yigael Yadin in den 1960er Jahren geleiteten Ausgrabungen legten den festungsartigen Palast von Herodes frei, wo jüdische Rebellen den letzten Aufstand gegen die mächtigen römischen Legionen in den Jahren 66 bis 73 n. Chr. durchführten. Gemäß der Geschichtsschreibung des zeitgenössischen Geschichtsschreibers Josephus Flavius begingen die Verteidiger einen Massenselbstmord, um sich nicht ergeben zu müssen. Hunderte Freiwillig aus aller Welt nahmen an diesen Ausgrabungen teil. Verschiedene Kapitel behandeln die architektonischen Überreste und kleinen Funde aus den herodianischen, zelotischen und römischen Perioden, die römischen Wälle und die Überreste der byzantinischen Periode. Tausende Artefakte einschließlich Manuskripten wurden bei den Ausgrabungen gefunden. The book paints a self-critical portrait of the author in which one can discern the features of husbandry and cosmopolitanism, pettiness and magnanimity, and much else. Simultaneously, it paints a group portrait of a few dozen more or less registered residents of the aforementioned Cherkasy district with their more or less successful attempts at surviving the unexpected transition from post-soviet to newly independent Ukraine. According to the author, District D served as therapy for his own traumatic experiences because he wrote it while serving in the war: “I would write it out of me and would feel better; I escaped from that war and those experiences into writing.”

This book summarizes the eight volumes of the Masada Final Reports series that have been published to date. The excavations led by Yigael Yadin at the site in the 1960s uncovered the Herodian palace-fortress where Jewish rebels in the revolt against Rome made their last stand against the mighty Roman legions in the years 66–73 CE. According to the accounts of contemporary historian Josephus Flavius, the defenders committed mass suicide rather than surrender. Hundreds of volunteers from around the world participated in those excavations. Chapters cover the architectural remains and small finds of the Herodian, Zealot, and Roman periods; the Roman siegeworks; and Byzantine period remains. Thousands of artifacts including manuscripts were found in the excavations. Masada is not only an archaeological site but also a symbol – mainly, though not exclusively, for modern Israelis. This is reflected in the hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from around the world. Masada was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. In the aftermath of the UK's EU referendum some pointed to a 'revolt' of those 'left behind' by globalisation. Ben Wellings argues instead that Brexit was and is an elite project, firmly situated within the tradition of an expansive English nationalism. Far from being parochial 'Little Englanders', elite Brexiteers sought to replace the European Union with trade and security alliances between 'true friends' and 'traditional allies' in the Anglosphere. In politischen Fragen Antipoden - empfand Schoeps seine preußische Herkunft als Schicksal, das seine Existenz unwandelbar formte, bekannte sich Schalom Ben-Chorin frühzeitig zum Zionismus und zog daraus seine Konsequenzen -, verband beide die Erkenntnis der Notwendigkeit jüdischer Theologie in unserer Zeit. Schoeps, Franz Rosenzweig folgend, ging von der Bejahung der Galuth (Diaspora) aus, während Ben-Chorin die Verwirklichung des Judentums primär in Israel sah und noch heute sieht. Beiden ging es um die Aufzeigung der Demarkationslinien des jüdischen Glaubens, von dem sie meinten, daß er aus der Bewußtseinslage des heutigen Menschen, in Konfrontation mit dem Komplex der Überlieferung, gewonnen werden sollte.
