Volunteerism is a topic of increasing importance in this age of budget cuts, declining employment and amid the threat posed by other competing leisure pursuits. There are both social and economic benefits of volunteering. As we are becoming more reliant on volunteers, there is a need for a better understanding of why people take up volunteering, and how to recruit, manage, motivate, and support volunteers most effectively. In order for organisations that host volunteers to achieve the most from their volunteers, they must understand how to give them the best "leisure" experience. This book examines critical aspects of contemporary volunteerism, from the perspective of a variety of volunteering contexts. It will appeal to academic researchers and students in disciplines such as leisure, recreation, tourism, management and sociology as well as practitioners in the voluntary sector (including volunteers), National and Local Government and those organising special events that depend on voluntary support.

We experience in our online world as well as in our ‘real lives’ an increase in slander and abuse, intimidation, hatred and even physical violence against individuals who are committed to our society. If such attacks discourage people from getting involved, this endangers our democracy that depends on participation. Lawyer Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger and the writer Gunna Wendt interviewed ten committed volunteers about the causes, circumstances and consequences of hatred and violence. These visceral portraits provide a telling insight into the dangers, while showing that we can and must counter the degradation of political rhetoric with composure, respect and tolerance – and with effective measures to protect those at risk.

Volunteers. Age of Heroes

Andrii Kotliarchuk's war history photo project tells the story of the ongoing war in the East of Ukraine and is dedicated to volunteers and anti-terrorist operation veterans. The project unfolded between 2014 and 2018 and the photographs were taken at the ground-zero frontline. The album includes non-random photographs taken in the square frame on black-and-white wide film. The photographer travelled hundreds of kilometres along the contact line, took hundreds of thoughtful shots, and made hundreds of portraits of servicemen before and after battles. The photographs are accompanied by the opinions of contemporaries of the events, their recollections, and observations. The photo project is not accidental, it was thoroughly planned by the author from the very beginning. The first part of the photo project was exhibited in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as well as demonstrated in museums all over the country. It was also shown at the National Art Museum of Georgia. The publication reproduces a large array of photos through which we can see how the strength of the Ukrainian army was gradually revived. The pictures were shot in the same style and this artistic approach brings up associations with the battle-scene paintings of the past. The book also includes many images of genre scenes, landscapes and still lifes. Is it possible to find aesthetics in a war? Should the photography depict the heart-breaking moments of military confrontation? Is it possible to combine documentary photography with artistic vision? Andrii Kotliarchuk's project "Volunteers. Age of Heroes" is an attempt to answer these questions.

Fugue 119. Tonality of captivity

"Fugue 119" is based on true story of the "Donbas" battalion volunteers who were captured by Russians after the famous battle at the city of Ilovaisk (Donbas). The book describes how it is to be a prisoner of war. It was impossible to write about the events in a traditional writing method and author invented his own. He applied the principle of composing a fugue - a polyphonic piece of music to his writing. The structure of the book is based on a double three-part fugue with a code. This makes it possible to fully convey the plexus of pain and horror - the every day routine of captivity, where the way out is possible only through death. "Fugue 119" is a continuation of the book "Dance of Death" and is the second in the upcoming trilogy "2014". "Fugue 119" was long listed for the "BBC Book of the Year 2021"
