        Ganoderma Diseases of Tropical Crops

by Carmel A Pilotti, Paul Dennis Bridge

The fungal genus Ganoderma includes around 80 currently recognized species that are widely distributed in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions, and cause disease in a range of economically important perennial crops and tree-like plants. Ganoderma root and lower stem rots have a significant impact on yields from crops including oil palm, coconut, beverage crops, Acacia and rubber. The identification of species responsible for stem and butt rots is often ambiguous as closely related species may only be distinguished by subtle morphological differences. Within species there can be considerable morphological plasticity and this can make morphology-based identification difficult, particularly for species described from a single specimen. Molecular techniques are helping to slowly resolve Ganoderma taxonomy but it will be some time (if ever) before the taxonomy is fully resolved. This book brings together information on Ganoderma species that are reported to be responsible for crop diseases in tropical and sub-tropical agriculture and covers taxonomy, biology, genetics, aetiology, epidemiology and control. This book is an essential resource for researchers in Ganoderma in crop science and tropical agriculture, as well as practitioners and industry.

Journey in Trumplandia: The Rise of Populism in America

        by Tiberiu Dianu

The book is a collection of essays about the transformation of America, which has turned from a united nation to one more divided than ever. Some pundits predict that, if things don’t change, another civil war could occur. Have we reached a point of no return? Hopefully, America is mature enough to learn from its mistakes and avoid further scars along its evolving history. "Trumplandia is a welcome addition toward understanding current events, Washington’s international policy, and the present American society; a society polarized and divided as it has not been since the Civil War.” NICHOLAS DIMA, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor and Research Associate, Nelson Institute, James Madison University, Virginia. "The book is fascinating. It provides background to, and insights into [the] current and past political history as well as offering a personal view... of the country and society. Presented in thematic form in chapters and sections, the insights offered provide a suggestive radiography...” Dr. DENNIS DELETANT, OBE, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington DC. "There has been this backsliding in... what a truly functioning rule-of-law state is, that has proper separation of co-equal powers, which, if you don’t keep working on that, you backslide. And I am even worried about that here, in the United States right now, about backsliding.” OBIE MOORE, Esq., OLM Advisors LLC, Washington DC “Indeed, Trumplandia should be a welcome addition to any scholar, student or layman’s library, especially in its international edition. If anyone loses sleep over its challenging assertions, then it will have been well worth it.” ERNESTO MORALES HIZON, Ph.D. Candidate in American and Comparative Politics at Claremont Graduate University, Member, Integrated Bar of the Philippines ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TIBERIU DIANU has practiced law in Romania (as a corporate lawyer, judge, senior counselor at the Ministry of Justice, university professor and senior legal researcher), and in the United States (as a legal expert for the judiciary). He published several books and a host of articles in law, politics, and post-communist societies. Tiberiu currently lives and works in Washington, DC.

        Pollution, Revised Edition

        Treating Environmental Toxins

        by Anne Maczulak, Ph.D.

One of the most troubling aspects of pollution in this age is its pervasiveness—there are few places left where a person or an animal can live without being exposed to pollution. Toxic substances travel great distances through the air, and many of these substances eventually fall from the atmosphere onto growing crops and open waters. Meat and milk-producing animals ingest pollutants, produce growers spray large amounts of toxic pesticides onto food intended for people's dinner tables, and both animals and humans ingest small amounts of unhealthy compounds in water. Scientists now detect an array of toxic compounds—or compounds that harm the body—in the blood and tissue of almost every person from whom they collect a sample. Pollution, Revised Edition provides up-to-date research in the field of environmental medicine. Focusing on specific toxin categories as well as the health effects of various types of pollution, this full-color guide will come in handy for middle and high school students concerned with issues that affect our environment. Chapters include: The Emergence of Environmental Medicine Epidemiology of Environmental Diseases Environmental Toxins  Hazards in the Air Food and Water Hazards Populations at Risk Veterinary Environmental Medicine.

        Mumps

        by Alan Hecht, D.C.

Once a common childhood illness, mumps, also known as epidemic parotitis, has become less frequent since the development of an effective vaccine that has greatly diminished the occurrence of the disease in the United States. Even with the mumps vaccination program, however, outbreaks of mumps continue to occur throughout the United States. Many nations do not have an effective mumps vaccination program, and infants, children, and young adults in these locations are at risk for developing not only viral meningitis from the mumps virus but other complications following infection, including inflammation of the testes and ovaries, pancreatitis, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), and deafness. Mumps covers the history of the disease, its current treatment, its prevention, and the forecasts for controlling mumps worldwide. Chapters and topics include: An Overview of Mumps The History of Mumps The Mumps Virus Epidemiology of Mumps Mumps Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Complications Treatment and Prevention of Mumps The Future of Mumps.
