        Tourism in Destination Communities

by Edited by Shalini Singh, Dallen J Timothy, Ross Dowling

As a result of the ongoing growth in the tourism industry, many destinations around the world are undergoing transformations. New destinations are being 'discovered' in regions previously ignored, as people search for regions that are yet unspoiled by the ravages of mass tourism. At the same time, traditional destinations are experiencing rapid environmental, socio-cultural and economic modifications. These changes have the most effect on the destination community - the location where tourists spend their time and money, and influence development or degradation of the local environment.Tourism in Destination Communities describes both the positive and negative effects of tourism on the destination community. The chapters are divided into three sections which address the relationship between tourism and the destination community, the various impacts of tourism on the destination community and the challenges and opportunities for destination communities. Each chapter contains brief case studies and empirical examples.

        Destination Marketing and Management

        Theories and Applications

by Edited by Youcheng Wang, Abraham Pizam.

Most tourism activities take place at a destination, and destination serves as a fundamental unit of analysis in any modelling of the tourism system. However, destination marketing and management is a complex subject that requires a comprehensive, holistic and systematic approach. From the demand side, travellers have a choice of available destinations; from the supply side, destination marketing organizations are competing for attention from a highly competitive marketplace. Taking an integrated and comprehensive approach, this book focuses on both the macro and micro aspects of destination marketing and management. Some key areas covered include the consumer decision making process, product development and distribution and the use of emerging technologies in destination marketing.

        Addressing the other woman

Textual correspondences in feminist art and writing

        by Kimberly Lamm

This book analyses how three artists - Adrian Piper, Nancy Spero and Mary Kelly - worked with the visual dimensions of language in the 1960s and 1970s. These artists used text and images of writing to challenge female stereotypes, addressing viewers and asking them to participate in the project of imagining women beyond familiar words and images of subordination. The book explores this dimension of their work through the concept of 'the other woman', a utopian wish to reach women and correspond with them across similarities and differences. To make the artwork's aspirations more concrete, it places the artists in correspondence with three writers - Angela Davis, Valerie Solanas, and Laura Mulvey - who also addressed the limited range of images through which women are allowed to become visible.

        Searching for community

ways of critical thinking in global south

        by Fabricio Pereira da Silva

As a response to the widespread social, economic and ecological malaise that is a consequence of the expansion of modernity, Fabricio Pereira da Silva gives voice to a quest that has long been a banner of the left: the yearning for a fairer, more equitable way of life, free from the modern values of individualism, exploitation and inconsequential and disproportionate economic growth, based on the recovery and re-reading of pre-capitalist ways of life. This book is driven by the urgency of a utopia that recovers the ideas of communality gestated in the global periphery to inspire another kind of future. In Search of Community presents a list of theoretical perspectives created in the so-called Global South, with the aim of overcoming a “monoculture of knowledge”. Fabricio Pereira da Silva analyzes Mariátegui's Indo-American socialism, the concepts of negritude and ubuntu, 20th century African socialisms, the idea of Good Living (sumak kawsay/suma qamaña) and Bhutan's gross internal happiness. By “illustrating the richness of proposals from the periphery”, the author offers us other theoretical resources, capable of dealing with the “crisis of modernity, the crisis of Western Marxism and socialist projects in a modernist key”.

        Winter Tourism

        Trends and Challenges

by Ulrike Pröbstl-Haider, Harold Richins, Stefan Türk

Winter tourism has seen increased levels of investment in recent times as new ski destinations develop and traditional skiing destinations merge to reduce economic risks by means of spatial distribution. Increasingly environmental issues in many established ski resorts, including certifications and adaptions of the management regime, and new mobility concepts to reduce CO2 emissions caused by the travel behavior of the winter tourists, are growing areas of consideration. This includes the importance of scenic beauty, nature and sustainable development as well as snow reliability and avalanche safety. Finally skiers themselves and their preferences (destination choice), need to be considered as part of demographic change and changing leisure time habits, in particular considering the Chinese market and its impact in the future. The book will explore these trends and discuss the different approaches and adaption strategies that are employed in the European Alpine region, North America, and Eastern Europe.

        Literary Tourism

        Theories, Practice and Case Studies

by Ian Jenkins, Katrín Anna Lund

Literary tourism is a nascent field in tourism studies, yet tourists often travel in the footsteps of well-known authors and stories. Providing a wide-ranging cornucopia of literary tourism topics, this book fully explores the interconnections between the written word and travel. It includes tourism stories using guidebooks, films, television and electronic media, and recognises that stories, texts and narratives, even if they cannot be classified as traditional travel writing, can become journeys in themselves and take us on imaginary voyages. Furthermore, the book: - Provides a grounding in the theoretical perspectives on literature and the tourist experience; - Explores practical applications of literary tourism, such as destination promotion and creation, responsible tourism and learning benefits; - Uses global case studies to study literary tourism in action. Appealing to a wide audience of different disciplines, it encompasses subjects such as business literary writing, historical journeys and the poetry of Dylan Thomas. The use of these different perspectives demonstrates how heavily and widely literature influences travel, tourists and tourism, making it an important read for researchers and students of tourism, social science and literature.

        Tourism as a Resource-based Industry

Based on the work of Sondre Svalastog

by Anna Lydia Svalastog, Dieter K Müller, Ian Jenkins, Øystein Aas, Lars Aronsson, Sjur Baardsen, Børge Dahle, Marko Košcak, Brian McNeil, Stian Stensland, Sondre Svalastog, Anthony S. Travis

Tourism resources - the availability and sustainability of the supplies tourism relies on - have long been a topic of interest for the industry. Often, however, they are considered in silo. There is a key need now for the development of a conceptual framework for resource analysis, integrating all aspects of social, cultural and natural resources, as well as the importance of local conditions. In this way, tourism can be generated that is both productive and sustainable. Based on and beginning with Norwegian scholar Sondre Svalastog's conceptual and theoretical work, this book introduces a selection of new case studies exemplifying the usefulness of this approach and bringing it into the English language for the tourism industry as a whole. This book: - Reviews local conditions and resources, climate change concerns, and the differences between types of tourist attracted to particular regions; - Considers how best to maximise potential and production, ensuring that both the host community and tourists benefit; - Provides a wide-ranging selection of case studies covering topics such as urban heritage, national parks and niche, location-specific tourism products. In a constantly changing world where the tourist industry is large and economically important, tourism research needs to be in a process of constant renewal of risk analysis, oriented towards society, culture and nature at the same time. To ensure sound planning within the industry, this book promotes the need for research-based knowledge, for both tourism researchers and students.

        Nomos und Narrativ

        Studien zur Theorie des Rechts

        by Robert Cover, Benedict Vischer

        Destination Australia

        Migration to Australia since 1901

        by Eric Richards

        In 1901 most Australians were loyal, white subjects of the British Empire with direct connections to Britain. Within a hundred years, following an unparalleled immigration program, its population was one of the most diverse on earth. No other country has achieved such radical social and demographic change in so short a time. Destination Australia tells the story of this extraordinary transformation. Against the odds, this change has caused minimal social disruption and tension. While immigration has generated some political and social anxieties, Australia has maintained a stable democracy and a coherent social fabric. One of the impressive achievements of this book is in explaining why this might be so. Eric Richards recounts the experiences of many individual migrants from all over the world, examines the dramas and challenges of officials involved in this grand experiment and ends up telling a truly remarkable story. Compelling and revealing, Destination Australia is essentially the Australian story of the twentieth century. ;
