Consuelo’s Latin American roots play a huge role in our publishing today, with many of our books being translated into Spanish as stand alone or bilingual publications. Publishing everything from hard-hitting, inspirational memoirs, thrilling YA dystopias, gripping historical fiction, fun early learning, colourful, exciting children's books, literature for the classic shelf, and poetry to entice you, there is one book for every genre!

        Nombres propios (Proper nouns)

        by Mercedes Alvarado

In the face of uncertainty, we have lost the right to mourn; in the face of this, perhaps all that remains is to search, to ask, to name. This is a book that puts memory in the foreground, a recognition of the collective mourning that runs through us. Nombres propios is an approach to the legitimate and loving resistance that sustains the living victims of violence in Mexico. As Natalia Mendoza notes in the prologue: Alvarado's verses point to the concrete mechanism that could inaugurate a new time.

        Bullying and Peer Victimization

by Amie E. Grills, Melissa Holt, Gerald Reid, Chelsey Bowman

A concise guide to understanding, assessing, and addressing bullying There has been an explosion of media attention on youth bullying and peer victimization over the last decade, with cyberbullying becoming more prevalent through the use of social media. While any bullying has serious negative physical and mental health effects which can lead the bullied individual to great despair and even suicide, there are also negative outcomes for the bullies themselves. This volume provides clinicians with clear guidance on how to assess and treat this complex behavior. In this evidence-based guide, practitioners learn about bullying, its prevalence, how cyberbullying differs from in-person bullying, what models are available for understanding how bullying occurs, and the best tools and approaches for assessment of these behaviors. The reader is guided through the most effective school-based prevention programs that aim to reduce bullying, and a clinical vignette gives hands-on insight into how a bullying case in a school is managed. Additional resources are provided in an appendix. This book is ideal for educational psychologists, child psychologists, and anyone working with children and adolescents who is committed to helping those being bullied.

Why We End Up Just Where We Should

        by Hillel Lerman

Ted and Jimmy have just completed their studies at the Georgetown University School of Law. They are about to leave the dorm room they have shared and head for home, but they argue. Jimmy claims that in a few short years he will be a U.S. senator. His father is a well-known lawyer and he will get his son elected. Ted says there’s no way; Jimmy’s not the senator type! Professor Carter, much admired by these two former students, happens to be passing by. They ask him if there is, indeed, such a thing as a "senator type," and if he thinks Jimmy will be able to fulfill his ambition. Carter’s response comes in the form of a highly unusual suggestion: to join him on a tour around the world, with two weeks at different locations across the globe to help further his research. "The question about Jimmy," he says, "is much larger. It concerns extremely important, basic principles that determine the paths people take in their lives." They will learn why George is a bus driver who spends every day making roundtrips between Washington and Baltimore, and why Edward is the British ambassador to Egypt. They are also going to get an answer to the question they posed to begin with. What Professor Carter doesn’t mention is that he is staking his entire academic career on these two students. The real reason for the invitation is that Carter desperately needs their help in proving a theory he has developed, one that is jeered by his faculty colleagues. "Decide quickly," he tells them. "We’ll be leaving very soon…." This inspirational novel artfully hammers the notion that there is no real difference between a university professor and a custodial worker; only their professions differ. Period. Unlike what we were programmed to believe, no person is smarter than another, and no person is more foolish, either. People are just people. The Chinese woman bending over in a rice paddy – just like the chief justice of the Supreme Court – has desires, ambitions, and dreams, feels happiness, sadness, and pain. This seemingly obvious truth has been presented clearly and convincingly in this fascinating tale, which captures the reader's mind and imagination from start to the surprising end. It is a journey of discovery with the human being as its destination, and veers off the beaten track to view familiar concepts like equality and racism from an entirely different perspective. This challenging quest takes the reader from the slums of Bombay to a soccer field in Buenos Aires, then to Brooklyn’s Borough Park neighborhood, and from there to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Scene by scene, the thread of the story gradually unravels, revealing the code that leads human beings to the places they are in life. Why indeed is George a bus driver while Edward is a British ambassador? Nobody's Fool provides the answer.   Hillel Lerman is an industrial engineer who has managed a number of startup companies from their onset, some of them reaching a successful exit, and also established three startup ventures of his own initiative. For many years he has been exploring philosophy, particularly in the area of determination and free choice. The author is married, with four children and a growing gang of grandchildren. He wrote this book while on a business trip, out of a sudden impulse, without financial or other motivation.

Medicinal Plants used in Traditional Persian Medicine

by Hartwig Schulz, Seyed Ahmad Emami, Farsad Nadjafi

Medicinal plants and the natural products within them, still remain the starting point for breakthroughs in the development of safe, pharmacologically active synthetic molecules for use in a wide variety of clinical situations. Traditional Persian Medicine (TPM) is one of the most ancient medical doctrines, and is well-documented in terms of information about diseases, diagnoses and treatments, especially by the application of medicinal plants. TPM has been used for centuries worldwide, and many of these methods are still used in Iran today. This book introduces the basics of TPM, and describes the key medicinal plants which are used for the treatment of different diseases. It also creates possible new targets for research activities in drug discovery of natural products. The book is richly illustrated with coloured figures of historic drawings from old Persian pharmacopoeia and photos of plants in their natural habitats. References to Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese Medicine and to monastic medicine in Europe are also made. Knowledge about medicinal plants used in TPM still exists in Iran, however, there is a risk that the detailed expertise provided by the older generation will be lost in the near future. It is therefore important that this cultural heritage of humanity is properly preserved. This book provides a valuable, evidence-based resource on TPM for researchers, practitioners and students in medicinal plants, ethnobotany and herbal medicine.

        Ni un pelo de tonto

        by Hillel Lerman

        The holocaust

        Critical historical approaches

        by Donald Bloxham, Tony Kushner

        Despite the massive literature on the Holocaust, our understanding of it has traditionally been influenced by rather unsophisticated early perspectives and silences. This book summarises and criticises the existing scholarship on the subject and suggests new ways by which we can approach its study. It addresses the use of victim testimony and asks important questions: What function does recording the past serve for the victim? What do historians want from it? Are these two perspectives incompatible? The perpetrators of the Holocaust and the development of the murder process are closely examined. The book also compares the mentalities of the killers and the contexts of the killing with those in other acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing in the first half of the twentieth century, searching for an explanation within these comparisons. In addition, it looks at the bystanders to the Holocaust - considering the complexity and ambiguity at the heart of contemporary responses, especially within the western liberal democracies. Ultimately, this text highlights the essential need to place the Holocaust in the broadest possible context, emphasising the importance of producing high quality but sensitive scholarship in its study. ;

        Reconstructing lives

Victims of war in the Middle East and Médecins Sans Frontières

        by Vanja Kovacic, Bertrand Taithe

This book attempts to establish a more holistic approach to the rehabilitation of war-injured civilians, one that adjusts to the patients' long-term needs. Kovacic not only offers an insight into the daily realities of patients during and after rehabilitation, but seeks to develop a new way to perceive, respect and involve them in health care. Based on comprehensive interviews with patients and MSF staff, as well as extended field observations, Reconstructing lives follows Syrian and Iraqi war-injured civilians in their journey to recovery. From their improvised medical treatment in their home countries, to the MSF-run hospital in Amman Jordan, to their return home, Kovacic explores how individuals attempt to pick up the pieces of their previous lives, add new elements from their treatment and travel experiences, and finally establish a new reconstructed reality. The book explores how the interaction between MSF staff and their patients contributes to the immense task of healing that awaits victims of war. The reader visits the intimate medical and domestic spaces that usually remain closed to the outside observer, spaces rich with human contact, perceptions, emotions, conflicts and reconciliations.

Flowing ideologies. Ideas and politics in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries

        by Volodymyr Yermolenko

"Flowing Ideologies" is a detailed and unexpected history of ideas in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book is about how the concepts and metaphors born in the era of the French Revolution continued to live in the totalitarian ideologies of the 20th century, how the concepts of going through death, the holy criminal, the victim-messiah, the renewing catastrophe feed the history of the last two centuries, inspiring ideological allies and antipodes. It is also a detailed and ruthless analysis of the main ideological monsters of our time: racism, communism, Nazism, fascism, and their mixtures. The book is written on the crossroad of different disciplines: philosophy, history of ideas, political science and history of literature.

Nutrition and Eating Disorders, Third Edition

        by Lori A. Smolin, Ph.D. and Mary B. Grosvenor, M.S., R.D.

Praise for the previous edition: "...easy-to-read...well-balanced...a good amount of detail."—School Library Journal Media images of "ideal bodies"—which, in reality, are often dangerously thin—make it easy for people to start worrying about their own body shapes and compare themselves to these model ideals. For some people, this concern with thinness becomes an obsession, and they fall victim to eating disorders. The sufferer may starve him- or herself, exercise too much, or deliberately vomit to purge the body of calories. This new edition of Nutrition and Eating Disorders, Third Edition examines some of the most common eating disorders, from anorexia nervosa to binge eating.
