        My Italy with Berlusconi

        And what has become of it. Essays, conversations, reports

        by Michaela Namuth

        The political era of media entrepreneur and multi-billionaire Silvio Berlusconi began in 1994. German journalist Michaela Namuth also arrived in Rome at that time. He became prime minister, she became a freelance correspondent for various newspapers. She spent the long period of his government with him. During this time, the populist Berlusconi not only paved the way for a far-right government, he was also an ice-breaker for other right-wing populists in Europe and elsewhere. What else happened during and after Berlusconi's time in power is told in 20 chapters of articles, reports and interviews. The result is a colourful mosaic of contemporary Italy. It is about publishing, design, crime fiction, the mafia, a women's factory, the south and Nutella. Under Berlusconi, the country has changed. Many speak of “Berlusconisation”, by which they mean the gradual weakening of democracy. It is a critical book, but also a declaration of love to a contradictory country whose name still has a special ring to many ears.

        The towns of Italy in the later Middle Ages

        by Trevor Dean

        The towns of Italy in the later middle ages presents over one hundred fascinating documents, carefully selected and coordinated from the richest, most innovative and most documented society of the European Middle Ages. No other English language sourcebook has the same geographical or chronological range. This collection is carefully structured around the crisis of the fourteenth century and arranged in contrasting groups of texts. By connecting documents in translation to recent scholarship and debates, it addresses five key areas of medieval urban history: the physical environment, civic religion, economy, society and politics. Offers students well-translated and effectively contextualised documents along with some guidance to the secondary work of Italian scholars which is largely inaccessible to undergraduate students.

        Cinema - Italy

        by Stefania Parigi, Des O'Rawe

        A journey to the Italian cinema that overturns established views and opens up new perspectives and interpretations. Its itinerary is organized in four stages. The first is an analysis of the theories of Cesare Zavattini on neorealism which overturns widely accepted positions both on Zavattini and on neorealism. The second confronts a key film of the post-war Italian cinema, Roberto Rossellini's Paisà, by examining the nature of its realism. The third is dedicated to Luchino Visconti: to questions of the use of language exemplified in his La terra trema, the use of settings, costume and light as agents of meaning in his Il Gattopardo and Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa. The final voyage of the film is to the physical and symbolic construction of heaven and earth in the work of Pasolini. Particular attention is given to the representation of the body in his last four films: the grotesque and mythical bodies in popular tradition in his Trilogia di vita and the tortured bodies destroyed by the mass media in Salò. ;

        Ich war der letzte Bürger der DDR

        Mein Leben als Enkel der Honeckers

        by Thomas Grimm, Roberto Yáñez, Roberto Leonardo Yañez Betancourt, Friedrich von Heydwolff

        Roberto Yáñez, der Enkel von Margot und Erich Honecker, bricht sein Schweigen. Erstmals erzählt er von den Glanzzeiten seiner Kindheit, vom Ende der DDR, wie es die Honeckers als Familie erlebt haben, und von den letzten Lebensjahren seiner Großeltern in Chile. Als die Mauer fällt, ist Roberto 15 Jahre alt. Die geliebten Großeltern werden als Verbrecher gejagt, und auch der Teenager fühlt sich noch verfolgt, nachdem seine Familie in das Heimatland seines Vaters ausgereist ist. Im fremden Chile findet er sich nur schwer zurecht. Nach der Trennung der Eltern zieht er zu seiner Großmutter Margot Honecker, die unbeirrt an den DDR-Glaubenssätzen festhält. Roberto hingegen entdeckt ein neues Leben – zwischen Kunst, Musik und Drogen. Dennoch bleibt seine Großmutter die engste Bezugsperson in seinem Leben, immer wieder kehrt der »Lieblingsenkel« zu ihr zurück. Erst nach ihrem Tod 2016 kann er sich von der Last seiner Familiengeschichte befreien – und erzählen.

        Marcel Pagnol

        by Brett Bowles, Diana Holmes, Robert Ingram

        Though long ignored or dismissed by film critics and scholars, Marcel Pagnol (1895-1974) was among the most influential auteurs of his era. This comprehensive overview of Pagnol's career, the first ever published in English, highlights his unique place in French cinema as a self-sufficient writer-producer-director and his contribution to the long-term evolution of filmmaking in a broader European context. In addition to reassessing the converted playwright's controversial prioritisation of speech over image, the book juxtaposes Pagnol's sunny rural melodramas with the dark, urban variety of poetic realism practised by influential peers such as Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné. In his penchant for outdoor location shooting and ethnographic authenticity, as well as his stubborn attachment to independent, artisanal production values, Pagnol served as a precursor to the French New Wave and Italian Neo-Realism, inspiring the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Vittorio De Sica, and Roberto Rossellini. ;

        Fascist Italy

        by John Whittam

        Fascist Italy is a concise introduction to the phenomenon of Italian fascism and its impact. The author balances an up-to-date re-evaluation of political, diplomatic and military developments with a full assessment of the more neglected domestic and cultural dimensions of the subject. With the aid of documents and recent research on the subject, this book presents an analysis of the origins of the movement, the reasons behind its political success and the methods used to construct and consolidate a regime capable of resolving the problems of mass society in the 20th century. Within his broad-ranging analysis, Whittam places particular emphasis on the attempts to exert social control, the interaction of party and state, the tension between revolutionary and conservative tendencies and on the role of Il Duce. Mussolini's triumphs and failures in peace and war and his ultimate responsibility for the disintegration of the regime are discussed objectively. ;

        Crafting design in Italy

        From post-war to postmodernism

        by Catharine Rossi, Christopher Breward, Bill Sherman

        Crafting design in Italy is the first book to examine the role that craft played in post-war Italian design, one of the most celebrated design episodes in the twentieth century. Craft was vital to the development of Italian design, and it has been so far overlooked. This book examines the multiple ways craft shaped Italian design from 1945 to the 1980s in the context of bigger socio-economic, cultural and political change; from post-war reconstruction to the economic 'miracle' of the 1960s, to the rise of the countercultural Radical Design movement and advent of postmodernism. It consists of case studies on design areas including product, furniture, fashion, glass and ceramics to bring to light previously unknown makers and objects as well as re-examine design 'icons' such as Gio Ponti's Superleggera chair and Ettore Sottsass's Memphisware. It also offers a model for analysing design and craft's relationship in other contexts, including today. ;

        Roman

        by Roberto Cotroneo, Karin Krieger

        Roberto Cotroneo wurde 1961 in der norditalienischen Stadt Alessandria geboren. Er studierte Philosophie und einige Jahre Klavier. Seit 1983 war er u.a. für L'Europeo, L'Espresso, der renommierten Wochenzeitschrift, und Sole 24 Ore als Literaturkritiker tätig. Seit 1994 zeichnet er für den Kulturteil von L'Espresso verantwortlich. Er gilt als der angesehenste und zugleich gefürchtetste Kritiker Italiens. Sein erstes Buch, Wenn ein Kind an einem Sommermorgen. Briefe an meinen Sohn über die Liebe zu Büchern, erschien 1996 in deutscher Übersetzung im Marion von Schroeder Verlag in Düsseldorf und 2002 im Insel Verlag Frankfurt. Diese unterschwellige Autobiographie und Autopoetik ist eine suggestive Einführung in die Kunst des kritischen Lesens. Umberto Eco, in dessen Nachfolge Cotroneo erzählerisch ganz offensichtlich steht, urteilte über dieses Buch: "Roberto Cotroneo zeigt, daß er wirklich weiß, wie Bücher gelesen werden sollten."

        Das unnennbare Heute

        by Roberto Calasso

        Roberto Calassos Essay ist in drei Kapitel gegliedert. Das dritte, zwei Seiten lang, beschreibt einen Traum Baudelaires als Präfiguration der zusammenstürzenden Zwillingstürme (9/11). Das zweite, »Die Wiener Gasgesellschaft«, durchläuft die Jahre 1933 bis 1945. Es präsentiert Zitate deutscher und ausländischer Autoren, die damals ihre Eindrücke von Nazi-Deutschland festgehalten haben (Louis-Ferdinand Céline, André Gide, Simone Weil, Klaus Mann, Walter Benjamin, Carl Schmitt, Ernst Jünger, Arthur Koestler, Curzio Malaparte, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett u. a.). Erläuternd führt der Autor durch ein Panoptikum, in dem Naivität immer mehr dem Entsetzen weicht. Es sind Blicke auf Deutschland außerhalb der Leitlinien deutscher Erinnerungskultur, Blicke der unmittelbaren Erfahrung. »Touristen und Terroristen«, das theoretisch grundlegende erste Kapitel, nimmt gesellschaftskritische Motive aus Calassos letztem Buch Die Glut auf und spitzt sie zu. Gesellschaft überhaupt ist ein Gegner von metaphysischem Rang, nur metaphysische Waffen sind gegen ihn tauglich. Deren Arsenale jedoch hat die säkularisierte Gesellschaft geplündert. Sorge, in der Immanenz zu ersticken, prägt Das unnennbare Heute. Alles, was über die Gesellschaft hinaus auf ein Anderes, Jenseitiges wies, hat sie sich in pervertierter Form dienstbar gemacht: Ritus, Theologie, Metaphysik, selbst das Denken und die Sprache. Als ein Symptom dieser Situation, des »unnennbaren Heute« also, interpretiert Calasso den Terrorismus - den heutigen, insbesondere islamistischen, und den von früher. »Nichts ist wahr, alles ist erlaubt.«

        Frühlingsregen

        Gedichte und Bilder

        by Roberto Yáñez

        Magische Landschaften aus Pyramiden und Würfeln, übernatürlich leuchtende Bergseen und bizarre Gestalten formen die phantasmagorische Bildwelt des chilenischen Malers und Lyrikers Roberto Yañez. Dieses Buch verbindet die farbkräftigen Gebilde mit Versen, die ihre surreale Herkunft nicht verleugnen. Bald schlägt den Dichter ein Gespenst, bald ein Satan, gelegentlich auch ein merkwürdiger Engel in seinen Bann. Dann regt sich unter dem Bann schwerer Träume etwas wie die Sehnsucht nach Einheit und Erneuerung: »Jetzt ist die Welt wieder zusammengewachsen.«
