Educational systems worldwide are facing an enormous shift as a result of sociocultural, political, economic, and technological changes. The technologies and practices that have developed over the last decade have been heralded as opportunities to transform both online and traditional education systems. While proponents of these new ideas often postulate that they have the potential to address the educational problems facing both students and institutions and that they could provide an opportunity to rethink the ways that education is organized and enacted, there is little evidence of emerging technologies and practices in use in online education. Because researchers and practitioners interested in these possibilities often reside in various disciplines and academic departments the sharing and dissemination of their work across often rigid boundaries is a formidable task. Contributors to Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning include individuals who are shaping the future of online learning with their innovative applications and investigations on the impact of issues such as openness, analytics, MOOCs, and social media. Digital Teaching at University

Digital media can enrich university teaching in many ways. Whether in classroom-only courses, online phases or a mixture of both: this volume deals with the various ways of integrating digital media into your own teaching, in addition to didactic and motivational principles. Using example scenarios, practical instructions and tips for successful implementation are given. The authors present how online and classroom phases can be sensibly combined into a blended learning arrangement based on three typical application models. Using practical examples from everyday teaching as well as ideas and tips for methodological design, they also present appropriate didactic and motivational designs – for the design of online phases on the one hand and for the enrichment of face-to-face events with digital tools on the other.

Balloon English is a perfect tool for building students’ communication skills. It is filled with a wide range of fiction and non-fiction graded texts that cover many interesting and familiar topics. This approach allows students to gradually develop their reading and listening skills and to not be overwhelmed by the text. The series follows the acclaimed presentation-practice-production method of teaching, and comprehension of the texts is developed through a range of simple and clear exercises supported by a feedback and reward system that motivates and attracts students to language learning. b) The Presentation, Practice and Production approach is used so that the language is presented in the form of videos, slideshows, meaningful illustrations with texts, and followed by controlled practice activities, and finally used in pairs or groups more freely, in the production stage. The practice activities relate to the main topic of the lesson and enable students to build their confidence and carry out the learning tasks successfully. At the end of each lesson students have an opportunity to use the English that they have learnt and to develop fluency. Students are encouraged to work in pairs or groups, and even walk around the classroom as part of the learning process. Personalization is strongly supported by artificial intelligence (AI) which has been built into the Balloon English tools.
