        The Cooke sisters

Education, piety and politics in early modern England

        by Gemma Allen

This book is a study of five remarkable sixteenth-century women. Part of the select group of Tudor women allowed access to a formal education, the Cooke sisters were also well-connected through their marriages to influential Elizabethan politicians. Drawing particularly on the sisters' own writings, this book demonstrates that the sisters' education extended far beyond that normally allowed for sixteenth-century women, challenging the view that women in this period were excluded from using their formal education to practical effect. It reveals that the sisters' learning provided them with opportunities to communicate effectively their own priorities through their translations, verse and letters. By reconstructing the sisters' networks, it demonstrates how they worked alongside - and sometimes against - family members over matters of politics and religion, empowered by their exceptional education. Providing new perspectives on these key issues, it will be essential reading for early modern historians and literary scholars.

        The Slope of Sisters

        China Story Picture Books

        by Lu Mei

China Story Picture Books is the first set of children's picture books launched by the Bingxin Award Committee. This set of books covers the works of seven Bingxin Award-winning writers of different ages including children's literature masters and promising young writers. The illustrations are full of traditional Chinese cultural elements such as dragon lantern dance, paper cutting, oil paper umbrella, and bamboo. Powerful painters at home and abroad are invited to do illustrations, which brings interesting fusion and collision of Chinese and foreign cultures to the books. In addition to the original illustrations, the stories are more touching. Every child can harvest the courage and wisdom for growing up from these stories.   The series consists of 7 picture books: The Dragon Lantern, The Path of Golden Flowers, The Child in Three-Story Attic, The School Day Gifts, The Secret of Crossing, The Slope of Sisters.   The Slope of Sisters tells a story of meeting childhood self. Xiaomei incarnated a waterblue dragonfly she met in her childhood. She flied over large fields with wheat waves and the childhood hillside full of broad bean flowers, and recalled the summer vacation she spent with her sister in her childhood when her sister firmly said: "You should learn to be strong and don't cry."

Catholic nuns and sisters in a secular age

        Britain, 1945–90

        by Carmen M. Mangion

This is the first in-depth study of post-war female religious life. It draws on archival materials and a remarkable set of eighty interviews to place Catholic sisters and nuns at the heart of the turbulent 1960s, integrating their story of social change into a larger British and international one. Shedding new light on how religious bodies engaged in modernisation, it addresses themes such as the Modern Girl and youth culture, '1968', generational discourse, post-war modernity, the voluntary sector and the women's movement. Women religious were at the forefront of the Roman Catholic Church's movement of adaptation and renewal towards the world. This volume tells their stories in their own words.

        Ask Miechka

        by Eugenia Kuznetsova

The story of “Ask Miechka” features four generations of women captured during one summer. Two sisters, Mia and Lilia, come to their “shelter”, their grandmother's old house where they have spent their childhood, in an attempt to put on hold their upcoming life-changing decisions: deciding on immigrating or staying, choosing between a reliable man or wild love. Their grandmother, Thea, is nearing the end of her life and her daughter and the sisters’ mother are fearful to take the place of the oldest woman in the family. The old house, overgrown with weeds, shrubs, and sprawling trees, seems to be frozen in time, lost in oblivion. Yet the sisters bring it back to life: new people come, new cats wander in, pumpkins are grown, and the porch is renovated. The house changes, along with the lives of the women who inhabit it as the summer nears its end. In her debut novel, Eugenia Kuznetsova told a deeply intimate story about the relations between sisters, mothers, and daughters. Vivid dialogues, when the most sensitive things remain unspoken, but somehow felt, define the atmosphere of the story, and highlight the unique ties existing between the generations of women in the family.

        Distant sisters

Australasian women and the international struggle for the vote, 1880–1914

        by James Keating

In the 1890s Australian and New Zealand women became the first in the world to win the vote. Buoyed by their victories, they promised to lead a global struggle for the expansion of women's electoral rights. Charting the common trajectory of the colonial suffrage campaigns, Distant Sisters uncovers the personal and material networks that transformed feminist organising. Considering intimate and institutional connections, well-connected elites and ordinary women, this book argues developments in Auckland, Sydney, and Adelaide-long considered the peripheries of the feminist world-cannot be separated from its glamourous metropoles. Focusing on Antipodean women, simultaneously insiders and outsiders in the emerging international women's movement, and documenting the failures of their expansive vision alongside its successes, this book reveals a more contingent history of international organising and challenges celebratory accounts of fin-de-siècle global connection.

        Let's Hold Hands, Sister

by Oksana Lushchevska (Author), Anna Surgan (Illustrator)

Ten-year-old sisters Vita and Zlata share their dreams with each other: they would like to go to the forest, swim in the river, lie in the grass, and look at the clouds. They also want to learn some spells so that peace reigns on Earth, but magic exists only in fairy tales... This kind and gentle story tells that there is something more powerful in life than spells: being close to your loved ones and holding hands with them. And imagine being  friends with a funny poodle like Buka, that shows to everyone how to laugh and love! This book is a bright and honest reflection of children's confusion during one of life's harshest experiences: war. This warm play was written in the form of a dialogue to be recited. Thus the text can be read or acted out with children at home, in classes, in school theaters or theater groups. Readers can even stage a play online for relatives and friends who are not nearby!   From 9 to 12 years, 590 words Rightsholders: Nargis Gafurova and Anna Tiurina, crocus.publishers@gmail.com

Food Myths and the Rapid Change of Food Culture

        by Manfred Kriener

This book is not a manual but provides an information kit so we can find our way intelligently and make decisions. Nutrition is a constant talking point, but often there is a lack of knowledge and judgement. Amidst this confusion of facts, Manfred Kriener clarifies the rapid change of our food culture. He covers the entire range from the vegan trend to insect food, from aquaculture to cultured meat. Kriener also focuses on the various obscure quality seals, chaotic labelling on the wine rack and our inconsistency as consumers. The new world of food in eleven chapters, spicy at times, but plenty of food for thought and to whet the appetite.
