        A Vision of Battlements is the first novel by the writer and composer Anthony Burgess, who was born in Manchester in 1917. Set in Gibraltar during the Second World War, the book follows the fortunes of Richard Ennis, an army sergeant and incipient composer who dreams of composing great music and building a new cultural world after the end of the war. Following the example of his literary hero, James Joyce, Burgess takes the structure of his book from Virgil's Aeneid. The result is, like Joyce's Ulysses, a comic rewriting of a classical epic, whose critique of the Army and the postwar settlement is sharp and assured. The Irwell Edition is the first publication of Burgess's forgotten masterpiece since 1965. This new edition includes an introduction and notes by Andrew Biswell, author of a prize-winning biography of Anthony Burgess.

It was first published in the West in 1979 in five languages (Russian, French, English, Italian and Ukrainian) and it belongs to the "treasury" of anti-totalitarian resistance literature. Analyzing his life path from his postwar childhood to the Dnipropetrovsk psychiatric prison, where he was thrown with the beginning of repressions in 1972, Leonid Pliushch creates an invaluable panoramic portrait of the generation of "sixties", which was given a chance to free their mind from authoritarianism. The text is presented in the author's edition of 2002 with appendices and foreword by Oksana Zabuzhko.

        How Britain’s middle classes found their style

        In postwar Britain, journalists and politicians prophesised that the class system would not survive a consumer culture where everyone had TVs and washing machines, and where more and more people owned their own homes. They were to be proved entirely wrong. In good taste charts how class culture, rather than being destroyed by mass consumption, was remade from flat-pack furniture, Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle magazines. Novelists, cartoonists and playwrights satirised the tastes of the emerging middle classes, and sociologists claimed that an entire population was suffering from status anxiety, but underneath it all, a world was being constructed out of duvets, quiches and mayonnaise, easy chairs from Habitat, white emulsion paint and ubiquitous well-scrubbed, second-hand pine kitchen tables. This was less a world of symbolic goods and more an intimate environment alive with new feelings and attitudes.

        Psychoanalysis and the family in twentieth-century France

        In the last quarter of the twentieth century, if French people had a parenting problem or dilemma there was one person they consulted above all: Françoise Dolto (1908-88). But who was Dolto? How did she achieve a position of such influence? What ideas did she communicate to the French public? This book connects the story of Dolto's rise to two broader histories: the dramatic growth of psychoanalysis in postwar France and the long-running debate over the family and the proper role of women in society. It shows that Dolto's continued reputation in France as a liberal and enlightened educational thinker is at best only partially deserved and that conservative and anti-feminist ideas often underpinned her prominent public interventions. While Dolto retains the status of a national treasure, her career has had far-reaching and sometimes harmful repercussions for French society, particularly in the treatment of autism.

Northern Ireland was the only part of the UK with a devolved government and no military conscription during the war. The absence of military conscription made the process of mobilisation, and the experience of men and women, very different from that in Britain. The book's conclusion considers how the government faced the domestic and international challenges of the postwar world. This study draws on a wide range of primary sources and will appeal to those interested in modern Irish and British history and in the Second World War.

        During the first quarter of the twentieth century, the intersection of support for Irish freedom and the principles of Catholic social justice transformed Irish ethnicity in Boston. Prior to World War I, Boston’s middle-class Irish nationalist leaders sought a rapprochement with local Yankees. However, the combined impact of the Easter 1916 Rising and the postwar campaign to free Ireland from British rule drove a wedge between leaders of the city’s two main groups. Irish-American nationalists, emboldened by the visits of Irish leader Eamon de Valera, rejected both Yankees’ support of a postwar Anglo-American alliance and the latter groups’ portrayal of Irish nationalism as a form of Bolshevism. Instead, ably assisted by Catholic Church leaders such as Cardinal William O’Connell, Boston’s Irish nationalists portrayed an independent Ireland as the greatest bulwark against the spread of socialism. As the movement’s popularity spread locally, it attracted the support not only of Irish immigrants, but also that of native-born Americans of Irish descent, including businessman, left-leaning progressives, and veterans of the women’s suffrage movement. For a brief period after World War I, Irish-American nationalism in Boston became a vehicle for the promotion of wider democratic reform. Though the movement was unable to survive the disagreements surrounding the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, it had been a source of ethnic unity that enabled Boston’s Irish community to negotiate the challenges of the postwar years including the anti-socialist Red Scare and the divisions caused by the Boston Police Strike in the fall of 1919. Furthermore, Boston’s Irish nationalists drew heavily on Catholic Church teachings such that Irish ethnicity came to be more clearly identified with the advocacy of both cultural pluralism and the rights of immigrant and working families in Boston and America.

The cinema becomes a counter-image to the harsh reality through which Ida and her little rascals fight their way as "escapees", with ingenuity, the power of dreams and the love that unites them. By becoming their narrator out of longing for the grandmother she did not have, Linda changes herself - and on top of that she tells the story of an entire era.

        Postcoloniality and Memories of Japan

        Twenty-First-Century Taiwanese Fiction

        Revisiting Taiwan’s Japanese Period (1895-1945) has become a major feature of twenty-first-century Taiwanese fiction and film. Many contemporary Taiwanese novelists and filmmakers find it important to understand what the Taiwanese (including the aboriginals) thought and believed as well as the structure of feelings they harbored during that period, a period that was denigrated and largely obliterated in official history during postwar Kuomintang’s martial rule. Perhaps just as importantly, these contemporary authors and filmmakers are concerned with how the Taiwanese (including the aboriginals) living through these two periods re-membered the Japanese Period. By contextualizing novels by Shih Shu-ching, Li Ang, Wu Ming-yi, Kuo Chiang-Sheng, and Gan Yao-ming as well as Wei Te-sheng’s feature film Seediq Bale, in tandem with careful readings of these texts, this book argues that these texts can be seen as engaged in a large project of re-memory from a postcolonial perspective. Revisiting Taiwan’s Japanese Period in these texts not only explores pro-Japanese, anti-Japanese sentiments, and ambivalence toward Japan, but highlights an evaluation of Japanese and Kuomintang rule. Reconnecting prewar and postwar Taiwan eventually points to Taiwan’s postcoloniality by suggesting Taiwan is a young nation with its long colonial history, with its people both fighting colonialisms and influenced by colonial legacies.
