Henne, a roofer who has a screw loose, and Henrike, a twelve-year-old girl, drag earth, bring plants, nourish and cherish the small piece of green. They are supported by two chimney sweeps, a mysterious giant with an iron hand, a rooftop walker, Henrike’s teacher and all sorts of mystic forces. Duck Ilse builds a nest and hatches her chicks. Everything seems peaceful, but appearances are deceptive – in the background Mrs Hux tries to chase away the people from the roof and to re-establish order. American Goddess

        A myth born in Scotland

        by L.M. Affrossman

WHAT IF YOU HAD AN IDEA THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING? In this provocative and thought-provoking novel, Affrossman takes a look at the nature of modern day belief. Post pandemic, Peter Kelso and his wife, Ellisha, have moved to Edinburgh in a last desperate bid to get their lives back on track. But things rapidly start to spiral out of control. Just as there seems no hope, an encounter with Edinburgh University’s most eccentric professor of history leads them to uncover a source of knowledge kept hidden for centuries. Using this knowledge, known as The Woman’s Secret, Peter sets out to heal a damaged world, and the Internet provides the perfect platform for the new world order to spread. In the midst of this, American, mixed-race, Ellisha is an unlikely messiah, but she becomes the face of a new age and soon everyone is pinning their hopes upon her. But if they thought The Woman’s Secret would produce a kinder, gentler world, they are in for a terrible shock. As corruption starts to cast its shadow, cracks begin to show and Peter and Ellisha’s reactions are very different to the encroaching threat. As they become embroiled in their own private battles, unseen forces are moving against them.

        Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms

        Stories and Essays

        by Tim McLoughlin

In Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Tim McLoughlin draws upon his three-decade career in the criminal justice system with his characteristic wit and his fascination with misfits and malfeasance. A lifetime living and working in New York City feeds short stories that evoke a landscape of characters rife with personal arrogance and misjudgment; and nonfiction essays about toeing the line when the line keeps disappearing. An opioid-addicted catsitter electronically eavesdrops on his neighbors only to hear devastating truths. A degenerate gambler stakes his life on a long shot because he sees three lucky numbers on the license plate of a passing car. In the nonfiction essays, we learn that the system plays a role in supporting vice, as long as it gets a cut. Altar boys compete to work weddings and funerals for tips in the shadow of predatory priests. Cops become robbers, and a mob boss just might be a civil rights icon. McLoughlin shines a light on worlds that few have access to. Always urban, often New York–centric, in his work a recurring theme is chronic displacement, people standing still in a city that is always changing. These are McLoughlin’s ghosts, these casualties of progress, and he holds them dear and celebrates them.
